2013 SRT Viper to Start Below $100,000: Look Out, Corvette ZR1!

SRT Viper

?

When it finally comes to market, the 2013 SRT Viper will boast some seriously larger-than-life performance credentials: A thundering 8.4 liter V10, 640 wailing horsepower, and 600 thumping pound-feet of torque. Its price, on the other hand, will start just below that magical $100,000 mark with an MSRP of $99,390,?sans a $1,995 destination fee. You'll have to opt for the techier GTS model to significantly boost the figure; that bad boy will start at $120,395.

?

While that strategic pricing may have been implemented to avoid the psychologically distressing six-figure mark, it was more likely engineered to undercut Chevrolet's Corvette ZR1,?the big-bore domestic rival?which starts at $111,600 excluding a $975 destination charge.

?

Apart from the surprisingly distant starting MSRPs, both cars represent dramatically different ways to skin the ultra high performance cat: while the SRT claims the most engine twist of any naturally aspirated mill coupled with dramatic overall weight loss, the Blue Devil flaunts the momentum of its decades-old brand along with a casual "King of the Hill" insouciance.

?

Either way, these monsters are fire-breathing, snorting proof that the days of large displacement, stupid high horsepower muscle cars are far from over.
