Graph Search - Social Media Today

Facebook took another step toward becoming its own web universe when it launched a search engine for shared content. This move challenges the future relevance of search engines like Google, as well as review sites such as Yelp and Foursquare.

The aim of ?graph search? is to assist the Facebook community in finding information more easily about what other Facebook users have shared on the network. It uses the indexed information generated within the Facebook universe to generate search information. It will allow people to find others by their interests, location or career. So if you like water skiing you can find other people that live nearby that also like water skiing, which will in turn allow you to make new connections with other people who share similar interests with you. Alternatively you can search for people nearby who like Chinese food and see what restaurants they have ?liked,? and read their comments.

Image

This graph search engine is designed to give Facebook users the ability to sort information by topics and interests with the added advantage of keeping its users within the Facebook community instead of sending them to search engines or review sites for the information they seek. "Graph Search is designed to take a precise query and return to you the answer, not link to other places where you might get the answer," Mark Zuckerberg explained, highlighting some of the issues of a typical Web search.

Graph Search (beta) version rolls out Tuesday on a limited basis to users. This version will be able to handle queries based on people, photos, places and interests.

It is anticipated that results will be displayed based on importance, so a restaurant with more likes could possibly show up toward the top of the list that is generated by the search. Check-ins could also have an impact on where a place is positioned on the list, emphasizing the importance and need for businesses to be actively involved on Facebook and ensuring that their Page is relevant, engaging and up-to-date.

Facebook also partners with Microsoft's Bing social search engine to fill in some of the gaps where Graph Search cannot supply the information. Facebook does stress that Graph Search is not a web search, but this can be seen as the first step in that direction, because when the product is fully operational it will give many Facebook users an incentive to stay within the Facebook community instead of spending time on other social media and search sites.

Inventor Of The World Wide Web Calls For More Online Innovation ...

Tim Berners-Lee, the inventor of the World Wide Web, isn?t entirely happy with what he has created ? and has thrown down the gauntlet to web developers to come up with more disruptive forms of online communication that can break down cultural not just geographical barriers.

Talking about the web as it is today, rather than the ?collaborative tool? he originally designed, he said:??World peace has not miraculously occurred. People still mainly talk to their neighbours, people still mainly talk to the people who have the same religion, and the same culture, so for all its breaking down geographical boundaries in principle it hasn?t really broken down cultural boundaries.?Can we develop systems on the web which will actually help solve that sort of ?challenge??

Berners-Lee was speaking in an interview at the World Economic Forum today,?entitled ?what?s wrong with social networking?? but he joked the title had been cooked up merely to draw in the crowds.

?As a universal platform the web wasn?t supposed to dictate what you did with it,? he told his audience in Davos. ?The world wide web is a platform and humanity does what it can with it??There?s lots of people who think we could do more. What do we really want to get out of this web thing? What do we really want to get out of human communication??

While it began as a collaborative tool, the web subsequently took off as a publishing medium ? or it did to a ?certain extent?, said Berners-Lee, pointing to the fact that publishing online remains a relatively elite activity and therefore, again, does not live up to his original collaborative vision for a truly global web.

?We?ve got wikis, we?ve got blogs, but still most people? aren?t publishing on the web. And actually when you go to most places you?re not in a position where you can take place in the conversation very much. Sometimes you can comment but actually the comment tends to be at a second level,? he said.

Asked about the erosion of online openness threatened by walled garden social networks, Berners-Lee said the networks both help humanity by providing the data that enables computers to help people but also highlighted how there is ?a lot of frustration, from a lot of people? that they can?t connect up the personal data they have entered into different services in all the ways they might like to.

?Each of these social network systems is a silo so there is a frustration that I?ve told it all my data but I don?t have access to that,? he said.

Despite yearning for more openness and fewer shackles stifling the free flow of online data, Berners-Lee was careful to say he was not calling for an online data free-for-all. There do need to be ?reasonable boundaries?, he accepted ? whether it?s sensitive personal or government or military data. ?The web isn?t about just sharing everything, destroying privacy? [but] if I want to share something with you it shouldn?t be the technology that gets in the way.?

Turning to the economic argument, Berners-Lee conceded there is a problem with current online business models ? especially when it comes to finding ways to pay musicians. The web should be ?about spreading culture, music and getting payment back to musicians?, he said. ? We?ve got to find new ways of doing that.?

Specifically he called for new protocols to be developed to support online payments. ?We need to find a whole lot of new business models ? I think we should develop new payment protocols so that when you?re using a web browser it?s a lot easier to pay for things.?

He also argued for the economic value in opening up data that is unnecessarily locked away, pointing to a U.K. initiative to open up government data so that the citizens who have paid for the data to be created in the first place can have the benefit of using it ? and use it to create new businesses. ?You?re making a great common good, that?s making the world run more efficiently,? he argued.

Likewise, he argued that the benefit to humanity of opening up scientific data ? to ?scientists everywhere? ? would be ?huge?.??It?s a?question of unlocking this potential that we really already have ? it?s getting huge benefit for very little cost,? he said.

Berners-Lee was also asked about Internet activist?Aaron Swartz, who was arrested for downloading academic journals and subsequently committed suicide ? and argued that Swartz?s tragedy is an example of what can happen when ?legislation gets too strong?.

?He was an incredibly ethical person. He thought a huge amount about what was right and how the world should be? but because [the FBI] saw that what he was doing was accessing a computer system there seems to be a deep suspicion of that,? he said.

?He used his programming to try to make a point, in a way as a protest. But they ended up using a very unfair law which had been changed from its original form which said that if you break into a computer system in any way then you are guilty of a felony? ?People are thinking now about that law, and there already proposals to change it.?

?To be a hacker ? when I use the term ? is somebody who is creative and does wonderful things,? Berners-Lee added. ?We need more coders, we need more people who understand how to put data online.?

A graduate of Oxford University, England, in 1989, Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web, an internet-based hypermedia initiative for global information sharing while at CERN, the European Particle Physics Laboratory. He wrote the first web client and server in 1990. His specifications of URIs, HTTP and HTML were refined as Web technology spread. He is the 3COM Founders Professor of Engineering in the School of Engineering with a joint appointment in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science...

Nintendo's Wii U Miiverse getting user communities, mobile access

Nintendo's Wii U-based Miiverse social network is also getting a big update later this year, including user-created communities, more than one community per title, updated usability, and a more advanced filtering system. That's in addition to a mobile phone-based application, all arriving in 2013 -- you'll be able to access the Miiverse via mobile phone a bit earlier. "Initially the experience will be browser-based, but Nintendo plans to create a dedicated Miiverse app in the future," the official PR reads.

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata announced the updates during a Nintendo Direct video presentation this morning, though he didn't give a concrete date for the Miiverse updates or the mobile app ("spring" was the closest he got, and that's only applicable to mobile access, not the app). He did say that you'll sign into the mobile app using your Nintendo Network ID, and be able to access (and interact) with the Miiverse on-the-go.

Nintendo Outlines Its Vision for Wii U, Including Launching Virtual Console and How Miiverse and Second-Screen Gaming Features Will Continue to Evolve

NOTE: Multimedia available here

REDMOND, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Nintendo President Satoru Iwata unleashed Wii U news in an installment of Nintendo Direct today as he outlined Nintendo's future plans for the console. Iwata revealed how the Wii U launch lineup will be bolstered by a long list of top game franchises headed for the new console. These are games that longtime players and newcomers alike will love to play, and everyone will be experiencing them in new ways, thanks to the integrated second-screen experiences enabled by the Wii U GamePad controller. Iwata also detailed a number of enhancements designed to make the Wii U game experience more social, even if people are not playing in the same room.

"The fun of video games is not only just playing games, but also sharing experiences together with people - even though they live far away, their skill levels are different or their experience does not happen at the same time," Iwata said. "We want Wii U to be the system that brings everyone together."

To view the Nintendo Direct in its entirety, visit http://www.nintendo.com/nintendo-direct. The many announcements included:

Game News

Two Zelda Games: Eiji Aonuma, the producer of The Legend of Zelda series, revealed two entries in the series for Wii U.
Super Mario is on His Way: The Nintendo EAD Tokyo Software Development team that created the Super Mario Galaxy games for Wii and Super Mario 3D Land for Nintendo 3DS is working on a new 3D Mario action game for Wii U. The game is scheduled to be playable at this year's E3.
Buckle Up!: Nintendo is also working on a new installment of the hit Mario Kart franchise. This game is also planned to be playable at E3.
Yarn Yoshi: The team that created Kirby's Epic Yarn is hard at work on the first console game to feature Yoshi as the main character since 1998's Yoshi's Story for Nintendo 64. Takashi Tezuka, director of Yoshi's Island and Yoshi's Story, is supervising the development of the new game, which is set in a fanciful world of yarn and textiles.
Wii Fit U Communities: New features coming to Wii Fit U include letting players create user communities on Miiverse from within the game. Community members can discuss exercises, BMI or weight changes and other health topics with other players as a way to encourage one another to reach their fitness goals. Similar functionality for other games is also planned.
Pikmin 3 Photos: The upcoming Pikmin 3 game includes a feature that lets players use the Wii U GamePad as a camera to share the same perspective as Pikmin and take close-up pictures of landscapes and creatures in the game and share them in Miiverse.
The Party Continues: A new installment in the Wii Party franchise is planned to launch this summer. The game features various play styles, including one that lets both players compete head-to-head using just the GamePad.
RPG Mashup: Nintendo has begun many collaborations with outside development partners to bring the best franchises and experiences to Wii U. In one such partnership, Nintendo and Atlus are working on a collaboration that features the Fire Emblem and Shin Megami Tensei franchises. A video trailer for the game was shown in the Nintendo Direct.
A New Game from Monolith Soft: Tetsuya Takahashi and the team at Monolith Soft that worked on Xenoblade for Wii are working on a new game. A video trailer for the game was shown in the Nintendo Direct.
More on the Way: Iwata shared a new trailer for The Wonderful 101. That game and GAME & WARIO are scheduled to launch in the first half of 2013. Iwata also showed a new video for Bayonetta 2. That game and the new Super Smash Bros. installment are still on the way, but will need more development time before details can be revealed.
Virtual Console

Virtual Console for Wii U: A spring system update will add Virtual Console software to the Nintendo eShop for Wii U. The service will launch right after the spring update and will include a selection of NES and Super NES games, with Game Boy Advance games to be added in the future. The prices for NES and Super NES Virtual Console games for Wii U will be the same as they were for the Virtual Console on Wii. People who have already purchased the Wii version of a certain NES or Super NES Virtual Console game and transferred it to their Wii U console can buy the enhanced Wii U version of the same game for the reduced price of $1 for NES games and $1.50 for Super NES games.
Classic Games for 30 Cents! To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the release of the Famicom in Japan (which was known as the NES in the United States), Nintendo is making one NES or Super NES game available each month now through July at the anniversary price of just 30 cents. Each game will be available at that price for 30 days, and the first is the NES game Balloon Fight, which is now available in the Nintendo eShop for Wii U.
Social and System Enhancements

Miiverse Expands to Smartphones: Starting this spring, people will be able to browse Miiverse from their smartphones. Initially the experience will be browser-based, but Nintendo plans to create a dedicated Miiverse app in the future.
System Updates: Two major updates are on the way, one in the spring and one in the summer. The updates will introduce a wide range of functionality, such as Virtual Console capabilities and shortening the time it takes users to launch software or return to the menu screen.
Remember that Wii U features parental controls that let adults manage the content their children can access. For more information about this and other features, visit http://www.nintendo.com/wiiu. Standalone versions of the trailers for The Wonderful 101, Bayonetta 2, the new game from Monolith Soft and the collaboration featuring the Fire Emblem and Shin Megami Tensei franchises can be found at http://www.youtube.com/nintendo.

Zombieland TV show in the works at Amazon, headed for Instant

Before Jesse Eisenberg was known for playing Facebook's quirky founder, he starred with Woody Harrelson in a delightfully campy film called Zombieland. That film is apparently being adapted for the little screen -- well, perhaps not so little, but littler -- by none other than Amazon Studios, the in-house team created to produce original content on Amazon's Instant streaming service, reports Broadcast Now. It's not clear just how far along the series is, but io9 did discover some casting pages which reveal the plot: "the show will center around the original group of post apocalyptic survivors." Presumably that means more Twinkie references, more awkward romance, and a ton more comical zombie killing. That is, of course, if the early casting sheets are indicative of what the final show ends up being. Regardless, we've reached out to Amazon for more info, and we've dropped some of the film's best parts just below the break.

FitStar Reinvents The Home Workout With Upcoming iPad App From NFL Tight End Tony Gonzalez

20120720_fitstar_0245FitStar, a fitness app startup backed by Floodgate and Google Ventures that uses the iPad to transform home video workouts, just announced its first creation. In it, Atlanta Falcons tight end Tony Gonzalez becomes a user’s personal trainer, leading them through about 60 different video exercises. The idea is that the iPad is much better suited toward helping people achieve their fitness goals. Unlike DVDs and videos, which are passive, the iPad can respond to a person’s changes in their workout habits. It can send reminders or offer custom combinations of exercises to meet their goals. Arriving this spring, the new FitStar app tracks a person’s progress through about 60 exercises in a regime that Gonzalez helped design. If they get lazy and slack off for three weeks, the app will start a person at a slightly easier level than where they left off. “I want people to feel like I’m really there with them and going through the workout with them,” Gonzalez said in an interview. “I’ll put in one liners and I try to keep it light and fun. I’ll say things like, ‘Hey, I haven’t seen you in awhile, but that’s OK. We’re going to go through this together.’” It also collects information about their age, weight and personal goals — whether those involve just staying in shape or training for a triathlon. The exercises don’t require any fancy equipment and can be done at home. It’s mostly your body weight that’s necessary. Gonzalez said he spent about two days filming all of the different exercises for the workout. “I was exhausted,” he said. “This workout — it can be for a beginner, or it can be for an expert.” The app also includes basic social features that let users share achievements with friends, so they stay engaged and maybe a bit competitive with workout buddies. It’s the first app built on FitStar’s platform, and the company will offer products down the line that appeal to different demographics and have other routines. FitStar is pursuing the freemium model that has been proven to work really successfully among mobile app developers. The Tony Gonzalez app is free, but the company will charge for premium content down the line. They add that this should be a fraction of the cost of most fitness DVDs without specifying further pricing details. FitStar was founded by former AOL and Digg executive Mike

The Optimizer

Jeff Dean of Google. Google's Jeff Dean

Courtesy Google.

?The speed of light in a vacuum used to be about 35 mph. Then Jeff Dean spent a weekend optimizing physics.??Jeff Dean Facts

Jeff Dean facts aren?t, well, true. But the fact that someone went to the trouble to make up Chuck Norris-esque exploits about Dean is remarkable. That?s because Jeff Dean is a software engineer, and software engineers are not like Chuck Norris. For one thing, they?re not lone rangers?software development is an inherently collaborative enterprise. For another, they rarely shoot cowboys with an Uzi.

Nevertheless, on April Fool?s Day 2007, some admiring young Google engineers saw fit to bestow upon Jeff Dean the honor of a website extolling his programming achievements. For instance:

  • Compilers don?t warn Jeff Dean. Jeff Dean warns compilers.
  • Jeff Dean writes directly in binary. He then writes the source code as documentation for other developers.
  • When Jeff Dean has an ergonomic evaluation, it is for the protection of his keyboard.
  • Jeff Dean was forced to invent asynchronous APIs one day when he optimized a function so that it returned before it was invoked.

Here?s a true Jeff Dean fact: You have to be a computer whiz to understand most of the jokes that people tell about Jeff Dean. (For those interested, Business Insider offers helpful explanations of some of the more popular ones.) But if his fake accomplishments are hard to understand without a real computer-science background, his real accomplishments are even more abstruse. The programs that Dean was instrumental in building?MapReduce, BigTable, Spanner?are not the ones most Google users associate with the company. But they?re the kind that made Google?and, consequently, much of the modern Web as we know it?possible. And the projects he?s working on now have the potential to revolutionize information technology once again.

When you think of the people who built today?s Web, you probably conjure founders and CEOs: Tim Berners-Lee, Marc Andreessen, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, maybe Mark Zuckerberg. That makes sense: Each of those people invented a product or framework that shaped how we use the Internet.

Meanwhile, in the shadows of these giants?all of whom have graduated from day-to-day gruntwork?are legions of faceless developers who tap away at keyboards every day to build the products and systems we all use. In the tech world, more so than in most other industries, those employees are far from interchangeable. A great accountant might save you 5 percent on your taxes. A great baseball player will reach base just a bit more often than a mediocre baseball player. But a great software developer can do in a week what might take months for a team of 10 lesser developers?the difference is exponential rather than marginal. That?s not a Jeff Dean fact; it?s conventional wisdom in Silicon Valley, which is why the best companies go to such great lengths to attract top talent.

Dean arrived at Google in mid-1999 having already earned a reputation as one of the country?s top young computer scientists. Growing up when home computing power was just blossoming, Dean says he was always looking for ways to push the limits of what you could do on a given machine. As a high schooler, he wrote software for analyzing vast sets of epidemiological data that he says was ?26 times faster? than what professionals were using at the time. The system, called Epi Info, has been adopted by the Centers for Disease Control and translated into 13 languages. And as a Ph.D. student in computer science, he worked on compilers, programs that translate source code into a language that a computer can readily execute. ?I?ve always liked code that runs fast,? he explains matter-of-factly.

But Dean has always been restless in his interests, and he didn?t want to work on compilers his whole life. So he left academia and landed less than three years later at Google, which had only about 20 employees at the time. (According to Steven Levy?s book In the Plex, the search startup saw Dean as something like a prized draft pick.) After contributing some important early work to Google News and AdSense, the advertising product that would rewrite the rules of the Internet economy, he turned his attention to one of the company?s core problems: scale.

Google?s founding ideas came from Page and Brin, world-class developers in their own right. In the late 1990s they built PageRank, an algorithm for returning the most relevant results to a given search query. The focus on relevance put Google on a course to surpass Yahoo, AltaVista, and the day?s other leading search engines. But as the upstart grew in popularity, it faced a tremendous computing challenge. ?We couldn?t deploy machines fast enough? to keep up with demand, Dean recalls.

So Dean, working with fellow standout programmer Sanjay Ghemawat and others, did what he had done in high school with Epi Info: found software solutions to what seemed like hardware problems. Ghemawat helped lead a team that built the Google File System, which allowed for huge files to be efficiently distributed across thousands of cheap servers. Then Dean and Ghemawat developed a programming tool called MapReduce that allowed developers to efficiently process gargantuan data sets with those machines working in parallel. Much as a compiler allows a programmer to write code without worrying about the nitty-gritty of how the CPU will process it, MapReduce allowed Google?s developers to tweak the search algorithm or add new computations without having to worry about how to parallelize the operation or handle equipment failures.?

Auto Insurance coverage for a 16 Year Old ? Bnr.Co

If your 16 year old desires to drive, he or she will have to have insurance coverage on a car just before they can drive, or be on your insurance. Bear in mind that auto insurance for a 16 year old is going to be expensive. The factors why are understandable. For the most component, teenagers are the ones that have the most accidents on the road. If you put them on your insurance coverage it will go up simply because the 16 year old has little encounter on the road. Most teenagers are seen as higher threat simply because of their inexperience.

Vehicle insurance coverage for a 16 year old will include at least the minimal liability that is needed by the state. Nevertheless, you want to be certain that your policy will cover everything and be adequate to cover the driver and car. The prices will also vary by the year of the automobile as effectively as the make and model. Sports vehicles will be a lot greater than typical cars. Also if your child is not female, the insurance coverage will be greater because of the risky attitudes that males get themselves into. Unfortunately scientific studies that have been carried out bear this attitude correct out.

When you are obtaining auto insurance for a 16 year old, you will want to have their gender, birthday and name as effectively as the vehicle info. You will also have to have your residence address and know what coverage that you are looking for. You will also want to supply what the car will be driven for and how several miles it will be driven per year. While this may appear like a lot of info to provide an insurance organization, it is very essential to the business so that you can get your teenager insured. It is not a complicated process to go by means of.

Automobile insurance for 16 year old, no matter how you cut it is costly. There are numerous various reasons why that is and most of this has to do with the risk category. There are no straightforward answers when it comes to insurance in this specific group. One of the issues that can decrease the expense would be to have your 16 year old take a defensive driving program and pass it. If your teenager can successfully pass a course like this, the premiums will go down a bit. This can imply the difference among driving legally and getting too costly to drive till they are older.

This is why if you are searching for auto insurance for a 16 year old, you need to realize the various demographics when it comes to insurance policies for them. If you can reduce the risk such as taking a defensive driving course, then the insurance coverage will be lower. Nevertheless, in some cases they may not be capable to be insured. This would come into play if they are driving a sports automobile such as a Mustang. The costs will be reduce for a normal car or truck than they would for sports vehicles.

Caring for a Dying Parent

mom and dad

By Contributing Writer, Marci Ferrell

As I was?pondering?where to begin in sharing about our time this past year in caring for my husband?s sweet Mama in her final days, I realized my first post at Visionary Womanhood was?Biblically?Caring for Our Aging Parents. ?We had just brought Mom home and were adjusting to caring for her medical needs round the clock. ?We knew it was not going to be an easy road, and that our days would be more difficult as time went on since Mom?s condition was deteriorating day by day.

I?ve appreciated the time in preparing for this post to ponder the lessons we learned through this process and how death as a believer is a divine appointment. (Ecclesiastes 3:1-2, Hebrews 9:27)

Preparing to Die

Mom suffered several major strokes that left her unresponsive and bedridden. ?We didn?t know if she could hear or see us. ?In time her body began to slow down, and we realized that death was near. ?It had been over a year since she suffered the first stroke, and we as a family had come to a peace knowing that she was going to be going home soon. ?There was so much comfort knowing Mom was a believer. ?We knew she was going home to be with Jesus. ?

Our hospice nurses and aides were a blessing during this time. ?There were so many times the Lord allowed us to share the gospel and minister to the needs of these nurses and aides who ironically can offer us no everlasting hope because they are lost themselves. ?This time was especially difficult for Dad, but his eyes would light up, and you would see the joy of the Lord when he was able to share about the work of Christ in his and mom?s lives to these nurses who had truly become part of our family during this time.

It is amazing what happens in our lives as believers when the focus is taken off ourselves and our troubles and all we see is Christ. ?

As the Time Drew Near

I have never watched someone I loved so dearly ? die. ?This was one of the most difficult times of my life, and as a family, we hurt so much for my husband?s dad. ?The woman he had been married to for 50 years was leaving this earthly body. ?She had left us over a year ago in being able to respond and communicate with us, but we still had her there physically to touch, care for, love on and talk to and pray over. ?Dad had purpose in taking care of her needs, and I don?t think we realized the impact that had on keeping his mind busy until she was gone.

My husband was an only child and had such a close relationship with his mom. ?He had taken on the role of being strong for his dad and our family. ?There was much put upon Doug, but I watched his?reliance?on the Lord during this time and how he directed each one of us during?trying?times to God?s Word for strength and hope. ?I have so much love and respect and?thankfulness?for the gift of my husband. ?Our marriage was?strengthened?during this time.

As the time drew closer, we were provided with nurses around the clock. ?They were there to help us keep mom comfortable and to administer medication to aid her in breathing.? On the evening of her death, the nurse that was with us let us know it was getting close. ?We were able to gather as a family around mom and sing to her, pray over her, and just share with her all the things we loved so much about her.

In the difficulty of the moment there was still a celebration of remembering the life of faith mom lived out. ?God was glorified in her death as we thanked and praised Him for the gift she was to us and for Him saving her as His daughter. ?

?The best moment of a Christian?s life is his last one, because it is the one that is nearest heaven. And then it is that he begins to strike the keynote of the song which he shall sing to all eternity.?

~C. H. Spurgeon

Preparing a Funeral

God is sovereign over all of life, and He calls us to die. ?In Surprised by Suffering, R.C. Sproul shares that we are all called to various vocations in our lives as believers. ?Some are called to preach, to teach, to build buildings, make cars, and be parents. ?He reminds us that though we are all called to different vocations as?believers?- we all share in the vocation of death. ?This calling comes to each of us and it is a calling from God just as we are called to the ministry of Christ.

?We usually limit the idea of vocation to our careers or our jobs. ?The word vocation,?however, comes from the Latin word vocare,?meaning??to call.? ?Used in the Christian sense, vocation refers to a?divine?calling, a summons that comes from God Himself.

R. C. Sproul, Surprised by Suffering: The Role of Pain and Death in the?Christian?Life

We knew Mom would want the gospel boldly proclaimed at her funeral, for there would be believers and unbelievers in attendance. ? Mom may not have had the vision to view death as a vocation, but she had a heart for the lost and knew that the purpose of our lives is to glorify the Lord in all we do ? dying included. Doug, my husband, gave the message and our children shared their testimony of the impact their grandmother had in their lives. ?It was beautiful, simple, and the focus was on Christ.

Precious in the sight of the LORD?is the death of his saints. (Psalm 116:15)

amber anya graveside

Ministry of the Saints

The days, weeks, and months after a funeral are sometimes the hardest. ?Our presence in the lives of those suffering loss may be one of the most important things we can do. ?We are so thankful for the body of Christ to give a listening heart and truly just be there for our family during this time. ?Hugs, cards, phone calls and meals provided were such a blessing. ?One of the most important things we can do for those who are grieving is to point them to the faithfulness of God.

If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together. (1 Corinthians 12:26)

Comforting those who Grieve

Dealing with the grief dad was experiencing was new territory for us. ?We have learned the best thing we can do is just be there.? My husband lost his mom, and this has been a difficult transition for him. ?We have had our share of mistakes, but I wanted to share some practical helps we have learned through this process that have been an encouragement through the process of grieving:

  • We are thankful dad is living with us so he is not alone but part of the family everyday.
  • My husband has been good at taking the time to have one on one time with his dad whether it is just going out to lunch or taking a ride to Cabela?s together.
  • Sharing memories of Mom?s life and just taking the time to sit and listen. For Christmas we made dad a photo album with favorite memories of Mom?s life.
  • Being especially mindful to talk about Mom during the holiday season when her presence is missed even more.
  • The pain of the loss is always there, and we sometimes just need to weep with those who weep. (Romans 12:15)

?The Hope to Come

We know that Mom would never exchange her place in Glory to be back in this fallen world, nor would we want her to. ?I miss Mama, her smile, laugh, hugs, cooking, and the way she loved and cared for each one of us. ?She was such an example in my life of a heart to serve others.

I have learned to focus on all the blessings of having her in my life. ?There are moments of tears, but in Christ we always have hope. ?God?s comfort truly gives us strength to continue on the path He has called us too. ?Our true comfort is only found in the Gospel. ?It is knowing that God is going to finish this work that He started in us, and we will all, as believers, one day share in the glory that truly outweighs the present sufferings of this world.

And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.
(Philippians 1:6)

For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us. (Romans 8:18)

Treasury: Trillion-dollar coin would not be legal

(AP) ? Forget about the government minting a $1 trillion coin to solve its debt-limit crisis.

Treasury Department spokesman Anthony Coley said Saturday that neither his department nor the Federal Reserve believes the law can or should be used to produce such a coin to avoid a coming battle with Congress over government borrowing.

Some of President Barack Obama's liberal allies have been promoting the coin strategy.

The government has reached its $16.4 trillion borrowing limit. By late February or early March, Treasury will run out of ways to cover debts and could begin defaulting on government loans.

White House spokesman Jay Carney says Congress has two options at its disposal: either pay the tab for its spending or send the nation into default, which would have serious economic consequences.

HP's Meg Whitman made $15.4 million in fiscal 2012

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Chief executive Meg Whitman received compensation worth about $15.4 million in 2012 as Hewlett-Packard Co. posted a net loss in her first full fiscal year in charge, according to a federal proxy filing.

Whitman's base salary was just $1. Her bonus was $1.7 million, while the remainder of her compensation was granted in the form of Hewlett-Packard stock options, stock awards and other income, according to the proxy filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Friday.

Her compensation was about 70 percent of previous targets, as the company posted a net loss.

Whitman - the former EBay executive and one-time Republican candidate for California governor - took over as HP's chief executive in the fall of 2011, at a time when the hardware manufacturer had been rocked by a decade of troubled deals, corporate espionage and allegations of sexual harassment in the executive suite.

Since taking over the reins, Whitman has tried various strategies to turn around the Silicon Valley titan, including plans to cut an estimated 29,000 jobs over the next two years and reverse a previous corporate decision to spin off HP's PC division.

But years of corporate tumult, and the company's shares dropping by nearly 39 percent in the past year, has had investors putting the company's board under intense scrutiny.

Whitman is ranked 285th on the Forbes list of the top 400 richest people in America, and 18th on the Forbes list of the World's 100 most powerful women.

CHANGES TO EXECUTIVE PAY

That drop in stock price, too, has cut some of HP's executive pay in the form of restricted stock awards from earlier years, according to the proxy filing. The payment of these awards were tied to the firm's per-share performance against the Standard & Poor's 500 Index over a period of time.

HP changed its compensation program last year, and is now giving stock options that vest if the company's stock price meets or exceeds specific goals or thresholds.

Also, according to the proxy filed Friday, HP said it will offer up a new policy proposal that will allow large shareholders to have the ability to nominate directors - rather than just voting for a panel of directors nominated by the company.

The measure will be voted on at the company's annual shareholder meeting held on March 20, at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, California.

Sales of personal computers fell for the first time in more than five years in the Christmas holiday season, as Microsoft Corp's Windows 8 operating system failed to excite buyers and many consumers instead opted for tablet devices and smartphones, according to a recent study by tech industry tracker IDC.

The slump capped a year of waning sales for Hewlett-Packard and rival PC makers such as Dell Inc with no immediate signs of relief.

Stolen Florida Dept. of Juvenile Justice device contained records of more than 100,000 youth and employees

The Florida Department of Juvenile Justice says it ?strives to increase public safety by reducing juvenile delinquency, strengthening families and turning around the lives of troubled youth.? ?Creating more trouble for youth and their families is obviously not part of their mission, yet that?s what may have happened. ?From a press release they issued yesterday:

The Florida Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) today reported an information security breach to FDLE, due to the possibility of identity theft.

On Jan. 2, DJJ reported the theft of a mobile device containing youth and employee records to the Tallahassee Police Department (TPD), which is currently investigating the theft. DJJ has also notified the Office of?Information Security.

The device, which was stolen from a secure DJJ office, was not encrypted or password-protected as required by DJJ?s technology policy.

?This is an unacceptable lapse that could potentially expose youth and employees to identity theft,? stated Secretary Wansley Walters. ?We are working to determine who may be affected by the breach and make sure that all other devices with confidential information are properly protected. We are partnering with TPD to track down the stolen device and have reached out to FDLE.?

DJJ confirms that more than 100,000 records may have been compromised, and the agency is currently working to determine the affected individuals. DJJ is working to notify those youth and employees who may be affected, once they are determined.

DJJ issued emails with a policy reminder and prospective security instructions to?all employees?and?contracted provider programs?requiring the immediate encryption of all mobile devices that are not already protected and contain confidential data.

For information on preventing and recovering from identity theft, please visit the?Florida Attorney General Identity Theft webpage?or the?Federal Trade Commission identity theft webpage, or call1-877-ID-THEFT (438-4338).

This may not be the department?s first ?unacceptable lapse.? In September 2012, a small item in the Orlando Sentinel reported that three computers ?containing sensitive Department of Juvenile Justice information? were stolen. ?The theft, which ?occurred at the Boca Club apartments, was reported to and by the Orlando Police, who would not reveal any other details citing the ongoing investigation. Why three computers with sensitive DJJ information were at that location was never explained, and I found no follow-up on the theft report.

Dot Earth Blog: Designing Outside the Box

When I stumbled on the grainy video clip above in my laptop this morning, I found myself reflecting on the wonderful work of Douglas Martin, a designer of ocean-going rowing shells whose forays into violin design and construction exemplify the kind of out-of-the-box thinking that I would love to see flourish in other arenas in the next few decades.

I wrote about him for Science Times in 2006 in ?String Theory: New Approaches to Instrument Design.? I?ve posted two other clips of him playing his fiddles on YouTube ? here and here. Many of Martin?s prototypes ? built of balsa wood ? are literally out of the box, in that he puts the structural ribs on the outside of the fiddle body to ease his ability to make adjustments.

This passage from my article conveys how his purposeful rejection of orthodoxy was at least partly learned (and thus illustrates the potential to foster an enthusiasm for ?breaking things on the path to breakthroughs? in our classrooms):

In art school in the 1960s, a professor once tossed one of Mr. Martin?s sketches on the floor and scuffed it up, urging him to abandon caution, and he clearly absorbed that notion.

When a violinist tried an instrument at a recent workshop and one of its blunt shoulders got in the way of his wrist, Mr. Martin summarily sawed off the corner and sealed the opening with a scrap.

I?d like to spend part of this year finding and drawing attention to people who are the Douglas Martin equivalents trying to develop ways to bring illumination and cleaner, cheap sources of cooking energy to the billions who lack these core assets; devising scaleable means of providing potable water and sanitation (not easy) in poor places; closing the huge ?yield gap? between African farmers and there counterparts in many other regions; boosting environmental literacy and engagement with science?

Who?s out there?

Excerpts from Syrian President Assad's speech

BEIRUT (Reuters) - The following are excerpts from President Bashar al-Assad's speech in Damascus on Sunday in the capital's Opera House.

HOPE BORN FROM PAIN

"Today we meet and suffering permeates Syrian land and there is no place for joy in any corner of the country while security and safety are absent from its streets and alleyways."

"We meet today and there are mothers who have lost their finest children and families who have lost their providers, children who have been orphaned and brothers divided among the martyrs, the refugees, and the missing."

"But from the womb of pain hope must be born and from the depth of suffering the most important solutions are produced."

CALL TO MOBILIZE

"Syria will only exit this calamity by converting this energy into a total national mobilization to save the country from the clutches of a crisis which has no precedent in this region."

"Every citizen is responsible for doing what he can to offer something no matter how simple in his eyes, for the nation is for everyone and we all must defend it with all that we have."

"Terrorists holding the views of al Qaeda who call themselves jihadists are the ones running the terrorist operations here and we are fighting them. It is not impossible to destroy them if we have the courage."

"WAR IN EVERY SENSE OF THE WORD"

"Whoever talks solely of a political solution only is turning a blind eye to the facts and he is either ignorant or has been fooled into selling his people and the blood of martyrs for free and we will not allow this."

"We are now in a state of war in every sense of the word. This war targets Syria using a handful of Syrians and many foreigners. Thus, this is a war of defending the nation."

ASSAD'S INITIATIVE

"We will have dialogue with all those who opposed us politically and all who have rejected our positions as long as their positions were not based on trying to destroy our principles and national foundations."

"We will have dialogue with all parties and individuals that did not sell our country to the foreigner. The political solution will be along the following lines:

"The first stage: First of all, regional and foreign countries must stop funding, arming and harboring militants at the same time that gunmen stop all terrorist operations in order to ease the return of displaced Syrians to their original homes in safety and security."

"Immediately after that, all military operations by our armed forces will stop, though they will reserve the right to respond in the case of attack on the security of the nation or residents or public and private property."

"Second, a mechanism will be created to ensure commitment to all previous agreements for controlling the borders."

"Third, the current government will immediately begin intensive communications with all elements of Syrian society, its parties and organizations...It will hold a national dialogue conference that all forces interested in a solution in Syria can participate in."

"The second stage: First, the current government will hold a comprehensive national dialogue to reach a national pact that commits to the sovereignty of Syria and the unity and peace of its territory and the rejection of intervention in its affairs and the rejection of terrorism and violence in all its forms."

"This pact is what will outline the political future of Syria and will propose a new constitutional and legal system along with its political and economic features. It will agree on new laws for parties, elections and local administration."

"Second, the national pact will be sent for popular referendum."

"Third, an expanded government will be formed, which includes all elements of Syrian society and it will implement the articles of the pact."

"Fourth, the new constitution will be put to popular referendum and after it is confirmed, the expanded government will use the new agreed laws from the pact and the new constitution and will run new parliamentary elections."

"The third stage will be the forming of a new government according to the constitution."

"Second, a truth and reconciliation conference will be held and a general amnesty will be issued for all those arrested because of the events, in keeping with civil law."

"Third will be the work towards rehabilitating infrastructure and rebuilding and compensation to citizens hurt by events."

NVIDIA has always been at the forefront of gaming, and their mobile Tegra chips are no different. You may have a Tegra device in your Android arsenal and know just how good it can be, or maybe you've heard us talk about hot Tegra games. If so, and you're like me and love to see things pushed to their limit, seeing the demo of Dead Trigger 2 was a thing of beauty.

We'll have to wait to get our hands on a Tegra 4 device and try the game ourselves, but Simon will be talking with Madfinger at CES, and you can bet he's going to try to get some hands-on time with this one himself. NVIDIA is bringing it!

Your Home Retail Business? - CP Reports

Your Home Retail Business

By Sam Seiden, Online Trading Academy VP of Education

Walmart, Tesco, Costco, Sam?s Club, just to name a few?these are some of the biggest retailers in the world, huge operations that make fortunes in revenue. How do they do it? What is their big secret? Simple: at the end of the day, they have mastered the art of buying at wholesale prices and selling at retail prices. Wait, this is supposed to be an article on trading so why write about the retail world of gadgets, clothes, appliances, and more? It?s an important topic if you want to understand how to be a consistently profitable trader. Their buying and selling actions in the markets they operate in are no different than the actions of the consistently profitable trader. The difference is that the trader can do all this from the comforts of their own home.

Let?s get more specific with these actions so that you can become a better trader by the end of this article. For Wal-Mart to profit, they have to make sure that there are many willing buyers to pay the retail prices they are charging. When we trade, we must do exactly the same thing, we need retail buyers who are willing to buy at the retail (supply) price levels we are charging. Take the example below from a recent live XLT (online trading room) trading session. In the session, we identified a supply level in the Euro. This is a price level that according to our rule based analysis had much more willing supply than demand. Another word for a supply level is ?retail?. A short while later, price rallied up to our pre-determined supply (retail) level which means people were convinced the Euro was worth buying at our retail price. After they bought, price declined as it should and we were able to buy lower, profiting from this trade.
Again, this is really no different from paying extreme retail prices for a new car. As soon as you sign the papers and drive it off the lot, the price declines dramatically. The first step in this process is to accurately identify key supply (retail) prices in a market. The second step is to wait for someone to buy from you at that level. Just like people walking into Walmart each day and pay retail prices, people will be more than willing to pay you retail prices in the markets. This is because most people buy on good news and in strong up trends. In both cases, they are typically buying at or near retail prices.

Figure 1: Euro ? 5 Minute Chart
To view the article in its entirety, including any figures, please copy and paste the following link into your internet browser window: http://lessons.tradingacademy.com/article/your-home-retail-business/

Take a good look at the chart and specifically look at the supply level and then the rally into it followed by the decline. We are looking at the Euro. That picture is the same picture of price movement if you were to buy something at Walmart and then try to sell it at a garage sale at your home. You are going to sell it for a much lower price than you bought it for at the store. Whether we are talking the Euro trade or a retail store product, the chart is identical. Just like the retail store, you must know what retail price to sell at (supply levels) and you must have the patience and discipline to wait for someone to be willing to buy at that level.

You really do have a retail operation going at your home if you think about it. Good traders know price levels that are too low (demand/wholesale) and price levels that are too high (supply/retail). They buy at wholesale prices from people who are trained, conditioned, and willing to sell at wholesale prices. They also sell at retail prices to buyers who are trained, conditioned, and willing to buy at retail prices. Then, they just repeat the same simple process over and over for the entire life of their trading career, just like the retail store. While we do this work for you in our trading rooms, the XLT (Extended Learning Track), we do it in a very educational way so that you can start your retail business at home. My hope is that explaining it this way may help you understand that trading is not reinventing the wheel. How the profitable short term and long term trader makes money is exactly how the retail store makes money. The difference is the trader has a lot less overhead and headache.

Hope this was helpful, have a great day.

Self Improvement Times: Coping With Stress at the Workplace

The workplace is arguably the primary source of stress for most working people. From beating deadlines to dealing with co-workers, stress is part of the normal daily routines on the job. The intensity of stress varies depending on the type of work. Some jobs are innately more stressful than others, especially those that involve danger to life such as combat-related duties.

Fight or flight

Stress factors, job specifications and situations may vary but stress is fundamentally an instinctive physiological and psychological reaction. Stress is based on the "fight-or-flight" instinct reaction to danger or perceived danger. However, even without actual danger stress reactions still occur and usually lead to health-related problems if not properly managed.

Many of the debilitating and chronic diseases that plague humans today can be directly attributed to recurring stress reactions. Diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular diseases and cancer are just some of the serious illnesses that could be prevented with the help of stress management.

Stress management

Coping with stress at work is primarily a psychological function that requires some practice. Different individuals may react with varying degrees of stress given the same situation and stress factors. Some people are easily irritable while others are more resilient. Regardless of the individual differences, effectively managing stress can be divided into three general categories.

Attitude - Coping with stress will largely depend on individual attitude. People who are generally optimistic in their outlook in life can adjust better to the various challenges in life. As the saying goes, "When life gives you lemons, make lemonade." Positive attitude can be learned and practiced. It is mainly about hope and good prospects, focusing on finding solutions rather than being burdened by problems.

Relaxation - When the situation becomes too stressful, simple deep breath exercise can help. It can increase blood oxidation and improve circulation. Relaxation techniques do not need to be expensive or complicated. Finding a quiet place at the office where one can collect composure, for instance, can help in relaxation. Listening to soft music may also provide some relief.

Efficiency - Being organized and highly efficient at work can help employees coping with stress simply because the piling up of tasks will be avoided. Accomplishing the required tasks will also provide some sense of accomplishment. Efficiency at work can be achieved by eliminating procrastinations and by having well-defined daily plans.

Social skills - People who are friendly and easy to like are less likely to experience stress due to uncooperative and rude co-workers, including bosses. Developing good social skills can also help employees move up in the corporate ladder and be given leadership responsibilities. Social skills are oftentimes more valuable than technical skills especially when it comes to large organizations.
