Ivory Coast, Ghana get kind African Cup draw

Associated Press Sports

updated 6:41 p.m. ET Oct. 29, 2011

MALABO, Equatorial Guinea (AP) -Tournament favorite Ivory Coast was grouped with Sudan, Burkina Faso and Angola in Saturday's draw for next year's African Cup of Nations.

World Cup quarterfinalist Ghana was drawn alongside Cup of Nations newcomer Botswana, Mali and Guinea for the 16-team African championship in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea, which kicks off on Jan. 21.

Ivory Coast and Ghana avoided the likes of Senegal, Morocco and Tunisia in a kind draw for the two main contenders.

In Group A, co-host Equatorial Guinea will open the tournament in Bata on its Cup of Nations debut against surprise qualifier Libya. Senegal and Zambia make up the group.

Gabon will face Niger - another first-time qualifier - and North African hopes Morocco and Tunisia in Group C. Morocco and Tunisia open their campaigns against each other on Jan. 23.

In the absence of three-time defending champion Egypt and former winners Cameroon, Nigeria and South Africa - who all failed to qualify - top-ranked African team Ivory Coast and Ghana are tipped to meet in the Feb. 12 final in the Gabon capital Libreville.

Ivory Coast will start its quest for a second African title, and first since 1992, against Sudan in Group B. Ghana will play Botswana first up in Group D.

Equatorial Guinea plays Libya and Senegal faces Zambia in the opening two games of the tournament, which are set to be played back-to-back at the same stadium on Jan. 21.

The top two teams from each group will qualify for the quarterfinals, with the tournament played across four cities: Bata and Malabo in Equatorial Guinea and Libreville and Franceville in Gabon.

Ghana is the most successful team at the 2012 edition with four Cup of Nations crowns. Tunisia, Sudan, Ivory Coast and Morocco have all won the competition once.

Burkina Faso's place at the tournament was confirmed by the Confederation of African Football after the ruling body rejected an appeal by Namibia over an ineligible player in the Burkinabe squad. CAF said the protest from the Namibians - who lost out to Burkina Faso in qualifying - did not follow correct procedure and was therefore rejected.

President Ali Bongo of Gabon and President Teodoro Obiang Nguema of Equatorial Guinea attended Saturday's draw, which was overseen by CAF President Issa Hayatou.

Alaska police say 1 killed in hotel shootout (AP)

ANCHORAGE, Alaska ? Alaska police say that one person has been killed in a shooting at an Anchorage Hotel.

Lt. Dave Parker says police locked down the Millennium Hotel Saturday night and are searching for a suspect.

Media reports say half a dozen police cars and two ambulances were at the site and officers armed with rifles were covering an exit.

Parker tells The Associated Press that police have identified the suspect. No motive has been established, but Parker says investigators have determined that the victim had been targeted and it wasn't a random attack.

He says police have also surrounded the suspect's residence in Anchorage.

Parker says hotel guests have been asked to remain in their rooms to await evacuation as police methodically search the building.

Perry says 'no doubt' Obama is an American citizen (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry said Wednesday that he has "no doubt" that President Barack Obama is an American citizen, staking out a definitive position on the matter after spending several days stoking widely debunked claims that the Democrat was born overseas.

Perry's comments come as he's struggling to right his troubled campaign, and as some Republicans question whether he's done irreparable damage to his run by dabbling in the so-called "birther" controversy in recent days.

Some Republicans privately worry that his comments about Obama's birth certificate may have endeared him to the party's conservative wing that questions the legitimacy of Obama's presidency but also may have started to marginalize the Texas governor from the larger electorate. That could put the general election at risk should Perry win the GOP nomination.

His comments certainly irked several GOP luminaries, like former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, who in recent days have urged Republican presidential candidates to stop raising the issue. Others, like Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour and campaign rival Jon Huntsman say it's bad for the GOP.

"If we take our eye off the ball called debt, if we take our eye off the ball called our position in the world ? continue going with you know, two wars simultaneously ? of course we can lose it," Utah's former governor said, speaking on ABC news' political webcast "Top Line" on Wednesday. "And if we kind of begin wasting time on the nonsensical and the silly issues like birtherism."

Karl Rove, George W. Bush's political strategist, said Perry may be hurting his campaign. "You associate yourself with a nutty view like that, and you damage yourself," Rove said on Fox News.

Perhaps for that reason, Perry seemed to try to put the issue to rest in an interview with two Florida news organizations, Bay News 9's "Political Connections" in Tampa and the St. Petersburg Times.

Asked whether he had any doubt that Obama was an American citizen, Perry said: "I have no doubt about it." But he also suggested that raising the issue is "fun" and that people should "lighten up a little bit."

"I don't think I was expressing doubts," Perry said of his comments in recent days that raised questions about Obama's birthplace. "I was having some fun with Donald Trump," the real estate mogul who this summer flirted with a presidential run and stoked the "birther" talk.

Speculation about Obama's birthplace ? a way to question whether his presidency is legitimate_ has swirled among conservatives for years. As Trump fanned the issue earlier this year, Obama held a news conference to release his long-form birth certificate and try to put the issue to rest.

While other Republican presidential candidates have kept their distance on the issue, Perry deeply waded into the topic in an interview published over the weekend in Parade magazine. He was quoted as saying that he has "no reason to believe" that Obama was not born in the United States. He also said he still wasn't sure if Obama's birth certificate is legit.

"I don't have a definitive answer," Perry said in that interview. And when it was suggested that Perry ? and the world ? had seen Obama's birth certificate, Perry said: "I don't know. Have I?"

Then, in an interview with CNBC and The New York Times, Perry said the birth certificate question was "a good issue to keep alive."

"It's fun to poke him a little bit," Perry said.

And by Tuesday, Perry refused in South Carolina to answer a reporter's direct question about whether he believed Obama when he offered proof ? in the form of a birth certificate ? that he was born in Hawaii.

"I'll cut you off right there," Perry said when asked about Obama's birth certificate. "That is one of the biggest distractions that there is going. We need to be talking about jobs."

Perry also offered to release his own birth certificate, saying: "If somebody wants to see my birth certificate, I'd be happy to show it to them," Perry said. "But the fact is that this is a distraction, and Americans really don't care about that, if you want to know the truth of the matter."

PHILADELHPIA (AP) ? Flyers defenseman Chris Pronger will miss two to three weeks and spend the next few days on bed rest after taking a stick to the right eye against Toronto.

Pronger and Toronto's Mikhail Grabovski sprinted for a loose puck in the circle after a rebound off Flyers goalie Sergei Bobrovsky on Monday night. Grabovski slapped at the puck, but his stick connected with Pronger's stick and the blade shot straight up into the defenseman's face.

Pronger screamed in agony and instantly clutched his face. Hunched over, he skated straight to the bench, his hands over his eyes, and went to the dressing room with 8:02 left in the first period.

Pronger does not wear a visor. General manager Paul Holmgren said Pronger would not be cleared to play unless he wears one. Holmgren said Pronger complained of blurred vision.

"I think he was very scared and rightly so," Holmgren said. "When something like that happens to your eye, you're worried about what's going on. I think he settled down over a period of time and was fine when he left."

The Flyers beat the Maple Leafs 4-2.

Libya declared free, but Gadhafi death questioned (AP)

TRIPOLI, Libya ? Libya's interim rulers declared the country liberated on Sunday after an eight-month civil war, launching the oil-rich nation on what is meant to be a two-year transition to democracy. But they laid out future plans with an Islamist tone that could rattle their Western backers.

The joyful ceremony formally marking the end of Moammar Gadhafi's 42-year tyranny was also clouded by mounting pressure from the leaders of the NATO campaign that helped secure victory to investigate whether Gadhafi, dragged wounded but alive out of a drainage ditch last week, was then executed by his captors.

The circumstances of Gadhafi's death remain unclear. However, critics said the gruesome spectacle of his blood-streaked body laid out as a trophy for a third day of public viewing in a commercial freezer tests the new leadership's commitment to the rule of law.

Britain's defense secretary, Philip Hammond, said the Libyan revolutionaries' image had been "a little bit stained" by Gadhafi's violent death. Both he and U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said a full investigation is necessary.

Gadhafi's capture and the fall of his hometown of Sirte, the last loyalist stronghold, set the stage for the long-awaited declaration of liberation, delivered by the head of the National Transitional Council, Mustafa Abdul-Jalil.

He did not mention the circumstances surrounding Gadhafi's death ? mobile phone videos showed the wounded leader being taunted and beaten by a mob after his capture. But he urged his people to eschew hatred.

"You should only embrace honesty, patience, and mercy," Abdul-Jalil told a flag-waving crowd of several thousand at the declaration ceremony in the eastern city of Benghazi, the birthplace of the uprising against Gadhafi.

Abdul-Jalil laid out a vision for a new Libya with an Islamist tint, saying Islamic Sharia law would be the "basic source" of legislation and existing laws that contradict the teachings of Islam would be nullified.

He outlined several changes to align with Islamic law, including putting caps on interest for bank loans and lifting restrictions on the number of wives Libyan men can take. The Muslim holy book, the Quran, allows men up to four wives.

Abdul-Jalil thanked those who fought and fell in the war, saying they "are somewhere better than here, with God." Displaying his own piety, he then stepped aside from the podium and knelt to offer a prayer of thanks.

Using Sharia as the main source of legislation is stipulated in the constitution of neighboring Egypt. Still, Egyptian laws remain largely secular as Sharia does not cover all aspects of modern day life.

In Brussels, neither the EU nor NATO wanted to address the issue of Sharia law. A NATO official said it was for the Libyans to decide on the system in their own country.

"We trust the Libyan authorities to build an inclusive Libya, respectful of human rights and the rule of law," said an official who could not be identified for the same reason.

Libya's revolt erupted in February as part of anti-government protests spreading across the Middle East. Islamist groups stand to gain ground in neighboring Tunisia and Egypt, which shook off their dictators several months ago. Tunisia has taken the biggest steps so far on the path to democracy, voting Sunday for a new assembly, while Egypt's parliamentary election is set for next month.

Libya's struggle has been the bloodiest so far in the region. Mass protests quickly turned into a civil war that killed thousands and paralyzed the country. Gadhafi loyalists held out for two more months after the fall of the capital of Tripoli in late August. Gadhafi's hometown of Sirte fell last week, but Gadhafi's son and one-time heir apparent, Seif al-Islam, apparently escaped with some of his supporters.

The anti-Gadhafi forces enjoyed strong Western political and military support during their revolt, especially from the U.S., Britain and France, and NATO airstrikes were key to their victory.

Abdul-Jalil paid tribute to the Gulf Cooperation Council, a six-nation alliance led by Saudi Arabia, the Arab League and the European Union. NATO performed its task with "efficiency and professionalism," he said.

President Barack Obama congratulated Libyans on the declaration.

"After four decades of brutal dictatorship and eight months of deadly conflict, the Libyan people can now celebrate their freedom and the beginning of a new era of promise," he said.

In Brussels, NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen welcomed the declaration and said NATO's mission in Libya "is very close to completion," referring to the alliance's decision to end air patrols on Oct. 31.

In Libya, leaders have said a new interim government is to be formed within a month, following by elections for a constitutional assembly within eight months. Elections for a parliament and president would then follow in the year after that.

For a third day, Gadhafi's body remained on display Sunday in a commercial freezer in the port city of Misrata, which suffered from a weeks-long bloody siege by regime forces in the spring. People have lined up since Friday to view the body, which was laid out on a mattress on the freezer floor. The bodies of Gadhafi's son Muatassim and his ex-defense minister Abu Bakr Younis also were put on display, and people wearing surgical masks have filed past, snapping photos of the bodies.

It remains unclear what happened between the time Gadhafi was captured alive in Sirte on Thursday and arrived dead in Misrata later that day. Libyan leaders say he was killed in crossfire during battles for the city.

However, the New York-based group Human Rights Watch, which viewed the bodies, said video footage, photos and other information it obtained "indicate that they might have been executed after being detained."

"Finding out how they died matters," said Sarah Leah Whitson of Human Rights Watch. "It will set the tone for whether the new Libya will be ruled by law or by summary violence."

Mahmoud Jibril, the acting Libyan prime minister, said he would not oppose an inquiry into Gadhafi's death, but there is "no reason" to doubt the credibility of an official report that he died in crossfire.

"Have you seen a video of somebody killing him? I haven't seen any video tape or mobile film that shows somebody is killing Gadhafi," Jibril told reporters in Jordan where he was attending the World Economic Forum.

"What I told the press several times ... (is) that the coroner says in the medical report that he (Gadhafi) was already wounded, taken out, put in that truck and on the way to the field hospital there was crossfire," Jibril said. He added that it was unclear whether the fatal bullet was fired by loyalists or revolutionary forces.

Addressing the celebrations around Gadhafi's body, Jibril told the BBC in an interview on Sunday: "You have to appreciate the agony that people went through for 42 years."

Dr. Othman al-Zintani, Libya's chief forensic pathologist, said he performed an autopsy that confirmed that Gadhafi was killed by a gunshot to the head. However, that finding did not shed light on the circumstances of his death, and al-Zintani said he could not elaborate until a full report has been sent to the attorney general.

Al-Zintani told The Associated Press Gadhafi's body was removed from the freezer and taken to a secret location for the autopsy. He said he also examined the body of Muatassim.

The vast majority of Libyans seemed unconcerned about the circumstances of the hated leader's death.

"If he (Gadhafi) was taken to court, this would create more chaos, and would encourage his supporters," said Salah Zlitni, 31, who owns a pizza parlor in downtown Tripoli. "Now it's over."

Police arrest 2 drivers in Chinese girl's death (AP)

BEIJING ? Police formally arrested two drivers suspected of running over a toddler who died a week after she was struck on a busy market street in southern China and was ignored by passers-by, newspapers reported Sunday.

The Beijing News and other outlets said Sunday police in the city of Foshan concluded their initial investigation and ordered the two men formally arrested, a step that almost always leads to a trial.

It did not say what they were being charged with and calls to Foshan police were unanswered.

The death of 2-year-old Wang Yue gained widespread coverage in the Chinese media and prompted soul-searching over declining morality and callousness toward the sufferings of others.

The accident on Oct. 13 was captured by gruesome security camera footage, leading to police identifying the vehicles.

For seven minutes after the first van struck the girl, 18 people walked or cycled by the bleeding toddler before a scrap picker scoops her up and takes her to her mother, who rushes into the street looking for her.

NVIDIA's Jen-Hsun Huang: Windows on ARM should hit tablets first, battling Intel is a bad idea, would love his chips in iPad

NVIDIA's founder and president Jen-Hsun Huang has never been one to dodge a question, and that made for an excellent closing interview here at AsiaD. Outside of (re)confirming what lies ahead for Tegra, he also spoke quite openly about his feeling towards Windows on ARM in response to a question from Joanna Stern. Here's the bulk of his reply:

"It's important for [Microsoft] not to position these as PCs. From a finesse perspective -- I can't speak on their behalf -- but I would come out with tablets first with Windows on ARM. It helps to establish that this isn't a PC. Will yesterday's Office run on tomorrow's Windows on ARM PC? Will a new version of Office run on tomorrow's Windows on ARM tablets? Both questions are about legacy, and both are about Office. The actual implementation of it is radically different. I see no reason to make Office 95 to run on Windows on ARM. I think it would be wonderful, absolutely wonderful -- I'd say, as someone who uses Windows -- it would be almost a requirement to me that [the ARM] device runs Windows interoperably. If Office runs on Windows on ARM -- it's the killer app. Everything else is on the web."

He elaborated to say that he would hope Office for Windows on ARM would support the same files that today's Office does, much the same way that Office for Mac eventually synced up with its Windows-based sibling. For more from Huang's interview, hop on past the break!
