Boise State builds big lead, barely hangs on against New Mexico

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. ? Boise State football coach Chris Petersen walked out of the locker room to meet the media after another closer-than-it-should-have-been victory Saturday at University Stadium.

?How are you?? somebody asked.

?Three and one,? Petersen replied, citing the team?s record knowing that he?d face another set of questions about the Broncos? inability to finish.

The Broncos squandered nearly all of a 25-point halftime lead on their way to a 32-29 defeat of New Mexico, a rebuilding program that appears on its way out of the Mountain West cellar.

Boise State built its 25-0 lead with help from three New Mexico fumbles.

The Lobos (2-3) fought back in the conference opener thanks to two Broncos fumbles, including one on the opening kickoff of the second half.

?We?ll never question their heart,? Petersen said of his players. ?We told them that in the locker room. I think those guys compete and go hard, but we?ve got to play better.?

On a day when the offense showed significant improvement in the red zone (four TDs in six drives) ? junior quarterback Joe Southwick played his best game (career highs of 311 yards and three TDs) and senior D.J. Harper and redshirt freshman Jay Ajayi combined for 216 rushing yards ? it was the previously reliable defense that blinked.

New Mexico scored touchdowns on its first four second-half drives without throwing a pass, including 96- and 75-yard marches. The Lobos used their triple-option attack to rush for 330 yards overall.

?Their coach did a great job working off us,? said senior defensive tackle Mike Atkinson, who forced two fumbles during the first half. ?They came out and played completely different football. We didn?t do our job as well as we should have. Give respect to their coach and their players.?

Petersen predicted this might happen at his Monday press conference, when he was grilled about the underperforming offense.

?We could be having this same conversation about our defense next week,? he said then.

New Mexico gashed Boise State on an outside option play in the second half where the Lobos always seemed to have the quarterback and a pitch man against one defender ? an impossible situation for the defense. They hit plays of 27, 29 and 40 yards to key the two long touchdown drives.

?We?re trying to mix up some calls, mix up some blitzes, to take some chances,? Petersen said. ?It can turn into a guessing game out there and that?s a scary situation.?

Boise State?s offense was nearly unstoppable in the first half ? with three touchdowns, a field goal and a punt before choosing to run out the clock in the final minute (Petersen didn?t want to risk a turnover, he said). New Mexico crossed the Boise State 40 twice but fumbled both times.

?The first half was awesome, we did a great job,? Southwick said.

The second half was another story ? almost another game.

And it started with the first play. Sophomore Dallas Burroughs fumbled on the kickoff return, handing the ball to the Lobos on the Boise State 26-yard line.

?In the second half, we came out fighting and showed them we were not giving up,? said linebacker Joe Stoner, whose team won one game each of the past three seasons. ?This is a whole different era. We just want them to know that if you are going to come into our home turf, you are going to have to play us for the whole four quarters.?

The Broncos seemed to regain control early in the fourth quarter with an 8-yard TD catch by Shane Williams-Rhodes for a 32-14 lead.

Williams-Rhodes, the true freshman with electrifying quickness, caught a quick hitch at the line of scrimmage, faked inside and cut outside ? leaving the defensive back spinning in place.

?That was a dynamic play,? said sophomore receiver Matt Miller, who led the team with nine catches for 68 yards. ?I wish I could do that. That just shows how explosive he is and what he can do in this offense.?

New Mexico came back with its own TD and Williams-Rhodes, who had a key fumble at Michigan State, lost the football again on the ensuing drive. Stoner scooped the ball and ran to the Boise State 1, where freshman running quarterback Cole Gautsche scored a touchdown and two-point conversion to pull within 32-29 with 7:42 left.

?That?s a back-breaker,? Petersen said.

After a missed field goal, New Mexico took over at its own 27 with 3:24 to tie or win the game. The Lobos didn?t even get a first down.

On third-and-3, senior linebacker Tommy Smith read the play perfectly and tackled Gautsche for a 1-yard loss. On fourth-and-4, starting quarterback B.R. Holbrook ? the passer who barely played in the second half ? entered and dropped back to throw.

Smith was responsible for the back, who stayed in to block. Free to roam, Smith anticipated a throw to the wide side of the field and slipped into the passing lane. He dropped the interception ? but a breakup was good enough.

?I?m proud of our guys, how hard they fight, and they make plays when they need to,? Petersen said. ?On both sides, they really did that. It wasn?t pretty.?

Swim tests and PE no longer a requirement at University of Chicago

Sept. 28, 2012

Dive Summary:

  • The University of Chicago became the latest institution this month to do away with a swimming proficiency test once required for graduation while also nixing its undergraduate physical education requirements--and, in effect, a fitness test used to place out of those classes.?
  • Only a handful of colleges still require swim tests, including a few Ivy League institutions, military academies, and a few women's and small liberal arts colleges.
  • Details are limited as to what the future of fitness and athletics at the school will look like, but PE classes will now be taken voluntarily and not-for-credit, and Karen Warren Coleman, vice president for campus life and student services, will soon announce a task force to "promote a culture of physical fitness and athletics on campus" and expand the school's PE offerings, athletics and recreation programming.

From the article:

The University of Chicago this month became the latest institution to drop a swimming proficiency test required for graduation. But Chicago made another change, as well: it will eliminate its physical education requirements and, in doing so, cut the fitness test students could take to place out of the fitness classes. In a statement sent to all undergraduates, College Dean John W. Boyer and Karen Warren Coleman, vice president for campus life and student services, said students will instead "be invited to participate in an expanded array" of voluntary physical education, athletics and recreation programs. ...

(AP) ? Keegan Bradley went from a rookie to a rock star in the Ryder Cup, and Phil Mickelson saw it coming.

Moments after Bradley poured in an 18-foot birdie putt on the second hole Friday morning, Mickelson stood off to the side of the tee box to watch Bradley prepare to smash another drive. He nodded in the direction of Luke Donald and Sergio Garcia, who had never lost a foursomes match.

Mickelson grinned and said, "They're not going to know what hit them."

Turns out he wasn't just talking about one match. Bradley made a 25-foot birdie putt to win the opening match on the 15th hole. Then, Bradley and Mickelson ganged up on Europe's top tandem of Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell, winning three straight holes out of the box and closing them out when Mickelson hit a 7-iron to 2 feet on the 17th hole at Medinah.

It set the tone for a day filled with endless cheering and plenty of American red on the scoreboard, giving the U.S. team a 5-3 lead over Europe despite Tiger Woods getting shut out on opening day for the fourth time in the Ryder Cup.

"It could be the best day of my life," Bradley said.

Saturday figures to be a strange day for Woods in the Ryder Cup ? his first time in uniform without a tee time. Sticking to his plan, U.S. captain Davis Love decided to bench Woods in the third session of matches to make sure his team is rested for the decisive singles matches Sunday. That ends Woods' streak of playing in 31 consecutive matches.

As for Bradley? His energy is boundless.

Mickelson took Bradley under his wing last year for a series of money games at the majors to prepare the 26-year-old from New England for a stage like this. And did he ever deliver. He was into every shot, cocking his head to the side to read putts, charging up the gallery and Mickelson in a command performance.

"This is literally what I've dreamt about since I was a little kid," Bradley said. "I got to do it next to my idol all day."

He wasn't the only rookie to shine on a mild day in the Chicago suburbs.

Nicolas Colsaerts, the 29-year-old from Belgium, helped Europe avoid getting shut out in afternoon fourballs by single-handedly taking down Woods and Steve Stricker.

Colsaerts made eight birdies and an eagle ? a 10-under 62 if he was keeping score on his own. He teamed with Lee Westwood, who was just along for this amazing ride for a 1-up victory that ended 11 hours of action so typical in this high-charged event.

"I don't think there has ever been a better debut than that," Westwood said.

Woods and Stricker also lost to Ian Poulter and Justin Rose in morning foursomes, making this the fourth time in the seven Ryder Cups that Woods has played that he lost both matches on the opening day.

There was nothing Woods could do against Colsaerts, the biggest hitter in Europe who isn't too bad with the putter, either.

"Nicolas probably had one of the greatest putting rounds I've ever seen," Woods said, high praise coming from a 14-time major champion.

Woods turned in a mixed performance. He missed a 6-foot birdie putt on the 15th to fall 2 down, and then came back with a bending, 25-foot birdie putt on the 16th and a shot into 4 feet on the 17th that looked as if it might square the match. Instead, Colsaerts rolled in a 25-foot birdie putt for a halve. Woods had a 12-foot birdie putt on the 18th to halve the match, only it caught the left lip.

"We ran into a guy who made everything today," Woods said. "I don't know what he shot. He was like 7 under through 10. I quit counting after that."

Love said he told Woods and Stricker they would be sitting out the foursomes matches Saturday morning, "and I can guarantee you, neither one of them are very happy about it. Not because they are sitting out; because they have to wait till tomorrow afternoon to come back."

Both captains made sure all 12 of their players got into the game early, though European captain Jose Maria Olazabal set himself up for second-guessing when he sat out Donald, Garcia and Poulter for the afternoon matches. They have a combined 31-13-5 record in the Ryder Cup.

Olazabal put Donald and Westwood together for Saturday morning, while Colsaerts will play with Garcia. McIlroy and McDowell will play for a third time, although the Spanish captain said the pairings were not the problem.

"I'm going to make it clear to the boys that they need to step it up," he said. "They need to play better golf, simple as that. There is no secret about this game. You have to make more birdies than your opponent. And if you don't do that, you're going to struggle."

Mickelson set an American record by playing in his ninth Ryder Cup, and he won his opening two matches for the first time in his career. Mickelson came up with some big putts and amazing shots, and the 42-year-old felt about 10 years younger playing alongside Bradley.

"I felt young," Mickelson said. "And it felt great."

Europe has won six of the last eight times in the Ryder Cup, and it wasn't about to hang its head after one day. It was leading all four of the opening matches early Friday under a gloomy sky. The sun came out, and the Americans came to life.

"There's a long way to go in this tournament," Rose said. "There's ebbs and flows. Obviously, there's momentum for the U.S. team right now, but that could all swing back in our favor tomorrow."

Even so, the Americans headed to their team room full of confidence. It won five of eight matches without getting a point from Woods, and they picked up a little extra momentum when Mickelson and Bradley took down McIlroy, the No. 1 player in the world.

The Ryder Cup again lived up to its billing as the most exciting tournament in golf with relentless action, huge swings in momentum and endless cheers.

Bubba Watson asked the crowd to keep chanting and cheering when he stepped to the tee for his afternoon fourballs with Webb Simpson, and the Masters champion belted his drive down the middle, raising his driver to play to the crowd. Then, the Americans did a number of Paul Lawrie and Peter Hanson, going 6 up through eight holes and closing them out on the 14th hole.

Matt Kuchar ran off four straight birdies as he and Dustin Johnson built an early lead against Rose and Martin Kaymer.

The only rookie who didn't deliver a point was FedEx Cup champion Brandt Snedeker, though it wasn't from a lack of effort. Snedeker and Furyk were 3 down through 12 holes against McIlroy and McDowell in the morning when they put together a furious rally, with Furyk carrying the bulk of the load. They squared the match going to the 18th when Snedeker hit a drive toward the hospitality tents well right of the fairway, and Furyk couldn't convert a 20-foot par putt to halve the match.

But it was a sign of the American fight.

Bradley was at his best on the par-3 13th, perhaps the toughest tee shot because it was long and into the wind, requiring a hybrid. He hit it to 15 feet left of the flag, and as the crowd chanted, "USA! USA!" Bradley nodded at them repeatedly.

Mickelson, who first played in these matches in 1995, smiled and gently patted him on the back to let him soak up the moment. Lefty then holed the birdie putt for a 2-up lead, and Garcia missed a 3 1/2-foot par putt on the next hole. It was the Spaniard's first loss in 10 foursomes matches dating to 1999.

Bradley was so into the moment that his focus was broken walking up the 15th hole when he spotted fans holding a large American flag on the left side of the gallery. He jogged over to them for high-fives, waited for Mickelson to play a wedge into the green, and then holed the 25-foot birdie putt.

His caddie, Steve Hale, swung the flagstick around like a baseball bat until Mickelson's caddie reminded him to put it in the hole for Donald to play a bunker shot.

"There's a simple reason why Keegan is perfect for the Ryder Cup," Mickelson said. "The more pressure the situation, the better he plays, the better he sees the shot, the better he focuses. And the better the result. As a player, you feel more pressure and intensity during these matches than you do at any other event.

"And that's when he's at his best."

Jason Dufner, another American rookie, actually showed some emotion with a tiny fist pump when his 15-foot birdie putt on the ninth stopped next to the cup, then dropped in the left side. Dufner made birdie on the next hole for a foursomes win with Zach Johnson over Westwood and Francesco Molinari.

Poulter holed a bunker shot, a long birdie putt and a clutch par putt from 7 feet on the 16th hole that carried he and Rose to victory over Woods and Stricker. Poulter has lost only three times in 12 matches in his Ryder Cup career. Two of those had been to Woods.

"I never wanted to have another one," Poulter said.

Next up is another long day of foursomes and fourballs, a chance for Europe to get back in the game going into the Sunday singles.

Love could not have asked for a better start, particularly from his rookies ? and especially from Bradley, who was sad to see this dream day come to an ed.

"Oh, baby," Bradley said. "I wish we could go 36 more."

Helicopter heroes save lives of severely injured patients

ScienceDaily (Sep. 26, 2012) ? The benefits and cost effectiveness of helicopter transport for severely injured patients is of continued debate. New research published in BioMed Central's open access journal Critical Care shows that for severe blunt trauma, patients transported by helicopter had a lower risk of death, compared to those transported by road.

In a multi-centre study, based in university hospitals across France, researchers compared initial patient status at the scene of the accident, with time taken to get to hospital, type of treatment received pre-admission, and to health at discharge, or after 30 days.

At first there seemed to be no difference in mortality between those transported by helicopter and those by road, however once the data had been adjusted for severity of injury the results became clear. Patients transported by helicopter stood a better chance of survival than those transported by road.

Dr Thibaut Desmettre, who led this study, explained, "Transporting very ill patients is a balancing act. Overall it took longer for patients transported by helicopter to reach hospital and they tended to need more emergency care once admitted. On the other hand these patients were more intensively treated at the scene and en route than those transported by road-ambulance crews -- which might go some way towards explaining their improved chances of survival."

However the benefit seen could not all be attributed to the more aggressive therapy they received before, or after, they arrived at hospital. Dr Desmettre continued, "We were unable to measure the distance the patients travelled, nor where their accident occurred -- some accidents occur in places where road access is too difficult -- and what impact this had on severity of injury or choice of sending a helicopter crew." Helicopters are a costly and limited resource and unfortunately the benefit to patients has to evaluated in this light. However, for these patients, with the most severe injuries, transport by helicopter saves lives.

Up to 700,000 Syrians could flee by year-end: UNHCR

GENEVA (Reuters) - The number of refugees fleeing Syria could reach 700,000 by the end of the year, the U.N. refugee agency said on Thursday, almost four times its previous forecast.

About 294,000 refugees fleeing 18 months of conflict in Syria have crossed into four neighboring countries - Jordan, Iraq, Lebanon and Turkey - or await registration there, it said.

"This is a significant outflow taking place, 100,000 people in August, 60,000 in September and at the moment 2,000 or 3,000 per day or night," Panos Moumtzis, regional refugee coordinator for the U.N. refugee agency UNHCR, told a news briefing.

About 5,000-6,000 Syrians have reached other parts of north Africa, mainly Egypt, while other refugees are turning up in southern Europe, including Cyprus and Greece, he said.

The previous forecast of 185,000 refugees was surpassed in August.

U.N. aid agencies and humanitarian partners issued a funding appeal of $487.9 million to help meet the needs of the rapidly growing outflow from Syria.

2013 Ford Fusion Hybrid: Active Noise Cancellation Helps Deliver ...

? All-new 2013 Ford Fusion Hybrid delivers EPA-certified 47 mpg city and 47 mpg highway for a 47 mpg combined rating, with Active Noise Cancellation technology

? Fusion Hybrid engineers tuned the gasoline engine more efficiently in rpm ranges that typically produce unpleasant powertrain sounds, now suppressed by an advanced noise cancellation system to give driver and passengers a quiet ride

Powertrain noise in the all-new Ford?Fusion Hybrid is like the proverbial tree that fell in the forest. With Active Noise Cancellation technology on board, if you don?t hear it, is it really even there?

Active Noise Cancellation technology helps enable the 2013 Fusion Hybrid sedan to deliver EPA-certified 47 mpg city and 47 mpg highway ratings that combine for 47 mpg overall.

The fuel economy connection may not be obvious, but Active Noise Cancellation allows Ford engineers to tune the car for more fuel-efficient operation.

Calibrating an engine requires careful balance between delivering the desired performance with the lowest possible fuel consumption and emissions, all while keeping it pleasant to drive.

?The Fusion Hybrid leverages this advanced technology to help deliver maximum fuel economy for the customer,? said Henry Ford Technical Fellow for NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness) Dr. Takeshi Abe. ?Reduced powertrain noise in the passenger compartment becomes the icing on the cake.?

At the lower speeds that help efficiency, engines produce booming, low-frequency sounds that can be unpleasant to the driver and passengers. Without Active Noise Cancellation, engineers have to keep the engine out of this operating range, sacrificing efficiency.

Yet to achieve peak fuel economy, a creative solution must be applied harnessing advanced audio technology to eradicate this unwanted sound.

A predictive control system notes driver behavior and how the engine responds, anticipating noise before it is even generated.

Three highly sensitive microphones are mounted in the Fusion Hybrid?s interior headliner ? two over the first seating row and one over the rear ? to detect and measure engine noise. These microphones send a signal to the Active Noise Cancellation control module in real time.

The module instantaneously and continuously generates opposing sound waves. This reversed wave is directed through the Fusion Hybrid?s audio system, combining with the original engine noise wave to cancel out any potentially objectionable sound.

The combination of the proactive and reactive signals ultimately provides a more pleasing effect for driver and passengers.

The infographic below depicts Active Noise Cancellation technology at work, showing the movement pattern of sound travel within the car. The lower panel depicts the cancellation of unwanted sounds, resulting in minimized residual noise.

Jesus and Dannia Balestena of Dough in the Box (credit: Becky Stein)

(Introduction by Jenny Turknett)

I remember the first time I stepped into Pine Street Market. Bacon. I stood rooted to my spot in the doorway, flooded with the heady scent. After I collected my white-paper-wrapped purchases and headed to the car ? with a glance behind for hounds attracted to the meaty perfume clinging to my clothes ? I reflected on this shop, so dedicated to perfecting its craft.

Jenny-Turknett-Review

AJC Dining Team member Jenny Turknett writes about Southern and neighborhood fare.

It?s the local producers like Pine Street that we feature in this, our Fall Dining Guide. In this year?s Spring Dining Guide, AJC chief dining critic John Kessler presented ?The Atlanta 50,? a guide to the top 50 restaurants defining metro Atlanta?s dining scene. In it, he noted white-linened dining no longer sets the standard, with many casual eateries stepping in to claim spots in the top 50.

We now spend a portion of our valuable dining dollars in places other than restaurants. We purchase handcrafted products sold in boutique shops, specialty grocers and at our local farmers markets. We seek out food trucks at their various weekly events throughout the city.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution?s Dining Team has put together a collection of where we spend our dollars picking up a batch of granola, a box of truffles, an espresso and more. We share our favorite food trucks to chase and our favorite shops to explore.

Tough choices were made. We weren?t able to include every specialty producer worthy of a mention. And that?s a good thing. For metro Atlanta.

We hope you enjoy this guide, where we answer the question we receive daily: ?Where?s your favorite place to get???

SWEET BAKED GOODS

The Bakery at Cakes & Ale (credit: Becky Stein)

The Bakery at Cakes & Ale (Becky Stein)

Alon?s

Everyone has a favorite item at this robust, ambitious bakery cafe. Perhaps the country French bread, the bite-sized cookies or the ginger-cinnamon scones. We think it makes the definitive chocolate cake. The Midnight Chocolate Cake combines dark layers of devil?s food with white chocolate mousse in lieu of icing. It?s the cake you want to buy for a birthday, then keep snacking on in the corner of the kitchen for the next three days. If no one is looking, try it for breakfast. ?John Kessler

Alpine Bakery

Look for the silos. That?s how you know you?ve found Alpine Bakery in the Crabapple area of Alpharetta. Scan the rows upon rows of layer cakes, pies and pastries until you zero in on the tall red-crumb-dusted mammoth of a red velvet cake. If you like a cheesecake, you?ll strike red gold with the red velvet cake. Moist and perfectly smushy layers of cake alternate with smooth cheesecake-like layers of cream cheese frosting. The portions are fantastically large, yet you won?t wish to share a single morsel. ?Jenny Turknett

Atlanta Cupcake Factory

As a self-confessed cupcake snob, I have one Atlanta spot I can recommend: Atlanta Cupcake Factory. While many cupcakes are either dry and crumbly or have grainy, overabundant frosting, the ones here avoid those common pitfalls. Chocolate- and cream cheese-based frostings swirled with flavorings dress the cakes in a range of flavors. Get your Girl Scout on with the minty chocolate grasshopper cupcake, spice it up with the diablo cupcake that packs a bit of heat, or go sweet and savory with the caramel cupcake complete with the crunch bits of salt. ?JT

The Bakery at Cakes & Ale

When he assumed his post at The Bakery at Cakes & Ale last spring, pastry chef Eric Wolitzky set out to capture metro Atlanta?s sweet tooth with his no-fuss homey baking style. He?s succeeded with items like his zesty Chocolate Mandarin cookie and Banana S?more Nut Bar. Yet, you?ll also find more refined options like pistachio macarons that melt into a luscious filling or the croissants with a feathery crust concealing a soft interior with a buttery tang. ?JT

The Cake Hag

Everyone always wants to know where to get a great cheesecake. If I?m not going to make it myself, I?ll get it from The Cake Hag. Cheesecakes come in regular, low-carb, gluten-free and sugar-free versions. My favorite is a thick wedge of the perfectly simple New York cheesecake, speckled with crunchy vanilla bean seeds and bright specks of lemon zest. Another popular seller, the sweet potato cr?me br?l?e, is a fluffier and more decadent cheesecake with hints of orange and coconut, laced with caramel on top. The Cake Hag also prepares layer cakes (try the carrot!), pies and other treats, all by order only. ?JT

501 Grant Street S.E., Atlanta, 678-760-6300

The Cookie Studio

The fact that Barbara O?Neill donates proceeds from this bakery to support the Atlanta Day Shelter for Women and Children doesn?t make her cookies taste any better. The fact is, these huge, flat cookies stand on their own merits, with an irresistible chewy-crisp texture. The chocolate chippers are definitive, but we go nuts for the butterscotch oatmeal and cherry-ginger explosion varieties, as well as the dark chocolate walnut.?JK

Dough in the Box

Jesus Balestena spends his nights making the 29 flavors of doughnuts for Marietta?s Dough in the Box, while his wife Dannia manages the store by day. The shop?s yeast dough contains no sugar and is fried in soybean oil, resulting in a doughnut with a big yeasty flavor without the cloying sweetness. The light and exceedingly tender doughnuts come in traditional flavors, with old-fashioned sour cream, apple fritters and simple glazed among the top sellers. ?JT

Pie Shop

Owner Mims Bledsoe left her graduate studies in philosophy to reinvigorate the craft of pie baking. She scours old cookbooks for inspiration and swears by all-butter crusts for the perfectly tender and flaky specimen. Pie Shop offers a weekly menu of both sweet and savory pies.In addition to traditional favorites like apple, key lime and Derby pie, look for playful flavors like watermelon chiffon (summer) and cherry chile. I?ve always been partial to the German chocolate pie and recently discovered a gooey banana-split-like banoffee (banana toffee) pie that could have you snarfing more than a single slice in one sitting. ?JT

Piece of Cake (Becky Stein)
Piece of Cake (Becky Stein)

Piece of Cake

This local chain understands something fundamental about layer cakes. No matter how professionally they?re assembled, iced and boxed, they have to feel homemade at some level. We love them all, but wait each Valentine?s Day for the annual appearance of strawberry cake with strawberry icing. ?JK

BREAD

Pure Knead Bakery (courtesy of business)

Pure Knead Bakery (Becky Stein)

H&F Bread Co.

This wholesale bakery makes the city?s best European-style crusty bread, including a fine baguette that really stands apart in this city. While the bread has long been available in restaurants and at select farmers markets, it is now available daily at the small retail outlet fronting the bakery. Take a chance with the daily offerings or call a day in advance for your pick of the product line. ?JK

1401 Ellsworth Industrial Blvd., Atlanta, 404-350-8877 (Also available at area farmers markets and specialty shops.)

Nazifa?s Bakery

Nazifa Garib makes the large, floppy flatbreads called nan throughout the Middle East and the Indian subcontinent. Her version is Iraqi, and it?s delectable. Large as a manhole cover and pocked with dark blisters, it has become a standard feature at Middle Eastern and Afghani restaurants around metro Atlanta and in local farmers markets, where it headlines her menu of sandwiches and dips. But to try this bread at its best, visit her small storefront and sample it fresh from the oven. ?JK

3711 N. Decatur Road, Decatur, 678-698-8871. (Also available at area farmers markets.)

Pure Knead

Pure Knead is an ?allergy-friendly? bakery with products free of gluten, dairy, soy, nuts and shellfish. These include breads, crackers, buns, cookies, bread pudding and cupcakes. The bakery hand-blends flours ? including millet, brown-rice flour, sorghum and tapioca ? which results in a remarkably elastic texture mimicking traditional wheat-flour breads in baked goods like the boule. The sliced sandwich bread and the olive boule, studded with Kalamata olives, are two of our household staples. ?JT

Pine Street Market

Soprasseta from Pine Street Market

Some suggest the bacon fad is done. They haven?t tasted Pine Street?s thick-cut and smoky molasses-and-maple-rubbed version that reignited my bacon lust. And while I am a hopeless bacon fan-girl, I love Pine Street?s emulsified sausages as much or more. It?s the texture of the sausages that win my praise ? not too fine and free of gristle. My favorite flavors include roasted poblano with ancho chiles, traditional Italian and yeasty Wild Heaven, none overwhelming the natural porky goodness. ?JT

4A Pine Street, Avondale Estates, 404-296-9672. (Also available at several locations, including Dunwoody Green Market and Peachtree Road and Marietta Square farmers markets.)

The Spotted Trotter

The Spotted Trotter, which refers to itself as a boutique charcuterie house, offers a range of salumi, cured and smoked meats, p?t?s and terrines prepared with humanely raised, hormone-free meats. Local and organic spices are toasted and ground, chiles dried and spice packs created, all in-house. Owner Kevin Ouzts says he pays homage to Old World-style charcuterie while pushing the envelope to develop his own new American style. The Spotted Trotter is one of my first stops when entertaining. I pick up wet-brined coppa, nutty dried chorizo, beef bresaola smooth chicken liver p?t? and maybe a little veal mortadella. The shop also sells southern cheeses and H&F breads to complement charcuterie platters. ?JT

CHOCOLATE

La Chocolaterie (Becky Stein)

The Chocolaterie (Becky Stein)

The Chocolaterie

Way up in Cumming there?s a little gem of a chocolate boutique owned by husband-and-wife team Michael and Elizabeth Ashworth. Michael shelved his doctorate in computer science in favor of crafting more than 150 flavors of truffles for The Chocolaterie that run the gamut from red velvet to habanero (youch!). Each gorgeous truffle is hand-painted with chocolate (no candy coatings or confectioner?s glaze) and will have you transfixed, paralyzed by indecision. Does your apple pie truffle taste just like apple pie? That?s because it is. The Chocolaterie makes all of its own fillings, including the pies, cakes and candies contained within each glossy bite. While you?re at it, add a little fudge to your ever-expanding take-home box. One of the 30-40 varieties available daily will surely test your willpower. ?JT

410 Peachtree Pkwy, Cumming, 678-513-2700

Cacao Atlanta Chocolate Co.

Cacao now has three Atlanta locations, each with its own character but all looking like a stunning (but interactive) chocolate museum. You?ll feel compelled to speak quietly so as not to disturb the chocolate gods, who must grin widely at the quality of the bean-to-bar chocolate produced here. The boutique menu includes a slew of truffles, chocolate bark, chocolate covered salted caramels and sipping chocolate (don?t even get me started on the sipping chocolate with Aztec spices). But it?s in the Love bars that you can truly taste the nuances of the chocolate ? and the love. My favorite is the single-estate, single-varietal 75 percent cacao Pantanemo Love bar with the characteristic dark chocolate bite and smooth notes of caramel. ?JT

DAIRY

High Road Craft Ice Cream

High Road Craft Ice Cream (courtesy of High Road)

Atlanta Fresh Artisan Creamery

If you like Greek yogurt but find some of the commercial brands seem too much like sour cream ? pasty and chalky ? then search out this hometown treasure. This yogurt (both full- and reduced-fat varieties) offers a caressing creaminess that?s truly unique. The Tropical Sweet Heat, with pineapple, mango and a hint of chile pepper, is a standout. ?JK

(Available at several retail outlets, including Whole Foods.)

Decimal Place Farm

Some of our favorite goat?s milk cheese is produced on an 18-acre urban farm near Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. Farmer Mary Rigdon, a self-taught cheesemaker who pursued animal sciences at the University of Georgia, raises Saanen dairy goats and makes a range of goat?s milk cheeses. The chevre masters the delicate balance of tangy to creamy flavor and chalky to smooth texture. It also comes in a party-dip style garlic and dill or a lavender-fennel version. Look for flavored cheddars, one of which won the 2011 Goat Milk Cheese Competition last fall. ?JT

4314 Almach Ave., Conley, 404-363-0356. (Available at Peachtree Road, East Atlanta Village and Grant Park farmers markets.)

High Road Craft Ice Cream

In this day of increasingly ?inventive? ice cream flavors, the ice cream itself can be an afterthought. Create a quality product without any gimmicks, and you can distinguish yourself from the crowd. That?s High Road?s Valrhona chocolate ice cream. Concentrated chocolate and creaminess. Yet, that?s not to say High Road?s other small-batch-made ice creams like coffee and cream (my favorite) and peanut butter brittle won?t linger in your memory for lengthy stretches. Oh, did I mention the Aztec chocolate and caramel? And then there?s? ?JT

Izzy?s Cheese

Here?s a match made in stretchy cheese heaven. Mozzarella maker Antonio Lo Russo has teamed with Newborn dairy farmer Russell Johnston to turn fresh local milk into the city?s best mozzarella. The fior di latte cheese is gorgeous ? soft, with that gentle springiness that gives way to buttery waves of flavor. The creamery also makes an aged scamorza and a burrata. Look for wider distribution in coming months. ?JK

Orobianco

This artisanal mozzarella maker has just started to gear up. But if you can get your hands on its burrata, you?re in for bliss. This mozzarella filled with a tender stracciatella of cheese and cream is superlative. Cut it open and serve with nothing more than a drop or two of good olive oil or balsamic. Make sure to let it come to room temperature first to fully appreciate its buttery finish. ?JK

Batdorf & Bronson Coffee Roasters

Batdorf & Bronson, our own local coffee roaster, sources certified organic, fair-trade-certified and shade-grown coffees from farms around the world. The coffee is roasted in small batches at the company?s facility on Atlanta?s westside. Beans are roasted to each bean?s individual ?sweet spot,? highlighting its optimum flavor profile. The coffee is served at many of Atlanta?s upscale restaurants, including Miller Union, where I first discovered the intensely rich and chocolatey coffee. You can also find it at one of Batdorf & Bronson?s Dancing Goats Coffee Bar locations. ?JT

Steady Hand Pour House

The owners of this little spot in Emory Village have mastered the art of the pour over. Starting with beans from primo roaster Intelligensia, they prepare each cup by hand in a cone filter ? first letting the grounds bloom in a thin drizzle of hot water, then increasing the pour with a measured hand to get the desired extraction. If Ethiopian Debello is on the daily menu of bean varieties, don?t think about ordering anything else. ?JK

Octane Coffee

There are a lot of milky, frothy, cinnamon-dusted coffee drinks that call themselves cappuccino. But if you want a cappuccino done right ? 1/3 coffee, 1/3 steamed milk, 1/3 froth ? then go to Octane. It?s a drink to savor, one that coats your tongue in soft milkiness before the bitter insistence of the espresso cuts through. The Grant Park location offers the added bonus of great sweets and savories from the attached Little Tart Bakery. ?JK

DRY GOODS AND PASTA

Storico Fresco Pasta

Mike Patrick apprenticed all across Italy to assemble his most idiosyncratic collection of fresh pasta recipes. He has a special interest in the stuffed pastas of Lombardy, such as Pi Fasacc, an intricately folded dumpling filled with herbed taleggio and other cheeses, and Casonsei, a half-moon stuffed with a hot pink paste of beets and smoked cheese. He also makes a full line of fresh dried pastas, including memorable nutmeg-scented garganelli that will best any factory penne in your cupboard. He plans to open a Buckhead storefront where you can buy the pastas and snack on Roman street food. Can?t wait. ?JK

Sweet Georgia Grains

This small-batch granola company, based in Carrollton, sources organic ingredients locally when possible. It prepares seven different varieties of granola, including the Good Morning, Granola, which it calls ?the original hippie granola from the 1960s.? Our family favorite is the Heirloom Oatmeal Cookie granola. Based on a family oatmeal cookie recipe, this variety mixes it up with organic rolled oats, sunflower seeds, cinnamon, maple and Georgia pecans. Hey, kids, here?s your best chance at eating cookies for breakfast. ?JT

Atlanta Bee Company

Beekeepers from throughout northeast Georgia supply this packager with all-natural honey, free of additives and artificial preservatives. Varieties include Wildflower, Orange Blossom and Tupelo, but what we really love is the Sourwood honey. Its rich flavor and perfume are unlike any other honey we?ve tried. ?JK

(Available at local markets, farmers markets and festivals.)

Hope?s Gardens Pesto

The freshly made basil pesto from Atlanta-based Hope?s Gardens is one of my ultimate comfort foods. It?s a simple harmony of ingredients: rich olive oil, nutty Parmigiano-Reggiano, sharp raw garlic, earthy pine nuts and sweet licorice-scented basil. Hope?s Gardens also prepares pestos like the tangy (and nut-free) sun-dried tomato (great on baked fish), jalape?o-cilantro and the mint, green pea and almond pesto (vegan). What a great way to celebrate the season?s bounty. ?JT

Fairywood Thicket

Fairywood Thicket, local producer of jellies, jams and chutneys, took inspiration for its name from the wild elderberry bushes growing on its Fairburn farm. Eclectic jars hold products containing only fruit, pectin, sugar and spices. Nothing artificial, no corn syrup here. The product list began with elderberry jelly and has grown to include a number of savory jellies and chutneys like the scorching hot inferno jelly to a mild cranberry and serrano pepper jelly. Images of fairies frolicking in the thicket will dance in your head as you sample the vanilla blackberry, strawberry lavender and the white peach fruit jellies. ?JT

Phickles Pickles

Want a pickle with some pop? Try Phickles Pickles, an Athens-based pickled veggie company. Each jar of pickled local produce is hand-packed with vinegar, garlic, dill and peppers by owner Angie Tillman and company. Pickled snap beans will pucker you up, carrots pack some heat and the okra plays it just right ? smooth and crisp with a slow burn. Also look for pickled green tomatoes, jalape?os and asparagus. Anything can be crafted into a pickle, right? ?JT

Crystal Organic Farm

So many great local farms now supply Atlanta restaurants and farmers markets with game-changing farm produce. But you can?t help but award special recognition to this Newborn farm headed by Nicholas Donck. Donck?s weekly stand at the year-round Morningside Farmers Market tells you all you need to know about the growing seasons, the trends in fresh produce and the state of the good food movement. Here?s where you go to try your first padron peppers, new varieties of endive, sweet baby roma tomatoes and torpedo onions. You might find some of the bottles of wine and spirits on the shelves here cheaper by a dollar or three at your local liquor store. But you won?t find a better introduction to the contemporary cocktail scene. If you?re planning to build a home bar, this should be your first stop for bumping barware, bitters, mixers and craft spirits. We?re particularly smitten with the do-it-yourself cocktail kits for sale on the counter. ?JK

The owners focus on wines from Burgundy, the Rhone Valley and the Loire Valley in France, as well as Tuscany, Austria and Germany. Here?s where you can find that $12 Rhone red with real character, that $30 Burgundy that tastes like one that could fetch three times the price, and that really weird chardonnay from the Jura region of France. ?JK

Wild Heaven Craft Beers

After Paste publisher Nick Purdy found himself without a magazine to publish, he turned his attention from music to his other love ? beer. His microbrewery has caught on quickly, thanks to the distinctive character of his brews. His Ode To Mercy imperial brown ale, with its high alcohol content and touch of locally brewed coffee, is a hit with serious beer drinkers. All oils are tested both chemically and by professional tasters to ensure quality and claims of origin. The shop?s oils range in intensity from mild to robust and each are available for tasting. There?s a lot to love at this west Atlanta market, from the bakery to the house-made sausages and p?t?s to the well-curated selection of dry goods. But there?s something world-class about the cheese department, where Tim Gaddis offers a mouthwatering selection. Gaddis smartly features farmstead cheeses from around the world, around the country and around the South. The latter seems his real love; he knows and supports the farmers, bringing them recognition. ?JK

Be A Big Loser With These Weight Loss Tips | meizitang ...

Losing weight does not concern dieting until you have done it. It is a lifelong path towards better health and fitness. The key to keeping weight off after you lose it is a change in lifestyle. This article offers some useful tools and can help you to reach your weight loss goals.

Keep a food and exercise diet journal. If you track these things, you?re more likely to lose weight. Some people lose a lot more weight just because they pay attention more closely.

Educate yourself about MUFA foods in order to help yourself lose weight. MUFA stands for monounsaturated fatty acids. There are many nuts, oils and butters which are included in this food group. These foods have been proven to help you drop the pounds and provide you with huge health benefits. Don?t underestimate the effectiveness of MUFA foods when they are used for weight loss.

Use plates that are smaller. If you are accustomed to filling your plate at meals, a smaller plate will trick your eyes into thinking you have a full plate when you actually have much less food than normal. By using a salad plate, you can trick yourself into eating less.

Whenever you begin to feel doubt creeping in, it is important to alter your thinking right away. Without an optimistic mindset, it will be extremely difficult to stick with your program and enjoy the results. Create a positive affirmation to use as you start every day.

Keep your kitchen free of temptation. Just by making the simple choice to leave the junk food outside the home, you will not need to constantly face temptation. Keep plenty of healthy foods in your house. This way, when you?re hungry you will reach for a healthy snack. Cut up fresh fruits and veggies and keep them in the fridge, or have healthy crackers in your cupboard.

You should avoid the hype around diet pills and supplements that promise quick and effective results. While you may shed a few pounds initially, there is a good chance that you will gain it back as soon as you discontinue the product.

Your weight will naturally fluctuate. You want to think about the long term trend rather than obsessing about the day-to-day changes. Just keep in mind that as long as you are seeing a decrease over all, you are doing a fantastic job.

Some people might be surprised to learn that consuming fats can help to burn fats. All fats aren?t bad. Fatty acids, such as Omega 3 and 6, are not found in preservative foods located on your grocery store?s shelves. Yet, these fatty acids, which are found in fish and legumes, contribute to weight loss by nourishing the cardiovascular system and lowering cholesterol.

Opt for whipped butter. Certain individuals simply refuse to eliminated butter from their diet. Some people just like the taste of real butter. However, it does not have to be completely eliminated when you are dieting. Used whipped butter instead. Whipped butter contains half the calories of real butter.

Keeping a food diary is a great way to track and control how many calories you are consuming in a day. You should log every single thing you consume to find out where you are going wrong. A food journal is an excellent way to see if you are making any mistakes in your diet.

A really good way to help you lose weight is to run along the beach. It is tougher to run on sand than it is to run on grass.

You can lose weight by cleaning your house. You can lose fat by burning a lot of calories while doing housework. Listening to music while cleaning will make chores seem more fun. Break into a dance now and then to burn a few extra calories!

If you apply these tips to your weight loss journey, they can be a great help. Changing your lifestyle is key to successful weight loss. The advice written in this article will help you have a good understanding of the type of changes you need to make. The suggestions presented here can also help you in your efforts to maintain your weight loss.

Fitbit Zip

Fitness trackers, like the people they're meant for, come in plenty of shapes and sizes. The latest addition to this category of wearable devices that act essentially like pedometers, only smarter, is the petite Fitbit Zip.?Our Editors' Choice for fitness gadgets is the outstanding Fitbit Ultra, a sleek and compact device that provides a wealth of easy-to-understand information about your health. However, the company will soon retire the product and replacing it with two new options: the soon-to-be released Fitbit One, which is very similar to the Ultra except with modified look, and the tinier, lower-cost Fitbit Zip.

At $59.95 (direct), Fitbit Zip caters most to price-sensitive folks. No other good-quality fitness gadget I've seen comes in under $99, from the bracelet shaped Nike+ FuelBand ($149) to the boxy MP3-playing? Motorola MotoActv ($249.99) . If cost is your primary concern in choosing a fitness tracker, Fitbit Zip may be an ideal option.

However, given the mere $30 price difference between Zip and the new Fitbit One, I'd rather pony up for the latter. Fitbit Zip does an admirable job of counting steps taken and miles walked or run, but it lacks a few features that I think are worth the extra money. While I have not yet formally tested Fitbit One, I can safely say based on experience with Fitbit Ultra (and word from the company that functionality will be nearly identical) that the altimeter and sleep data you get with the more expensive gadget are extremely cool. Plus, Fitbit One, which I got some hands-on time with pre-release, has an even more attractive design than Ultra. The Zip, in comparison, looks a little cheap.

Design
When I say Fitbit Zip is tiny, I mean I've eaten pieces of candy bigger than this thing. It's 0.2 by 1.2 by 1.8 inches and weighs 0.3 ounces. Also included in the package are a color-coordinated rubbery case with clip, so that you can secure Fitbit Zip to your clothes, and a USB plug-in device that enables wireless syncing to your Fitbit account (more on that in the Set Up section).

This wireless activity tracker comes in five colors?white, black, lime, magenta, and blue. To me, the white and black look more sophisticated than the other sporty colors, so I opted for a white test unit.

In the center of the plastic body, a simple dot matrix display shows the time, how many steps you've walked (on a midnight-to-midnight cycle), total distance in miles, calories burned, and a happy face to reward you for staying fit. Compared with the slick Fitbit One, the Zip?s gray display looks downright schlocky.

Fitbit Zip has no buttons to press, instead relying on a simple tap to cycle through the information. The display goes to sleep when you?re not active to conserve battery power.

Set Up
Unlike most other fitness tracking devices that need to be connected by a cable to your computer and recharged every so often, Fitbit Zip is entirely wireless and runs on a watch battery, which you can replace when it dies, but should last several months.
Out of the box, you plug in the USB syncing connector into your computer, which initiates a download of the Fitbit software. You'll also see prompts to log into your Fitbit account, or create a new one if you need.

The Fitbit Web account is really the heart of the program, and it works with a number of other apps, such as Lose It! and MapMyRun, as well as physical devices for health and fitness, including the Fitbit Aria Wi-Fi Smart Scale, which automatically logs your weigh-ins to the account to track your weight effortlessly.

For all the Fitbit components to work properly, you do need to enter into the Web account your height, weight, age, and sex. All that information stays private.

With a Fitbit account set up, you can clip Fitbit Zip to your clothes or tuck it in your pocket, and go about your normal day. When you're in range of your computer with the USB stick, all your data will wirelessly upload to your Fitbit account.

Web Account Features
Fitbit Zip will keep track of the ground you cover every day, but it won't count stairs or hills that you climb any differently, as the Fitbit Ultra and One do (climbing stairs burns about four times as many calories as walking on flat surface). All this activity is uploaded to your account, where you can view intuitive graphs of your progress.

You can set up goals, like losing weight or simply taking more steps in a day, and Fitbit will keep an eye on your progress.

The Web account is comprehensive. You can manage your calorie intake by logging foods and drinks you consume, and also entering special activities in addition to walking to ensure you get credit for burning more calories. For example, if you swam three-quarters of a mile in 35 minutes while not wearing the Fitbit Zip?which is water- and sweat-resistant, but can't be worn in a pool?the Web account will computer how many additional calories you burned. Fitbit Zip only tracks walking, jogging, and running, but that's true of nearly every fitness tracker I've seen.

A journal section also appears in your account for keeping notes, as well as areas for monitoring sleep, blood pressure, and glucose if you have the appropriate devices or want to manually enter information.

The Fitbit Ultra and its successor the Fitbit One include automatic sleep tracking data, which I really enjoy seeing, but this capability didn't make it into the lower-cost Fitbit Zip.?

Should You Zip?
Miniscule, yet effective, Fitbit Zip certainly does meet the needs of anyone looking for a good quality fitness tracker at an affordable price. But seeing as you only have to shell out an extra $30 for the upcoming Fitbit One, which will replace Fitbit Ultra (our Editors' Choice), the added cost seems worth it. Fitbit Zip doesn't look as sharp as the Fitbit One, nor does it track your sleep or give you credit for additional calories burned when you climb stairs. And with any of the Fitbit devices, you get the same great Web account for free. The Fitbit Zip might make sense if you're unsure of your commitment to using a fitness tracker in the first place, but for everyone else, I recommend spending just a little more for the Fitbit One.?

3-D images of 300-million-year-old insects revealed

ScienceDaily (Sep. 25, 2012) ? Stunning 3-D images of 300-million-year-old insects have been revealed for the first time by University of Manchester researchers.

Writing in the journal PLOS ONE, the scientists have used a high resolution form of CT scanning to reconstruct two 305-million-year-old juvenile insects. Without the pioneering approach to imaging, these tiny insects -- which are three-dimensional holes in a rock -- would have been impossible to study.

By placing the fossils in a CT scanner, and taking over 3,000 X-rays from different angles, the scientists were able to create 2,000 slices showing the fossil in cross section.

From these slices the researchers created 3D digital reconstructions of the fossils. This process allows them to learn more about the lifestyle, biology and diet of the insects, one of which is similar to a modern day cockroach, and glimpse fascinating insights about how both were adapted for survival.

One of the insects reconstructed by the scientists is characterised by a large number of sharp spines. It is a new species and genus which does not exist today.

The other is an early predecessor of one of the great survivors of the insect world, the cockroach, and is one of the best preserved examples of this age ever seen by insect palaeontologists. Researchers suspect from its well preserved mouthparts that it survived by eating rotting litter from the forest floor.

Both are members of a group called the Polyneoptera -- which includes roaches, mantises, crickets, grasshoppers and earwigs. But analysing the exact relationships of the insects will be difficult for the researchers, led by Dr Russell Garwood of the University of Manchester's School of Materials, as insects have a habit of dramatically changing appearance as they develop.

Dr Garwood said: "The most dramatic change is seen in insects like butterflies, which change from a larva, to chrysalis, to adult. But relatively few people look to the fossils try and work out how such a life cycle may have evolved.

"We are hoping that work like this will allow us to better understand the biology and development of these early insects, and how major innovations may have come about.

"Around this time a number of early 'amphibians' were insectivores -- they lived by eating a lot of insects. The spiney creature was a sitting duck, as it couldn't fly, so the spines probably made it less palatable. It is bizarre -- as far as we're aware, quite unlike any members of the Polyneoptera alive today."

"The roach nymph is much like modern day cockroaches -- although it isn't a 'true' cockroach, as it may well predate the split between true cockroaches and their sister group, the mantises."

"This is very much a first step, and I'll be spending the next few years looking at other fossil insects to build on this work.

Professor Philip Withers, co-author on the paper, added: "I am very excited by our fossil work which is providing unique information in 3D."

Voters say Obama ads are more honest, but expect both sides to lie

In an election season that has produced reels of negative ads and dizzying spin, more Americans find that President Barack Obama's ads remain honest, giving his campaign a 12-point lead over that of his Republican opponent, Mitt Romney, according to the Yahoo!/Esquire poll.

Many Americans appear to agree with Romney pollster Neil Newhouse's statement that "We're not going to let our campaign be dictated by fact-checkers," though perhaps not in the way the Romney campaign would like. Among the general population, 42 percent found that the president's ads stick to the truth, while only 30 percent said the same about Romney's campaign ads.

As for which side's ads contained outright lies, Americans view Romney and Obama as neck and neck. The margin of error for the survey, conducted shortly after the two national political conventions, is plus or minus 4 percentage points.

42 says Obama's ads are truthful; 30 percent say so about Romney's ads.

But the sad truth is that two-thirds of Americans fully expect politicians to lie, as a rule of thumb. Most who hold that expectation are bothered by it.

In his interview with 60 Minutes Sunday evening, Romney complained that the President and his supporters distort the facts to fit their narrative. But 60 percent of those surveyed found that Romney's refrain?that President Obama has "failed" America in his first term?is too harsh an appraisal, with only 36 percent calling it a justified claim.

The poll was conducted among a random national sample of 1,002 adults from Sept. 7 to Sept. 10. The respondents were contacted by landline and cellular telephone. View the full results (pdf).

Are You Ready To Mow? | Fulton Tea Party Home Improvement And ...

To make sure your grass is a cut above your neighbor?s, it?s important not to let your riding mower and other power equipment get you hot under the collar because they?re not ready to mow when you are.

That?s why it?s a good idea when you create your ?to-do? list to have a check box that reads: Maintain Outdoor Power Equipment. This task is not only essential for the safety and performance of the equipment, but also helps keep your yard healthy and free of disease throughout the summer.

Are You Feeling Handy?

You can do a lot of the basic maintenance on your outdoor lawn equipment yourself in just a couple hours. Some steps to follow include:

? Change and dispose of oil; replace filter

? Check and replace worn spark plugs

? Brush grass clippings away from cooling fans, air intake screens and under mower deck

? Inspect air filter

? Sharpen blade

Prefer Soil Rather Than Oil?

Use a ?hassle-free? mobile service.

Not everyone likes or is able to perform their own maintenance. Similar to a doctor?s house call, there are mobile services available to deliver the service center to your doorstep. For example, John Deere offers Ready To Mow?, whereby one of their factory-trained technicians comes to your home or work with a service center on wheels to perform a 12-point maintenance & inspection service on all outdoor power equipment. A few steps involved with this service include:

? Check battery voltage and continuity

? Clean engine

? Inspect belts for wear and adjust tension

? Check tire tread and pressure

? Test operation of brakes, carburetor, transmission and safety systems

? Change transmission fluid, engine coolant, oil and filters (certain models)

? Grease axle and mower spindles

? Sharpen blades, check balance and straightness to prevent vibration.

Don?t let the grass grow under your feet before you perform some basic maintenance on your outdoor power equipment.
