Stress relief

There are plenty of techniques that will help us cope with stress. Some goes to their respective doctors and asks for medicines that gives temporary relief to their anxiety or regulate blood pressure. Some would resort to meditation and relaxation techniques to keep their mind in harmony using aromatherapy or music therapy to help them along.

Sweat it out

The most advisable tip for stress management is through physical exercise. Sweating it out with by doing something strenuous proves to be more beneficial than taking in drugs or vitamins that might have some side effects on your system.

Most therapist and stress management experts would agree that physical exercise is considered as the best stress reliever during this time and age. Aside from changing your focus from your problems to something productive, physical exercise will help your body function at peak efficiency.

Benefits of physical exercise to your body

Since physical exercise involves a lot of body movements, this will improve your cardiovascular functions and greatly strengthens your heart ? this will practically free you from possible effects of stress like heart failure, stroke, high-blood pressure, and so on.

When your heart is attuned to the exercise regime, blood circulation will also improve which in turn increases oxygen throughout the body. Your cholesterol level and other harmful bio-chemicals will be reduced and will lessen the chance of your body breaking down due to the negative effect of these substances.

Physical exercise also helps you mentally aside from keeping your body in perfect shape. Indulging in various forms of physical exercise will provide an outlet to stress-related emotions such as anger, fear, frustration, depression and irritability. Since exercise improves the circulation of chemicals to your body and brain, hormones that elevates certain responses to your body will be reduces as well; keeping you relaxed and in control.

Tips in setting up an exercise program

Now that you know the positive benefits of physical exercise to your mind and body, all you need to learn is how to set up an exercise program that will not hinder your career or social life.

It is recommended by experts that a person should have a regular exercise 3 to 5 times a week, for at least an hour every session; try to budget your time to include a healthy dose of exercise. Wake up extra early in the morning to jog around the block, or do some stretching in your own backyard. The fresh air will compliment your physical exercise since the fresh oxygen you breathe in would be healthy to your body.

A visit to your local bookstore, gym and stress management seminar may prove to be a treasure of information on different kinds of exercise you can do to take away your stress.

Give yourself a break and start taking care of your body before it breaks down ? if it does, then you?re in big trouble. Avoid it!

Records keep tumbling for championsip-bound Vettel | The ...

The records continued to tumble for Sebastian Vettel at the Singapore Grand Prix, even if the Red Bull driver left the city-state without the prize he wanted most: the 2011 Formula One world championship.

Not that the German will have to wait long. He needs just one point over the final five races, or have nearest rival Jenson Button to fail to win just one of them. Given that Vettel has not finished below fourth in any race this season, it seems certain he will become the sport's youngest two-title winner at the next race, the Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka on Oct. 9.

Vettel put in another faultless performance in Singapore, taking his 11th pole position of the season and was never overtaken in the race en route to the checkered flag. Button's second position prevented Vettel taking the title under the Marina Bay lights.

The German is only the sixth driver in history to take 11 poles in a season. His victory also moved him out of a tie with Kimi Raikkonen on the all-time list and put him one behind another Finn, Mika Hakkinen, who is 12th on the career list.

The Red Bull driver claimed he was concentrating throughout the race on the immediate contest rather than calculating whether he had clinched the championship. Now, with only one point needed in five races, he won't need much mathematical prowess to figure it out.

"Crossing the line, I didn't know if it was enough or not," Vettel said. "For the next race, I am smart enough to work it out myself.

"With the races we have had so far, it (winning the title) should not be a problem."

Button made the race interesting, slicing into Vettel's lead to get within 3.7 seconds with three laps to go, but was frustrated by cars at the back of the pack in the closing stages and could get no closer.

Button's McLaren teammate Lewis Hamilton ? who finished fifth ? had an unhappier time, getting slapped with a drive-through penalty after colliding with the Ferrari of Felipe Massa.

That incident prompted a confrontation in the media interview area after the race, when Massa tried to speak to Hamilton about the crash, but was ignored by the Briton. Hamilton also refused to speak to reporters.

It was the second time the pair have tangled this season ? the first came in Monaco ? and Sunday's collision brought to the surface some of the ill will that appears to have lingered since Hamilton beat Massa to the 2008 title by the slimmest of margins.

"He is not learning," Massa said. "I called him two times, but he didn't listen to me, he (walked) past me. He didn't even look to me."

It was the latest in a series of crashes involving Hamilton this year ? including a collision with his teammate Button in Canada ? which had many questioning his brilliant but aggressive approach.

McLaren team boss Martin Whitmarsh acknowledged Hamilton was frustrated at not being part of the title calculations this year but still defended his driver's style.

"Lewis has got to try and get better as a race driver, but he drove from very difficult circumstances, five times through the pit lane to score valuable points, and get a strong fifth place like that, it was a great drive," Whitmarsh said.

"Lewis is still a young guy, he is learning and he will learn from all of this. He will win races and I am sure he is going to win more championships."

McLaren and Ferrari are now in planning mode for the 2012 season. Ferrari's Alonso finished a distant fourth in Singapore, having being passed twice in the race by Red Bull's Mark Webber, who finished third.

Mercedes too had a disappointing race, though it was to be expected that the long wheelbase car would struggle on the narrow confines of the Singapore street circuit.

Mercedes driver Michael Schumacher, a seven-time world champion, crashed out of the race in spectacular style just before the midpoint, clipping Sergio Perez's rear tire and being launched into a track barrier.

Schumacher was reprimanded by the stewards over the move, though he claimed it was a simple racing incident, being caught out by Perez braking sooner than he had anticipated.

"Basically he just lifted off too early and I couldn't anticipate it," Schumacher said. "I was about to try and go on the inside as he was a lot slower than myself. Unfortunately, we had a misunderstanding. It was a shame."

Force India rookie Paul di Resta was sixth in his best finish. Mercedes' Nico Rosberg was seventh, ahead of Force India's Adrian Sutil. Massa recovered from the Hamilton crash ? which caused a rear tire puncture ? to finish ninth and Perez was 10th.

Dotcom-Monitor, a leading web site monitoring company, announced a new monitoring service today that assists corporations in the video streaming market and increases the stability and effectiveness of their video content services. This video stream monitoring service directly impacts the video streaming market that was worth an estimated $600 million in 2006 as reported by Research and Markets, a market research group based in Ireland. Most companies that provide video on their websites require their streaming content to be available 24/7 to attract visitors, serve advertisements, and provide informational or instructional materials. Competing in the Internet?s world market necessitates the highest quality with minimal interruption of streams. Dotcom-Monitor assists corporations in maintaining an edge over their competition through Quality of Service (QoS) assurance.

website monitoring

Simple and Comprehensive Media Monitoring

Application of Dotcom-Monitor?s services is nearly effortless. Corporations provide the URL and specifications of their streaming content, and Dotcom-Monitor consistently ascertains its performance. Businesses specify the parameters for notification, such as connection timeout in seconds, acceptable buffering time, and expected bps (bits per second) rate. This information is entered into a sophisticated monitoring system, and then the specified site is monitored from 12 strategically located worldwide stations.

Monitoring Streaming Content

Sites that provide numerous pages of streaming content will benefit most from the addition of real-time video stream functionality to Dotcom-Monitor?s service package. The monitoring service is especially beneficial to sites with a tremendous amount of content that is difficult to monitor. Dotcom-Monitor?s service, however, can make this task seamless. Dotcom-Monitor keeps track of multiple performance metrics, such as Connection time, Buffering Time, Received Packages, Buffering Packages, Frame Rate and Average Bytes per Second. By analyzing those metrics one can determine quality of the service over periods of time and if necessary make needed adjustments/

Entire Suite of Services

Video monitoring is just one facet of the complete services package provided by Dotcom-Monitor. Its success is a direct result of its comprehensive and sophisticated systems and analytical capabilities. Rather than a typical connectivity test, Dotcom-Monitor?s services produce an environment of dependable website QoS, which is a critical component for a successful online business.

Even if a site?s appearance and performance appear to be acceptable from one browser, access may be difficult elsewhere. Dotcom-Monitor uses 12 monitoring stations around the world to ensure that access to a site is not impeded from any location.

By subscribing to Dotcom-Monitor?s services, corporations can feel confident that their online infrastructure is up and running, no matter where the site is accessed. Corporations that are alerted to problems will use their own resources to solve identified issues, but they will be able to address complications immediately and directly. Extensive reporting in real time, using easy-to-understand graphical charts that describe performance and variations, will offer a further advantage.

Instant Notification

Dotcom-Monitor?s services enable clients to choose not only a preferable means of notification but also the appropriate people in the corporation to alert, notifying them by telephone, pager, or email when there is any degradation of streaming content or any other site issue. Alerts are issued immediately, so that problem solving can commence as quickly as possible. Dotcom-Monitor acts as an insurance policy on the uptime and performance of critical media content, an assurance that most companies cannot afford to go without. Any business that relies on the Internet and must validate QoS and Service Level Agreement requirements can do so easily and inexpensively by implementing the tools offered by Dotcom-Monitor.

The web carries great expectation, be it from the users who search for specifics or the websites which provide to what the users need. So there is a common objective that everyone is trying to meet. The web is a powerful medium to outperform yourself and your business, but only if done in the right way. Frequent monitoring and analysis is much required for your website to perform well on the web as there is immense competition everyday. The room for error is very limited in the web 2.0 world. There are softwares as a service to help design and provide an effective and fast way to keep a check on your website availability. These services not only monitor your websites, they also monitor your servers and also performs web application monitoring.

cloud monitoring
With website monitoring services, you can have the advantage. Factors like accessibility, reliablility and credibility are of greatest importance to businesses, with downtime and slow response times affecting websites and inturn businesses, all the above criterias will be hard to satisfy. Users simply abandon slow web sites which show a delay in downloading the webpage or other page components which is for the users ex: web applications. Productivity of web applications and other site components can be increased. Detailed statistical data on website availability (& monitoring)and response times can be pin pointed and tracked down till the last detail. With focus to business and its very existance and to perform well with competitors, it is necessary to have web monitoring as a service to keep a check on our websites.

Thorne Retirement Home Resident Turns 101 | The Dillon Herald

By Carley Wiggins
Over the past eight years I have written about a lot of people. People from all walks of life, some who have done some pretty outstanding things in their life and some just average people. But as I have mentioned several times, everybody has a story to tell and this is the story of Carrie Johnson. Carrie was born in Johnston County, N.C., the daughter of James and Addie Wilkerson Lane. There were seven children in the family, four boys and three girls.
I guess the unusual thing about Carrie is her birth date, September 16, 1910. Friday was Carrie?s birthday; she was a hundred and one years old. Carrie did not come from wealth and one might consider she has not enjoyed fame and fortune, but she seems to have enjoyed her life even though it has not been an easy life. Her mother passed away when she was just a young child, which made things even harder on the Lane family.
About 1920, the family moved to South Carolina and settled near Mullins. Her father was a farmer and the whole family worked to raise the crops by which they made a living. She talked about life before the modern conveniences that we enjoy today and the days when there were few paved roads to travel on. Most travel was by horse and wagon. She remembered them having a 1923 automobile of some type. Carrie of course has outlived all her brothers and sisters.
In 1927, Carrie Lane married J.C. Johnson, who was also a farmer and from this marriage came six children, five of whom are still living. This marriage lasted forty-eight years until her husband passed away in 1975. In the midst of raising six children, Carrie began to work outside the home in order to supplement their income. She worked at various jobs including twenty-two years at Herbert Mills which became known as Heritage Sportswear. From there she went to Glenn Sportswear, owned by the same family, and worked until her retirement at age sixty-five.
One might think that Mrs. Johnson went home and sat down and didn?t do much of anything, but that was far from the truth. Mrs. Carrie as she is called by many contributes her long life to staying active. Her daughter, Dean who was there as I interviewed her mother, said her mother was always busy doing something. She grew a nice vegetable garden each year. She enjoyed working in her flowers and loves growing red roses. After her husband?s death, Mrs. Carrie lived alone and did her own work around her home until last year when she was a hundred years old. She said she had lived a fairly healthy life during her time, she had some heart surgery a few years back and she only has one kidney, but otherwise has been pretty healthy.
She shared with me some things about her life such as doing about everything on the farm, even driving a tractor. She still has a driver?s license although she doesn?t drive much anymore. She talked about her first trip to the beach many years ago when all they had was a bath house. I asked if she had any hobbies and she said she loved to fish. She said she had fished in the rivers and the ocean; she had a brother who used to take her fishing a lot.
Last year, tragedy struck in Mrs. Carrie?s life when she lost a daughter, Carrie Johnson Howard after a bout with cancer. This seemed to take a toll on this dear lady, one that she hasn?t seemed to overcome. Since last October, Mrs. Carrie has been a resident of Thorne Retirement Home in Lake View. You wouldn?t recognize her as being a patient, she gets around good, she is completely self sufficient and the age is almost unbelievable.
Mrs. Johnson is a member of North Mullins Baptist Church and she misses her friends there. Some of her children live away, but a big day is planned for Sunday when they all will be home to honor their mother for her hundred and one birthday. Mrs. Johnson has nineteen grandchildren, thirty-six great-grandchildren, and twenty great-great-grandchildren.
Before we departed company, I asked Mrs. Carrie what she would like to do with the rest of her life, however long that might be. She answered and said ?I would just like to be able to go back to my home.? That is certainly not for me to be the judge of, because I don?t know all her circumstances, but as so many others that I have had the privilege of writing about, I will not soon forget Mrs. Carrie Johnson.

Colon Cancer: Are You At Risk?

Colon cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers for both men and women in the Untied States. It is important that you understand your risk for developing this disease, as well as lifestyle changes you can make now to reduce your chances of falling victim to colon cancer.

Cancer of the large intestine, or colon, typically begins as small clumps of cells called adenomatous polyps. Often, these small polyps form in your colon and produce few, if any, symptoms. If they are not removed, they may eventually become cancerous. This is why physicians recommend routine screening to identify and remove polyps before they become a problem.

One of the best ways to prevent death from colon cancer is to have regular screenings. Because more than 90% of all colorectal cancers are found in people who are 50 and older, the American Cancer Society recommends that you start getting routine colon screenings at age 50. If you have a family history of this disease, your physician may recommend that you start screening earlier.

Three of the most common screenings for colon cancer include a stool test, flexible sigmoidoscopy, and colonoscopy. Your physician will make recommendations for how often you should have these tests administered.

Aside from age, there are some other risk factors that may make you more susceptible to developing colon cancer. Some of these factors include:

?

  • Race
  • African-Americans have a higher risk for developing this disease than people of other races
  • Family history
  • Parents, siblings, and children of a person diagnosed with colon cancer are at a higher risk than the average person of developing the disease themselves.
  • Personal history of polyps or cancer
  • Inflammatory intestinal conditions
  • Two of the most common conditions are ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease
  • High fat, low fiber diet
  • Obesity
  • Sedentary lifestyle
  • Diabetes
  • Smoking
  • Heavy use of alcohol

?

While some of these risk factors, like race and age, cannot be changed, there are some lifestyle alterations that you can make to reduce your chance of developing this type of cancer. Keep in mind that just because you have one or more of these risks, it does not mean you will develop colon cancer. You should talk with your physician about these risk factors so that he or she can provide adequate screening and give you suggestions for a healthy lifestyle.

Many people exhibit few, if any, symptoms of colon cancer in the early stages of the disease. As it progresses, patients may notice unexplained weight loss, persistent abdominal discomfort, a change in their bowel habits, rectal bleeding, blood in their stool, weakness, or excessive fatigue. The only way to truly know if you have colon cancer is through screenings and tests administered by your physician.

?big idea?
Jessica M. Talavera (Maryland)
This is a excellent idea for pumping mothers. It takes very little space in your refrigerator or freezer. The bottles hooked right into my pump. ?bright idea? Jill
L. Gentner
(Allen Park, MI)
I was so tired of trying to keep track of the milk bottle was the oldest when it comes to feeding our son. When I work, this product helped me keep tract of the milk was the eldest and had to be used for the first time without having to write a date on each bottle. In addition, the storage rack fits nicely in the fridge without having a lot of space. The bottles have not been filtered, I was skeptical given that was on their side. I loved the perfection which he attributed to my Medela breast pump. I have recommended this product to all friends of my chest . ?Great for organizing the freezer?
K. Ganci (Clay, NY)
This is a great item to organize the freezer for the breastfeeding / pumping. It is also perfect if you have a baby in the nursery, since you can just grab the bottle and go. Her nipples fit the bottles so it really was a breeze. This is the second purchase I have made of these because the first set, broke several bottles. That?s the only negative thing about them. Pandora gets a facelift, goes unlimited for free streaming music (Yahoo! News)

The music streaming site just got a complete overhaul and a set of social features

Music lovers may be awash in a sea of tune-streaming services at the moment, but Pandora persists as a perennial favorite, especially when it comes to discovering new music. The site, which lets you curate your own custom radio stations, has long been one of the most prominent web music services around ? but it was admittedly in need of a facelift.

Pandora

Not only did Pandora just launch as cosmetic redesign of its web music portal, but it also lifted the restrictions on how many hours of streaming sonic goodness you can devour each month. Previously, listeners could only enjoy 40 hours of free, ad-supported music each cycle, so if you like to maintain a constant flow of background music, you probably found yourself in the lurch from time to time.

Beyond the freedom of an all-you-can-stream model, Pandora's website is now built on HTML5 (which has powered some pretty neat browser-based sonic experiments)?rather than Flash. While that sounds a bit on the technical side, you'll notice the change in speed immediately. Not only does the site load faster, but it offers a more fluid, dynamic design that's far more intuitive than its comparatively clunky predecessor. That speed will come in handy for Pandora's new emphasis on social sharing: you can now share a song or a station to Facebook or Twitter, or just track your favorite tracks within Pandora's new social music feed on your profile.

With the advent of Spotify, many streaming services are scrambling to?stay appealing to web music lovers. While Pandora takes a decidedly more browser-centric approach that distinguishes it from our latest, greatest European import, it still has sites like Rdio, MOG, and Last.fm to contend with. While it's difficult to predict how all of these competing services will fare in a post-Spotify music scene, Pandora's new design is a breath of fresh air for anyone loyal to the service ? and perhaps enough to bring back anyone who's strayed.

Oil mats after BP spill pose long-term ecosystem threat: study (Reuters)

MOBILE, Alabama (Reuters) ? Auburn University researchers said oil mats submerged in the seabed more than a year after the biggest oil spill in U.S. history pose long-term threats to coastal ecosystems across the northern Gulf of Mexico.

The study, released on Tuesday by the school's engineering department, showed that tarballs churned to the surface by Tropical Storm Lee and deposited along Alabama beaches this month had "essentially identical" chemical composition as samples taken from mats after the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

"Our interpretation of these observations is that submerged tar mats buried offshore of this coastline are breaking apart to yield these tar balls," the study reads, estimating the tarballs in question contained about 17 percent oil by mass.

The civil engineering study -- conducted prior to, during and after the tropical storm's landfall on Alabama beaches -- indicated the spill's remnants remained largely unchanged 17 months after the Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded and sank off the coast of Louisiana.

The data directly linked the recently deposited tarballs to the 2010 event that resulted in more than 200 million gallons of oil spewing into the Gulf of Mexico from BP PLC's Macondo well.

"The data question the validity of the widely held belief that submerged oil from the Deepwater Horizon accident is substantially weathered and thus depleted of most polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons," the study said.

"Also, it supports the hypothesis that submerged oil may continue to pose some level of long-term risk to nearshore ecosystems," it said.

The study added that the tropical storm had demonstrated the "potential for remobilization" by similar storm events in the future but said the magnitude of such events could not be anticipated with any level certainty.

BP spokesman Scott Dean said the Auburn research has not had any immediate impact on the oil company's ongoing response to the spill.

"We're looking at the study, but it doesn't change our commitment to the response," Dean said. "We'll continue to have crews out collecting tarballs as the reports come in."

Specifically, BP dispatched Shoreline Cleanup Assessment Technique teams to the affected areas following Tropical Storm Lee and provided additional manual cleanup personnel to "augment existing cleanup operations.

The SCAT teams consist of an environmental lead, a safety lead and representatives from the U.S. Coast Guard, Alabama Department of Environmental Management and BP.

Palestinians to seek UN membership (AP)

UNITED NATIONS ? Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is pressing ahead Tuesday with his diplomatic campaign to gain full U.N. membership, as the divisive issue of Palestinian statehood takes center stage ahead of the opening of the U.N. General Assembly session.

Abbas had meetings scheduled with French President Nicolas Sarkozy and Lebanese President Michel Suleiman, among leaders, as he sought to line up support ahead of his speech Friday to the General Assembly when the Palestinians vow to submit a letter formally requesting U.N. membership.

Envoys of the Quartet of Mideast mediators ? the U.S., the U.N., the European Union and Russia ? planned to meet again Tuesday in an effort to avert a showdown over Palestinian statehood by crafting a way forward that would be enough to persuade the Palestinians to drop their bid and have enough caveats for Israel to get its support.

French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe, in New York Tuesday for high-level meetings, told Europe-1 radio in Paris that his country is still working to get Mideast peace talks restarted before the United Nations faces a decision over whether to recognize a Palestinian state. "The status quo is untenable," Juppe said. "The only way to settle the Israeli-Palestinian problem is direct negotiations."

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, meanwhile, told Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in a Sept. 17 letter circulated Tuesday that his country backs the push for Palestinian statehood, and that recognizing it would be "an act of historic justice."

As the Palestinians edged closer to seeking statehood recognition from the United Nations, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called for Abbas to meet with him in New York. The Israel leader said he wanted to resume peace talks, upping the pressure on Abbas and building on the frenzied diplomacy swirling around the Palestinians' bid.

While any submission by the Palestinians wait weeks or months for the U.N. action, it has Mideast mediators scrambling to find a way to draw the two sides back to a negotiating table.

Regardless, Abbas said he had not been swayed by what he called "tremendous pressure" to drop the bid for U.N. recognition and instead to resume peace talks with Israel. Senior aides to the Palestinian leader said Abbas was undaunted by threats of punitive measures.

"Abbas says to every one: it's enough, 20 years of negotiations are more than enough, the world should intervene and end the Israeli occupation as long as the USA can't," said Mohammed Ishtayeh, an Abbas aide.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said, however, there was still time to find a solution to the diplomatic crisis.

Clinton told reporters in New York that the U.S. is talking with all sides to defuse the standoff, noting that there were still several days to seek a compromise before Abbas' speech.

She joined Netanyahu in calling for new talks and repeated the U.S. position that the only path to a separate state for Palestinians is through negotiations with Israel.

Nabil Shaath, senior aide to Abbas, told The Associated Press that the Palestinian leader informed U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon during their meeting Monday that he would present him with a letter requesting full membership on Friday, ahead of Abbas' speech to the General Assembly.

Any candidate for U.N. membership must submit a letter to the secretary-general stating it is a "peace-loving" state and accepts the U.N. Charter. Ban is expected to examine the Palestinian letter and then send it to the 15-member U.N. Security Council, which must give its approval before a vote in the larger General Assembly.

Ishtayeh said the letter will state: "Palestine is a peace-loving state and has contributed to human civilization, that it has succeeded in building state institutions." It would also cite the need to consider the pre-1967 Mideast War borders as those of the Palestinian state, he said.

Although any submission by the Palestinians could wait weeks or months for U.N. action, it has sparked a flurry of diplomatic activity with Mideast mediators scrambling to find a way to draw the sides back to the negotiating table.

Shaath said last ditch efforts to dissuade the Palestinian president from approaching the Security Council had failed. He said Palestinians had been threatened with harsh punitive measures but had decided to move ahead nonetheless.

The comment appeared to refer to the warnings by some in the U.S. Congress that current and future financial aid to the Palestinian Authority could be in jeopardy if they move ahead with the membership bid. The U.S. gives some $500 million a year in aid to the Palestinians.

Israel has not said how it would respond to a Palestinian declaration of independence, though hardliners in Netanyahu's government have called for a variety of measures, including annexing the West Bank or withholding tax funds that Israel collects on behalf of the Palestinians.

Israeli government spokesman Mark Regev said that by going to the U.N., the Palestinians are violating "the spirit and the word of signed commitments" that pledged to resolve disagreements through negotiations. "Israel reserves the right to respond," he said Tuesday, refusing to elaborate.

Each side in on-again-off-again Israeli-Palestinian talks has accused the other of being an untrustworthy and intransigent participant in the peace process.

In a statement issued late Monday, Netanyahu called on Abbas to begin "direct negotiations in New York and continue them in Jerusalem and Ramallah." It provided no other details or indications that Netanyahu was willing to cede to any of the Palestinians' demands.

Ban "reiterated his support for the two-state solution and stressed his desire to ensure that the international community and the two parties can find a way forward for resuming negotiations within a legitimate and balanced framework," U.N. spokesman Martin Nesirky said after the secretary-general met with Abbas.

The comment underscored the desires of some members of the Quartet of Mideast mediators that Palestinian statehood should not be granted before a resumption of peace talks. While the four international mediators have repeatedly called for renewed negotiations, Russia supports U.N. membership for Palestine.

The long-stalled negotiations have been unable to solve key issues including Israeli settlement building in the West Bank and the status of east Jerusalem, which the Palestinians want as their capital. Israel captured both areas in the 1967 Mideast war.

Clinton and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov agreed at a Monday night meeting that the Quartet envoys should meet again for the third straight day on Tuesday, officials said.

A U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive diplomatic work, said progress was being made on a joint Quartet statement that would include a modest upgrade to Palestinian status at the U.N., address Israel's demand that it be recognized as a Jewish state, and set a broad timeline for renewed negotiations.

The timeframe wouldn't be a deadline, as such, but would be aimed at addressing the Palestinian desire to see quick action. The offer would come with an unchanged message that Washington would veto the Palestinian bid at the Security Council for U.N. membership, but at the very least it would represent a dignity-saving compromise for Abbas' U.S.-backed government.

By already promising a veto in the Security Council, the U.S. has blocked that course for the Palestinians before they even submit the request.

Alternatively, the Palestinians could seek the approval of a majority of the General Assembly's 193 member states to upgrade their status from a permanent observer to a nonmember observer state ? a designation that would leave them with a symbolic victory despite years of failed negotiations and waning hopes for statehood.

In either scenario, the Palestinians will have shown they have the power to force action on the issue at a time when Israel is feeling increasingly isolated in the region.

Five Favorite Films With Taylor Lautner

Not too many actors get to headline an action thriller while still in their teens, but then career trajectories can be a little different when you're an alumnus of a certain billion-dollar vampire franchise. Still just 19, Taylor Lautner was always the most likely of the Twilight triangle to embrace the action genre: his chiseled physique and Cruise-junior profile suggest a screen life of tangling with bad guys, which is precisely what he does in director John Singleton's Bourne-like paranoid escapade, Abduction . (Also useful action credentials: Googling "Taylor Lautner Abduction" yields as many or more hits for "Taylor Lautner abs" -- let no one say we don't do our hard research here.) In the film, Lautner plays a high school student who discovers his entire life has been fabricated -- and swiftly finds himself on the run from various sinister agencies out to use him as the bait in their game of espionage. Hey, it's not that far-fetched when you consider his previous job involved shape-shifting into a wolf.

With Abduction in theaters this week, we had the chance to chat with the personable Lautner about working on the film, where he sees his career heading, and his experience living inside the crazy celebrity bubble of the Twilight series. But first, he talked about his five favorite films. Take it away, Team Jacob.

My all time, classic favorites come down to Gladiator and Braveheart. Those are definitely my top two. Braveheart might even get the edge. I've seen those movies so many times. I've probably seen Braveheart like 10 or 15 times. It's just, it's classic; Mel is amazing in it -- and I believe he directed it as well, right? Braveheart is absolutely unbelievable, and the ending of that movie is the best part.

Gladiator (Ridley Scott, 2000; 78% Tomatometer)

And then Gladiator, I mean -- Russell's just a stud in that movie. [laughs]

This one I am so obsessed with. This is the movie I've seen the most out of any movie. I've probably seen it 25 or 30 times. Anybody I meet that has not seen this movie, I force them to sit down with me and I show it to them: Man on Fire. I don't know why; it's a weird obsession. I just think Denzel [Washington] is great in it and I think Dakota [Fanning] is amazing in it. It's a brutal one. You know, it's Denzel out for revenge, and their relationship -- Denzel's and Dakota's -- is so touching. And the ending of that movie is by far the best part, too. Tony Scott is one of my favorite directors. Everything they do together is gold.

Iron Man (Jon Favreau, 2008; 94% Tomatometer)

My favorite superhero movie: Iron Man. I loved The Dark Knight, but Iron Man... I just think Robert Downey's character -- and him -- in the movie is so cool. I'm a little jealous because I would've definitely loved to have been Iron Man. It just seems like it'd be so much fun to film.

Number five... oh, I just thought of another one and I'm having a hard time thinking if I wanna switch it. I'm gonna go with The Notebook. So that's my romance; that's my love story. Gosling is amazing in it and I love Rachel McAdams. I love that movie.

Did you see Drive?

Yes. I loved it. People need to see that movie. I love that director, Nic Refn.

Next, Lautner on tackling his first major lead in the action thriller Abduction and dealing with the celebrity of Twilight.

Tailored breast cancer drugs in focus at cancer meet (Reuters)

ZURICH (Reuters) ? Doctors and investors at a cancer conference starting on Friday will be keen to find out more on the effectiveness of two promising new breast cancer drugs from Swiss drugmakers Roche and Novartis.

Roche's T-DM1 and Novartis's Afinitor have been designed to treat two specific types of breast cancer and are among the latest examples of the tailored therapies increasingly being used in oncology.

A mid-stage trial has already shown recently that T-DM1, which combines Roche's Herceptin with a potent cell-killing payload delivered directly to cancer cells, helped patients live longer without their disease getting worse compared with those taking Herceptin and conventional chemotherapy.

It also showed that T-DM1 had fewer side effects. Investors will eye the more detailed data sets to see the size of the benefit and whether the reduced side effects increased patients' likelihood of sticking with the treatment.

Roche and Novartis, the top two global players in oncology, are due to present more detailed data on their drugs at the EMCC European cancer congress, which runs from September 23-27 in Stockholm.

"We have further data at the next cancer conference, and we believe they are quite astounding," Stefan Frings, Global Head of Medical Affairs Oncology at Roche, told Reuters at the group's headquarters in Basel.

Roche hopes the T-DM1 results will help it protect its multibillion-dollar Herceptin franchise even as Herceptin loses exclusivity in the coming years.

T-DM1, which Roche is developing with Immunogen, is a new kind of "armed antibody."

The fact that the drug delivers its toxic payload directly into cells is thought to be key to why it causes fewer cases of common chemotherapy side effects such as hair loss and low white blood cell counts.

"For T-DM1 we want to know more about the extent of those benefits as that ultimately has an impact on the pricing issue, which is important for Roche as they seek to combine more products to treat breast cancer," Helvea analyst Karl-Heinz Koch said.

Novartis has also sounded an upbeat note about the prospects for Afinitor, also known as everolimus, which is already approved for other types of cancer, such as kidney and a rare type of pancreatic cancer.

CEO Joe Jimenez told Reuters in a recent interview it could generate sales of at least $1 billion if it makes it to the market for patients with hormone-sensitive breast cancer. It is planning to file for regulatory approval by the end of 2012.

The interim analysis of a late-stage trial showed Afinitor taken with Pfizer's oestrogen-blocker Aromasin, also known as exemestane, extended the time patients lived without their tumor growing.

More details from the BOLERO-2 study will be presented in Stockholm.

Novartis is seeking to use Afinitor, which works by targeting the protein mTOR in cancer cells, to treat women with hormonal receptor-positive breast cancer who have not responded to initial hormonal therapy.

"After around 25 years of hormonal therapy for this type of patient population, this study represents a really innovative therapy that is a step forward for this group of patients with breast cancer," Alessandro Riva, Global Head of Oncology Development and Medical Affairs at Novartis, told Reuters.

Worldwide, there are approximately 220,000 newly diagnosed cases of ER+HER2- advanced breast cancer each year that could benefit from Afinitor, Riva said, adding the drug was well tolerated and can be taken over a prolonged period.

"The breast cancer story is a very nice journey for everolimus," Riva said. "The journey is not finished because we have a large program now ongoing in the HER2-positive metastatic breast cancer patients."

TAKING AIM

Targeted therapies are treatments that use drugs to identify and attack specific cancer cells without harming normal cells. Monoclonal antibodies, such as Herceptin, and tyrosine kinase inhibitors, such as GlaxoSmithKline's Tykerb, are two types of targeted therapies used in breast cancer.

Roche first broke ground in this field just over a decade ago with Herceptin, which was designed to treat women with breast cancer who make too much of the HER2 protein. About 20 percent of breast cancer patients have these particularly aggressive types of tumors.

It is now also developing pertuzumab, another medication for women with HER2-positive metastatic breast cancer, which it is ultimately hoping to use with T-DM1 to attack the cancer on several different fronts.

Roche is planning to file for approval of pertuzumab this year after positive results from a late-stage trial.

Roche's and Novartis's bid to combine treatments comes as scientists increasingly understand that cancer cells are able to keep growing by finding ways to outmaneuver treatments, so using a cocktail of drugs could be key to the fight.

AFINITOR VS AVASTIN

Afinitor may also be able to capitalize on the recent woes of another of Roche's cancer drugs, Avastin, which was once tipped to become the world's best-selling drug.

U.S. authorities proposed revoking its approval in advanced breast cancer at the end of last year, a decision that dented sales of Avastin in breast cancer on both sides of the Atlantic.

A few months later, advisers to the Food and Drug Administration agreed that the drug was not safe or clinically beneficial, dealing a blow to Roche and also to those patients who had insisted it had saved their lives.

"Afinitor could bring in at least $1.5 billion in sales in the second line HER2-advanced breast cancer setting, and if Novartis could extend use to the first line as well, sales could increase to around $4 or $5 billion," Helvea's Koch said.

"The only competition out there at the moment is Avastin, but it has been knocked off its throne in the United States and also to a large extent in Europe," Koch said.

Building a Massive Contact List: The Ultimate Guide ? Tips & Tactics

I?ve said it many times before on this blog and I?ll keep on saying it. I even say it to my 7 week old son ? ?a business with no email list is no business at all!? Actually I sing it and usually to a melody like ?If you?re happy and you know it?? or ?Ten green bottles?? But hey I?m sleep deprived so I have my excuses. In this post I?ll explain to you how to build an email list.

A business needs new contacts in order to develop and grow. Therefore knowing how to build an email list is an essential skill for any one serious at developing their online presence.? If we had all the time in the world we could go out and meet people face to face and start to share with them how we have the solution to the problems that they are experiencing. However, in order to speak to as many people that you?d need to, in order to be successful, it would take you a fair bit of your time. In fairness this is viable for some high valued products and services. For most businesses though what is needed are ways to draw 1,000s of targeted people onto a web site and capture leads automatically. I spoke about the importance of lead capture online in a number of previous posts. In a way lead capture is step number 2 but step number 1 is attracting people to your web site in the first place.? At the heart of a good list building system there needs to be a number of different strategies to attract people to your website and then capture their details and add them to your list. I have identified 19 powerful ways to magnetize people to your website. Each of these works well on its own, but when used together you?ll have enough traffic to build a massive contact list.? By the time you?ve finished reading you?ll know how to build an email list.

1. Blog Commenting

Build your list by offering some information of value on someone else?s blog ? and provide a link back to your own blog or web page. This list building strategy? is very effective. It works best if you actually provide content of value and not just the average ?Nice blog! Well done ? keep it going.? Instead try to offer a different perspective and give the blog owner and their readers a reason to check out your web site.

2. Blog Widgets

This is more about keeping your visitor on your web site once they have read your post. The longer they stay on your site the more likely they will be to sign up to your offer (and the more successful you?ll be at building your contact list). So consider adding a related posts widget ? these are effective in getting more people to read further posts that are related the one that they initially came to your web site to read. More visitor time on your blog the more successful your list building system will be.

3. Ping Your Fresh Blog Material

Sites like http://pingomatic.com/ provide a service to up date a number of different search engines that your blog has been updated. This is a powerful way to attract people to your new content. Also if you use a WordPress blog you can set it to automatically trackback or pingback other blogs within WP?s dashboard.

4. Free Premium Content

White papers, ebooks and other PDFs are very effective methods to attract a lot of attention from your web sites audience. If you don?t have the time to write one yourself then consider a white label version that you can quickly edit for your business and then offer as a free incentive to capture leads. Or if you want a bespoke approach then write some new material yourself or contract a skilled writer via ww.elance.com but make sure your content is fresh ? don?t just regurgitate what everyone else is saying ? have your own spin.? If you have great material you?ll have no problems in building your contact list.

5. Write Testimonials To Build Your List

Not testimonials for your own products or services from your own customers (although these in themselves are great social proof) but instead provide testimonials for other peoples products and services that are related to your niche. Mark yourself out as being knowledgeable within your niche. Compliment the product or service and find a hook to encourage the reader and/or web site owner to come visit your site. Great list building strategy to hook those already searching for what you have to offer.

6. ?The Best Thing Since Sliced Bread Is Now Dead?

Did you know? Twitter is dead! Yeah, it has been dead almost since its birth and every time it was pronounced dead again it attracted an avalanche of traffic from passionate Tweeters and those who hate Twitter. It works with other disciplines as well ? like life coaching is dead or Apple Mac is now dead! Just don?t apply this to human beings please! I?m sure that you will have seen this strategy play out a few times over the past few years ? there is a reason ? it works! Humans are curious by nature.

7. Answering Questions To Build Your List

Yahoo Answers is a bad resource for answers. In fact last time I dared surf there the question thread I was interested in was at least five years old. However, it is a great resource for questions along with Linked-In Answers. Also, forums are full of questions people ask. All you need to do is provide an answer and people will be so thankful that they?ll come visit your site and who knows even complete one of your conversion goals. There are many ways to do this and no right or wrong way of doing it. I link a specific squeeze page to my answer response so that I can track the success of this strategy.

8. Blogging To Build Your List

There are literally millions of blogs on the internet. Blogging in itself is not all that effective at drawing in traffic. Most blogs are about people pandering to their own vanity or about useless information. Worse still they attract zero traffic. Make sure that you have a goal for your blog. Make sure that you optimize your posts, make sure that you are adding value for your readers, make sure you are measuring the impact of your blog (e.g. how many conversions per day or per week, is it an effective list building system?). Do all this and blogging can be a fantastic way to mark yourself out in your niche.? Bloging can be a phenonmenal list building strategy which will aide you in building a massive contact list.

9. Make Your Content Engaging

If you write engaging content then people will want to read it and come back for more. Remember this little fact ? less than 20% of people will read the content of a blog post, whilst 80% of people will read the blog title. So make sure that the title will hook your readers in and then have good content to keep them hooked. The longer your reader is on your site the more chance you have of capturing their contact details and builidng your list. Don?t be lazy with title tags. Make sure your title tags contain calls to action that will make people click on them.

10. Twitter Re-Visited

OK it?s not new and people have a love/hate relationship with it. However, with over 100 million active users worldwide, there is little doubt that Twitter is capable of driving large quantities of traffic to all types of websites. This makes it a key player in your list building system. And did you know that there is a plug-in for Twitter that lets you automatically re-tweet old posts. This is useful for those who don?t have the time to tweet all day long and it?s a good way to continue sharing excellent content. Personally I set it to 1 ? 2 automated post a day because I hate seeing over automated tweet lines ? not a good look! Link back to resource page

11. Manual Submission To Online Leading Directories

This will never change, not in 2012 not in the next 10 years. If you want to build free targeted traffic and grow a massive contact list then you need your web sites page or post links stretching across the web. No better way to do this than by using online directories. These are way too valuable to ignore. Try to get into DMOZ, Ezilon, Yahoo and Bing directories. It?s hard to get in but once you do there is no way of stopping you on your listing building quest.

12. Add Images To Help Build Your List

More and more people are now using image searches. Sometimes this might not necessarily be to find your content but more around someone searching for an image for their own marketing. But because you have a great image they come to your web site intent on copying it. But low and behold you have a great title ? its grabbing.? So they stay and read. Oh and you have great related content.? So they stay and read some more. See where this is going? A real nice trick is to convert your ?call to action? into an image file. Doh just told you my mates IM secret ? how careless!

13. Using Automated Back Links

Now stop it! Do you really think that paying $19.97 for 10,000 back links to your web site is a good idea? I won?t insult your intelligence, but what I will say is if your content is good enough people will automatically link to you. Give up on getting useless links and concentrate on great content. Things that appear too good to be true usually are! Don?t fall victim to the lazy link builder!

14. Use Humour To Help Build Your List

Nothing builds rapport more with your audience than the use of humour. There are many great examples of humour on the internet, but in view the funniest site is theoatmeal.com. This site is run by a guy who used to be an SEO expert and has now decided to move into the production of funny cartoons full time as he found humour to a real crowd puller. So follow his lead and consider adding humour to your website or develop a cartoon related to your niche like this http://theoatmeal.com/comics/websites_stop you can create your own humorous cartoon at http://www.toondoo.com/

15. Being Controversial

This is not for everyone. I have to say that from my experience it can work ? especially when it?s both humorous and has some underlying point to it. Must admit I?m not as comfortable with this one just because I?m a chilled out guy and I don?t take immense pleasure in rocking the boat. I tend to flirt with this and therefore my overall brand is not controversial, but posts where I have been controversial (on issues that I personally feel strongly about) are the ones that people have engaged in the most. But be careful not to simply spout out rubbish that is controversial for the sake of it ? your audience will get wise to your nonsense.

16. Know Your Niche

Part of why someone may want to follow you or connect with you or subscribe to your site is because you know something that they don?t. Someone wanting to build a massive contact list should keep on top of memes, read Reddit daily, use StumbleUpon, engage on Twitter, and read quality marketing News. You should conduct in-depth analysis around the communities that relate to your niche.

17. Link To Authority Sites in Your Niche

This needs to be well thought out. No point trying to offer a competitors audience directly the same products or services, but try to provide either added value content not already covered or offer an incentive for your competitor to link to your site ? maybe offer a commission for every x amount of people who either buy or subscribe to your site.? This can be a great way to build your list.

18. Posting To Forums To Help Build Your List

Spend 5 minutes at a time on each industry-related forum you can find that you think will be beneficial to your site, and post useful, insightful comments to build up your reputation. The benefits in the long run include reputation, trust and relevant visitors. This will help in giving you credibility which is a key factor in any good list building system.? Forget buying a forum spamming software tool. It won?t work ? it?ll only spam your post to forums where everyone else spams their posts and will therefore be lost in a mountain of spam that has never been read by anyone and never will be! Stop being lazy!

19. Power of Video In List Building

Create a great post.? Do hours of research.? Refine your post over time and just maybe on week 1 you?ll get on page 3-4 of Google (assuming that you?re going for a big ticket keyword).? By week 4 you may just have made page 1 or the top of page 2.? But shoot a video.? Add it to your post and watch with shear joy as it goes straight in on page 1 of Google for Video searches practically on day 1.

This should be enough ideas to get you started with building your massive contact list.? Check back here as I?ll be adding more list building strategies over time as people share what works for them.? Also I conduct list building strategies research every week so that I keep up to date with what?s new.
