Military watchdog: Intelligence leaker should not be in uniform

A military watchdog says convicted U.S. Army Private Bradley Manning should not have been allowed to enlist in the military based on the moral standards of the time.

Elaine Donnelly, president of the Center for Military Readiness, says Manning was not eligible to be in the armed forces based on the 1993 law that has been mislabeled "Don't ask, don't tell," and wasn't repealed until after Manning enlisted.

Manning, a former intelligence analyst, faces up to 136 years in prison for convictions on multiple espionage, theft, and computer fraud charges. He was acquitted of the most serious charge ? aiding the enemy.

All of the counts involve Manning's leaking of Afghanistan and Iraq battlefield reports.

"He was not eligible because he engaged in homosexual conduct. This was known,? Donnelly tells OneNewsNow.

?So for the military to look the other way to retain him, not only for that reason even though he was ineligible, but they retained him despite bizarre behavior that indicated instability,? she adds.

Regarding the sentencing, Donnelly notes that Manning ??was not found innocent, he was found guilty of all the other charges, some of which he admitted to."

Donnelly says Manning's case can be compared to that of Fort Hood shooter Nidal Hasan, who also displayed unstable behavior before his murderous 2009 rampage at the Texas Army post.?

17 Hall of Famers ask Goodell for help

Seventeen Pro Football Hall of Famers and Dave Robinson, who will be inducted this weekend, have signed a letter telling NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell they are concerned about medical care for former players and the league's "continued denial of the link between repeated head impacts and permanent brain damage."

The letter, obtained by The Associated Press on Wednesday and signed by NFL greats including Tony Dorsett, Floyd Little, Leroy Kelly and Paul Krause, comes just a few days ahead of the Hall of Fame festivities in Canton, Ohio.

The league is being sued by about 4,200 players who say they suffer from dementia, Alzheimer's disease and other neurological conditions, which they believe stem from on-field concussions. Ten of the letter's signees are plaintiffs in the ongoing legal fight: Dorsett, Kelly, Krause, Lem Barney, Chris Doleman, Mel Renfro, Tommy McDonald, Randy White, Rayfield Wright and Joe DeLamielleure.

Goodell and the NFL insist that player safety has always been a top priority, and league spokesman Greg Aiello told the AP in an email Wednesday night that the players don't have their facts right.

"We have not seen the letter, but we make no such denial regarding concussions," Aiello said. "In fact, our concussion poster for players in every locker room, created in conjunction with the CDC a few years ago, states: 'Repetitive brain injury, when not managed promptly and properly, may cause permanent damage to your brain.'"

In the concussion legal dispute, a federal judge in Philadelphia has ordered the two sides into mediation over how the complaints will be litigated ? in court or in arbitration. U.S. District Judge Anita B. Brody asked for a progress report by Sept. 3 and put a gag order on the lawyers involved.

Clearly, there was no silencing of the Hall of Famers, many of whom plan to be in Canton for the 50th anniversary of the football shrine.

"Legions of former players suffer short-term memory loss and other neurological issues, and many cannot even remember taking part in some of the NFL's greatest moments," they wrote to Goodell. "In the meantime, the NFL publicly touts the 'benefits' it provides to former players with brain injuries, while denying these players necessary medical monitoring, long-term care, and security.

"No one wants to see another generation of players suffer this fate. As former players, we refuse to stand by quietly and watch men who unknowingly sacrificed their health and future to the NFL go without the care they desperately need.

"Mr. Goodell, we ask you, as the commissioner of the league, to provide the security and care all former players and their families deserve."

Analysis: Ford could close U.S. pension funding gap by end of 2014

By Deepa Seetharaman

DETROIT (Reuters) - Thanks to rising interest rates and an injection of cash, Ford Motor Co could be in a position that would have been unthinkable only a few years ago - with a fully funded U.S. pension fund.

Ford, which went through a searing restructuring in 2006, but avoided the bankruptcy route of its rivals General Motors and Chrysler , could cut its U.S. pension shortfall by half or even more by the end of this year from $9.7 billion at the end of 2012, according to securities analysts and Reuters calculations.

And the gap could be eliminated by the end of 2014 provided interest rates rise as economists expect and the stock market remains robust. That may give Ford added resources to pay down debt, invest in its businesses, or boost dividend payments, analysts said.

"It is a true obligation of the company right now and it's taking quite a bit of capital," Ford Chief Financial Officer Bob Shanks said of the automaker's pension gap in an interview.

"Once we get it fully funded, de-risked and sort of put it in a box, it gives us the ability not to worry about it so much and take future cash flow and put it wherever we want," he said.

If Ford fully funds its U.S. pension plan by the end of next year that would be quicker than many analysts had expected. GM could be about one to two years behind Ford in closing its U.S. pension gap, said Guggenheim Securities LLC analyst Matt Stover.

But critical to this scenario is that interest rates used to calculate retiree pension obligations continue to rise. Ford would also have to be willing to contribute at least $1 billion in 2014 to close its U.S. pension gap, analysts said.

Eliminating the shortfall is "possible by the end of 2014 and it's going to be because interest rates climb," said Stover, who predicts Ford's U.S. pension plans will be underfunded by about $4 billion by the end of 2013.

Ford's U.S. pension obligation was $52 billion at the end of last year, while GM's was about $82 billion.

GM was the first of the U.S. automakers to establish a pension plan in 1950 as part of the "Treaty of Detroit," a contract negotiated by legendary United Auto Workers union leader Walter Reuther. Ford and Chrysler followed suit.

But by the mid-2000s, pensions and other retiree benefits became an ever-increasing liability that automakers said added as much as $2,000 to the cost of a vehicle and put them at a disadvantage against foreign rivals.

Since then, GM and Ford have both taken steps to "de-risk" their pension plans by closing off their plans to new participants, offering lump-sum buyouts and shifting to more conservative investments.

Last year, GM cut $29 billion, or one-fifth, of its global pension liability when it shifted management of white-collar pension plans for 118,000 salaried retirees to a unit of Prudential Financial Inc .

But underfunding remains an issue, partly because that shortfall is viewed by credit ratings agencies as debt.

Ford plans to inject $5 billion cash into its global pension plans this year to help reduce the underfunding - though some of that will go towards pension plans elsewhere in the world.

To put the underfunding and Ford's cash injection in context, the automaker spent $5.5 billion in 2012 on product development, building factories and other capital expenditures.

A $4 BILLION BOON

Companies calculate the present value of their future pension liabilities using a so-called discount rate, which is based on corporate bond rates. A higher rate means lower liabilities, meaning that a company doesn't have to set aside as much cash now to pay retirees in the future.

Based on the most optimistic scenario laid out by actuarial firm Milliman, higher rates alone could narrow Ford's pension gap by about $4 billion by the end of 2014. Stover said higher rates could close about half of Ford's U.S. pension shortfall.

"The auto companies have always been associated with having these big pension liabilities," Citi analyst Itay Michaeli said. "It becomes a frustration for investors to deal with more volatility on top of already volatile industry dynamics."

Closing the U.S. pension gap "takes an element that has arguably weighed on investor sentiment and just takes that issue away," Michaeli added.

The discount rate, which is based on corporate bond yields and is used to determine the present value of payments they make over the life of their plans, has risen this year to 4.74 percent in June from 3.96 percent in December, according to Milliman.

By the end of 2013, the discount rate could be as high as 5.04 percent, and by the end of 2014 it could be up to 5.64 percent, Milliman estimates.

A smaller pension gap would likely pave the way for Standard & Poor's to upgrade Ford's credit ratings upgrade to investment grade, Michaeli said. That would allow the automaker to fund the remaining U.S. pension gap with unsecured debt.

"By issuing debt, what you're doing is freeing up free cash flow," he said, adding that could be used to boost dividends, develop new vehicles or pay off debt.

For Ford, a one percentage point increase in the discount rate alone could lower its U.S. pension liability by $2.3 billion, Shanks said during Ford's second-quarter earnings call.

Louis-Dreyfus praises Gandolfini's final film role

SANTA MONICA, Calif. (AP) ? Julia Louis-Dreyfus says audiences will "really freak out" over James Gandolfini's performance in his final film.

Gandolfini plays her character's love interest in Nicole Holofcener's "Enough Said," set for release in September. The actress, who is promoting her role in Disney's "Planes," says she worked "intimately" with Gandolfini on the shoot just months before he died.

Gandolfini died in June of a heart attack at age 51 while vacationing in Italy. Louis-Dreyfus says it was a "dreamy experience" to act alongside him, adding that his character has no trace of Tony Soprano-style darkness.

The romantic comedy will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September.

Tourists on?Samet?island?were warned to stay away from the once-serene beach, marred by inky globs as hundreds of workers in white jumpsuits labored to scrape the sand clean and remove oil from the water.

About 50 tons of oil spilled into the sea off Rayong province on Saturday morning from a leak in the pipeline operated by PTT Global Chemical Plc, a subsidiary of state-owned oil and gas company PTT Plc.

The leak was the fourth major oil spill in the country's history, Energy Minister Pongsak Raktapongpaisal said.

Streaks of crude oil about 300 meters (1,000 feet) wide marred the shore of Prao Bay on?Samet?Island, one of the most popular beach destinations for Thai and foreign tourists in the Gulf of Thailand, Rayong Deputy Gov. Supeepat Chongpanish said Monday.

He said authorities closed the bay as 300 workers attempted to remove the oil from the white beach and the water.

"The top priorities right now are to get rid of the oil on the sand and the seawater, and to make sure the spill doesn't spread to other shores," Supeepat said. "This is a very beautiful, white, sandy beach, so we want to make the spill go away as soon as possible."

"The black waves started rolling in since last night and by the morning the beach was all tainted with oil," said Kevin Wikul, the assistant front desk officer at a resort in Prao Bay. "We have advised our guests against going near the beach and some of them have asked for early check-outs."

The nearby area has been declared a disaster zone by provincial authorities, and those affected by the spill will receive immediate assistance.

The company said it detected a leak when crude oil from a tanker moored offshore was being transferred to the pipeline, 20 kilometers (11 miles) from a refinery in Map Ta Phut, one of the largest industrial estates in Southeast Asia.

The company said in a statement Sunday that it has flown in oil spill management experts and a plane from Singapore to remove the crude oil. Thai navy vessels also joined the cleanup efforts.

Authorities said it would take some time to assess the environmental damage.

"The spill is definitely having an impact on the environment, but we have not detected any deaths of marine animals yet at this point," provincial Gov. Wichit Chatphaisit said. "PTT will have to take responsibility for the damage this has caused."

He said pollution control department officials had expressed concern about the effects of the chemical used to clean up the spill.

PTTGC apologized for the incident and said the cleanup will likely be completed within three days.

"We acknowledge this incident has damaged our reputation and we will not let it happen again," CEO Anon Sirisaengtaksin told a news conference.

In 2009, another PTT subsidiary was involved in the Montara oil spill, one of Australia's worst oil disasters, in the Timor Sea off western Australia.

Nine Miami-Dade high schools have new football coaches

The Miami Herald

There are nine high schools overall in Dade that have new football coaches with the start of fall practices less than a week away.

A few are settling in to their new digs.

??Homestead has hired former Miami Palmetto coach Larry Coffey as its new coach. Coffey spent last season away from coaching, but coached at Palmetto for six years prior compiling a 52-32 record and leading the Panthers to the regional semifinals in 2008.

Coffey coached as an assistant at Homestead prior to that and has also coached at powerhouse Belle Glade Glades Central.

The Broncos went 6-4 last season under Patrick Burrows, who stepped down and became the assistant principal at nearby Richmond Heights Middle School. The Broncos lost a playoff tiebreaker against Miami Northwestern and Miami Carol City in the highly-competitive District 16-6A.

Homestead isn?t the only school that recently switched coaches.

??New Miami Southridge athletic director Shawn Carney confirmed that Lamont Green recently stepped down and the school named former Westminster Christian assistant coach Don McKnight as its new coach.

Green, The Miami Herald?s Class 8A-6A Coach of the Year in 2011, led South Miami to a 9-3 playoff season that year. Southridge struggled to a 3-7 season last year.

Green has since accepted a post as assistant coach at Miami Coral Reef with coach Chevas Clements.

??Longtime Miami Sunset coach Malkin, who was the head coach for the Knights the past seven seasons and led them to the playoffs four times during that span. Malkin stepped down before the summer and is now the offensive coordinator at Miami Palmetto.

The school promoted assistant and former defensive standout Joey Petisco as its new coach over the summer. Petisco graduated in 2002 and spent past seven seasons as an assistant under Malkin. Petisco played college football at the University of Dubuque in Iowa.

These schools join Miami Central (Roland Smith), Miami Carol City (Aubrey Hill), Barrington Christian (Tee Wooten), Mater Academy (Javier Valdes), Miami High (Ivan Rosales), Palmer Trinity (Darin DiBello) among those that have changed head coaches since the end of last season.

SIGNINGS

??Four Westminster Christian girls? volleyball seniors signed with colleges recently.

Outside hitter Sylvia Hernandez, the Miami Herald?s Class 4A-2A Volleyball Player of the Year and rated one of the top players in the country, signed with the University of Miami.

Libero Susie Forbes signed with Palm Beach Atlantic University, outside hitter Jenny Ceballos signed with Rollins College and setter Kelsey Taylor signed with Miami-Dade College.

The group has led the Warriors to the Class 3A state semifinals the past two seasons.

Miami Monsignor Pace 5-9 senior basketball guard Kadesha Floyd signed with Mississippi Valley State University over the summer.

Bear River Health Department spokeswoman Jill Parker said Sunday morning that the amount of oil that spilled into the canal was still being calculated.

The spill was contained and diverted late Saturday night into a field near Highway 91. Parker said drinking water in the area was never immediately in risk. Several departments were assisting with the cleanup Sunday.

Residents who notice their irrigation water is brown or has an unusual order were told not to water their properties.

A press conference was scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Sunday to update residents on the situation.

Information will be updated as it becomes available.

AP sources: Pentagon likely to cut furlough days

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Defense department civilians will likely face up to five fewer unpaid furlough days than originally planned, as Pentagon leaders scrimp to find up to $900 million in savings in the final months of the budget year that ends Sept. 30, officials told The Associated Press.

Officials said no final decisions have been made, but they believe civilian workers will be forced to take six to eight unpaid days off rather than the 11 days that had been scheduled. The move comes as workers begin their fourth week of furloughs ? a decision that riled department employees and prompted many to complain directly to Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel as he visited military bases earlier this month.

Hagel has been saying that budget crunchers have been doing all they can to find saving to shorten the furlough time. Defense officials said Monday that they do not expect an announcement this week because the numbers have not yet been finalized.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the matter by name publicly.

They cautioned that the savings are for this year only, and won't affect likely budget cuts in 2014, if members of Congress don't act to avoid automatic, across-the-board cuts slated for next year.

About 650,000 department civilians have been taking one furlough day each week since early July. The furloughs were expected to save roughly $2 billion.

According to one defense official, current budget projections suggest that if Pentagon budget chiefs find about $500 million in savings, the number of furlough days will be shaved to eight. If they can find $900 million, the furloughs will be cut to six days.

Officials said the savings are the result of a number of things, including penny-pinching by the military services and Congress' decision to give the Pentagon more flexibility in moving money around between accounts.

During a recent swing down the East Coast to bases in North Carolina, South Carolina and Florida, worried defense workers peppered Hagel with questions about the furloughs and their job security. And they gasped in surprise as the Pentagon chief warned that budget cuts will probably continue next year, likely triggering more furloughs and, possibly, layoffs.

Facing $37 billion in budget cuts this year, Pentagon leaders initially announced the 11 furlough days, arguing that they needed to shift money to other priorities, including combat training, flight hours, and efforts to bring tons of equipment home from Afghanistan. Since then, budget chiefs have been analyzing the numbers in a persistent effort to find unspent dollars as they neared the end of the fiscal year.

The Pentagon faces the prospect of an additional $52 billion budget cut in 2014 unless Congress and the White House come up with a deficit-cutting plan.

About 85 percent of the department's civilians have been subject to furloughs. The bulk of the exempt employees are foreign nationals or workers not paid through appropriated funding. Nearly 7,000 defense intelligence workers are also exempt, along with about 29,000 workers at Navy shipyards, where officials worried that the harm to shop maintenance would end up costing more than the salary cuts would save.

How the 'youth bulge' can make or break a country

IN 1945, Masaru Ibuka and Akio Morita launch their radio-repair shop, under the brand name Sony, in bombed-out Tokyo. In 2010, Greece faces a mounting debt crisis as its economy teeters on the brink of collapse. And starting in 2011, revolution grips the Arab world as the people of Tunisia, Egypt, Syria and elsewhere begin the long fight for democracy.

These events may seem unconnected. Each is undoubtedly the product of very different, complex circumstances. Yet some political scientists have begun to suggest that one common process was bubbling under all three, and many other political and economic shifts besides: a change in the age structure of a country's population, known as the demographic transition.

A country goes through this transition as increasing numbers of infants reach adulthood and then move into middle and old age. It is generally accompanied by developments in infrastructure, urbanisation and education, and so it ...

Exclusive: 'Despicable Me 2' denied release in China

By Brent Lang

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - "Despicable Me 2" has been denied a theatrical release in China, TheWrap has learned.

It is not clear why the country rejected the film and whether it had to do with censorship issues, but the Universal film - a juggernaut at the global box office - will not get a chance to crack the second largest film market in the world, according to a Chinese film executive.

The rejection potentially denies the film tens of millions of dollars of box-office revenue.

Universal declined to comment.

The decision continues what is shaping up to be a summer of frustration for Hollywood when it comes to China, where authorities turn down high-profile films like "World War Z" and send promotional activities into a nosedive.

Earlier this month, Disney was forced to cancel a visit by star Johnny Depp and producer Jerry Bruckheimer to China to promote "The Lone Ranger" after its release date in the country became a moving target.

Though China's film market has continued to grow more than 35 percent through the first half of 2013, revenue from imported films has shrunk by 21.3 percent, according to data by China's State Administration of Radio, Film and Television.

China has been a particularly difficult market for Universal to crack in recent months. The studio did manage to secure a berth for its other summer blockbuster "Fast & Furious 6," but the film will not open in China until this Friday, almost two months since its U.S. debut in the United States -- and that could be trouble for the film, which is not in 3D.

Films that are made in 2D need to hit the China market as close to their premiere in other countries or they run the risk of competing with pirated versions of themselves, according to the Chinese film executive.

Even without its release in China, "Despicable Me 2" has generated nearly $600 million worldwide and "Fast & Furious 6" has racked up more than $700 million globally.

There's a reason why studios are desperate to break into the country, however. Among the films did secure Chinese releases this year, "Iron Man 3" has brought in $121 million from the country while "The Croods" grossed $63 million.

Windows Phone has had difficulty drawing the same level of attention that app developers lavish on Android and iOS and now Apple has ensured that its total app store count has been reduced by one. AppleInsider reports that travel navigation app HopStop dropped support for Windows Phone over the weekend, just days after being acquired by Apple to help bolster its iOS Maps application. AppleInsider also speculates that Apple hasn?t yet stopped HopStop?s support for Android because ?it may be getting valuable feedback and usage data across that platforms? much larger installed base,? although it expects Apple will pull support for Android at some point.

World awaits first glimpse of royal baby

By Belinda Goldsmith

LONDON (Reuters) - The world was awaiting the first glimpse of Britain's new prince on Tuesday with camera crews poised to photograph Prince William and his wife, Kate, leaving a London hospital with their baby son.

Kate, 31, gave birth to the couple's first child, who is third in line to the British throne, on Monday afternoon, ending weeks of feverish anticipation about the arrival and surprising royal watchers, who were widely expecting a girl.

The baby's name will be announced later but George and James, both traditional royal names, were favoured choices with British bookmakers for the child, who could one day be king.

The popular couple sidestepped tradition by announcing the birth via a press release but were expected to adhere to protocol by giving the public the first sight of the royal baby on the steps as they leave St. Mary's Hospital in west London.

"All we will probably see is a glimpse of the top of the baby's head but they will stick to this tradition," said Joe Little, managing editor of Majesty magazine.

"After that we won't see them for some time. Having a baby is a very private moment and they are a private couple so the next time we see the baby will be the official photo and that could be weeks."

Kensington Palace announced the arrival of a boy weighing 8 lbs 6 oz (3.8 kg) at about 8:30 p.m. on Monday, four hours after his birth, saying Kate and her child were doing well and would remain in hospital overnight. Prince William was with them.

Their son is third in line to the throne after grandfather Prince Charles and father Prince William, 31, and pushes the fun-loving Prince Harry, William's brother, into fourth place.

BOOST FOR BRITAIN

Congratulations flooded in from all over the world after the announcement of the birth, which was followed moment-by-moment by the world media as well as the British press with the excitement seen as a boost for Britons facing economic austerity.

British tabloid newspaper The Sun temporarily renamed itself The Son in honour of the baby while the left-leaning Guardian newspaper provided readers of its website with a "Republican" button so that they could filter out the barrage of royal news if they wanted.

The birth fuels a new wave of popularity for the House of Windsor led by the younger royals, William and Harry, who were both born to the late Princess Diana at St. Mary's Hospital.

Support for the royals dipped after Diana's death in a car crash in Paris in 1997, a year after her divorce from Prince Charles, as the royals were accused of being out of touch with modern Britain in the way they handled the death of the popular princess.

But last year's celebrations of Queen Elizabeth's 60th year on the throne showed the affection with which she is held by most of the population despite a small Republican movement.

Hordes of TV crews and photographers, and royal fans wrapped in Union Jacks, remained camped outside the hospital overnight Monday, waiting for the first photo of the baby, who will be called the Prince of Cambridge.

Prince William and Kate, who met when they were students at St. Andrews University in Scotland about 10 years ago, have officially been known as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge since their sumptuous royal wedding in April 2011.

Tourists in London were revelling in the celebrations that top a run of British sporting victories and an unusual heatwave.

"For me it's a wonderful, historic event. You spend a lot of time studying these things. To actually get to be here to witness one is tremendous," said George Boudreau, 48, a history professor from Philadelphia, outside Buckingham Palace.

Google invests in Glass chipmaker Himax

Google Inc. is investing in a Taiwanese microchip maker that makes chips used in its Google Glass, the eyeglass-enabled devices it is testing that can shoot photos and video and access the Internet.

The deal with Tainan, Taiwan-based Himax Technologies Inc. gives Google a 6.3 percent stake in the Himax Display Inc. subsidiary in the form of preferred shares. An option to buy more shares could eventually raise that stake to 14.8 percent.

Himax Technologies now owns 81.5 percent of Himax Display and says it will remain the subsidiary's majority shareholder.

The deal is expected to close this quarter. The companies did not put a value on it.

U.S.-traded shares of Himax Technologies rose $1, or 19 percent, to $6.17 in premarket trading. Google's shares rose $2.40 to $899.

Al Qaeda militants flee Iraq jail in violent mass break-out

By Kareem Raheem and Ziad al-Sinjary

BAGHDAD/MOSUL, Iraq (Reuters) - Hundreds of convicts, including senior members of al Qaeda, broke out of Iraq's Abu Ghraib jail as comrades launched a military-style assault to free them, authorities said on Monday.

The deadly raid on the high-security jail happened as Sunni Muslim militants are gaining momentum in their insurgency against the Shi'ite-led government that came to power after the U.S. invasion to oust Saddam Hussein.

Suicide bombers drove cars packed with explosives to the gates of the prison on the outskirts of Baghdad on Sunday night and blasted their way into the compound, while gunmen attacked guards with mortars and rocket-propelled grenades.

Other militants took up positions near the main road, fighting off security reinforcements sent from Baghdad as several militants wearing suicide vests entered the prison on foot to help free the inmates.

Ten policemen and four militants were killed in the ensuing clashes, which continued until Monday morning, when military helicopters arrived, helping to regain control.

By that time, hundreds of inmates had succeeded in fleeing Abu Ghraib, the prison made notorious a decade ago by photographs showing abuse of prisoners by U.S. soldiers.

"The number of escaped inmates has reached 500, most of them were convicted senior members of al Qaeda and had received death sentences," Hakim Al-Zamili, a senior member of the security and defense committee in parliament, told Reuters.

"The security forces arrested some of them, but the rest are still free."

One security official told Reuters on condition of anonymity: "It's obviously a terrorist attack carried out by al Qaeda to free convicted terrorists with al Qaeda."

A simultaneous attack on another prison, in Taji, around 20 km (12 miles) north of Baghdad, followed a similar pattern, but guards managed to prevent any inmates escaping. Sixteen soldiers and six militants were killed.

CONVOY ATTACK

Sunni insurgents, including the al Qaeda-affiliated Islamic State of Iraq, have been regaining strength in recent months and striking on an almost daily basis against Shi'ite Muslims and security forces amongst other targets.

The violence has raised fears of a return to full-blown conflict in a country where Kurds, Shi'ite and Sunni Muslims have yet to find a stable way of sharing power.

Recent attacks have targeted mosques, amateur football matches, shopping areas and cafes where people gather to socialize after breaking their daily fast for the holy Muslim month of Ramadan.

Relations between Islam's two main denominations have been put under further strain from the civil war in Syria, which has drawn in Shi'ite and Sunni fighters from Iraq and beyond to fight against each other.

In the city of Mosul, 390 km (240 miles) north of Baghdad, a suicide bomber detonated a vehicle packed with explosives behind a military convoy in the eastern Kokchali district, killing at least 22 soldiers and three passers-by, police said.

Following the attack, leaflets were found near mosques in Mosul signed by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, which was formed earlier this year through a merger between Syrian and Iraqi affiliates of al Qaeda.

"After receiving information from our precious nation's sons about the arrival of a convoy of the Safavid Raafidi Army... the lions of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant have confronted them," read the leaflets, using derogatory terms to refer to Shi'ites.

Four other policemen, were killed in a separate attack in western Mosul, Iraq's third-largest city and capital of the Sunni-dominated Nineveh province.

Nearly 600 people have been killed in militant attacks across Iraq so far this month, according to violence monitoring group Iraq Body Count.

That is still well below the height of bloodletting in 2006-07, when the monthly death toll sometimes exceeded 3,000.

Sunday Q & A: Fantasy sports can read like an open book

How bad do you want to lose in your fantasy league?

I can get you from the first pick to last place faster than a Mark Sanchez butt fumble.

It was in everyone's best interest that two decades ago I swore off playing in rotisserie-style anything of any kind -- football, baseball, golf, Little League T-ball. I continue to enjoy this cleansing of the soul and maintain a purified outlook at just how messed up a fantasy league can be to the psyche and checkbook.

So, check out a new book by Matthew Berry.

In "Fantasy Life: The Outrageous, Uplifting and Heartbreaking World of Fantasy Sports from the Guy Who's Lived It" (Riverhead Books, $27.95, 338 pages), I hesitate to say fantasy looks real again.

Before I take that walk of shame again, I needed to track down Berry, who once lived in Sherman Oaks when he did TV sitcom writing but has since moved to Connecticut:

Q: Fantasy leagues took up too much of my time and energy and I was losing to guys who picked players with as much research as they would in making a $2 bet on a thoroughbred at Santa Anita. Why should I consider ever getting back into it? Can you convince me one way or another?

A: Unless you're anti-fun, and I don't get that sense, why would you

not want to do it? You get to have a rooting interest in games you'd normally not care about. And if you're not a sports fan, you have a reason to watch. Now that you're older, you probably would have a little better perspective of all that.

Q: The perspective I have is feeling that sports fantasy leagues are too mercenary. It forces you to invest a rooting interest in a player which could be at the expense of rooting against a team you've already been emotionally tied to for many years.

Is there a way to rectify that psychological hurdle?

A: It goes to your fandom. I don't think there's anything wrong with rooting for individual players over your 'real life' team. It really sounds more like you have some guilt issues, to be perfectly honest. So who cares? I get questions a lot, from those especially who are anti-fantasy, who say, 'That makes you root for players instead of teams.' I'm like, 'Who are you to legislate how I enjoy sports?' There are different ways to enjoy everything in life. Whether I'm rooting for the group of players I've selected on a fantasy team or you're rooting for another group of players that a general manager has selected, we're still rooting for groups of players. As long as we're both enjoying sports, who cares how we're doing it?

Q: I guess I've felt I had conflicted rooting interests.

A: Got it. In that case, maybe pick your teams a little better. If you want to win, it's not necessarily the best strategy to pick your favorite players, but I don't have an issue with that because in the end fantasy is supposed to be fun. That's what this book is supposed to show. It's not a book about how to win your fantasy league and crush your opponents. It's a book that celebrates all the things I love about fantasy sports -- the trash-talking, the punishments for losing, the trophies, the creative ways people have tried to cheat. There's a story from Senator Rick Santorum about how he had to do a fantasy draft on the day he dropped out of the presidential race. What's lost in there is he plays in an American League-only fantasy baseball league. The reason he does it is because he was from Pennsylvania, where he has the Pirates and Phillies as National League teams, and he didn't want to have to root against either of those teams. That was the idea.

Q: That makes sense. In reading the book, I get the sense you've become used to being a 'fantasy shrink,' where people confess to someone like you who'd understand where they were coming from. Is that how you feel?

A: There is the saying that the most interesting conversation in the world is all about your fantasy team. And the most boring conversation in the world is anyone else's fantasy team. Right? It's the new golf story or vacation pictures. No one cares about your team other than you. Except me. That's my job. I like to hear it. I want to hear it. And I'm amazed what people admit to me. I've been playing almost 30 years and there were many stories where I was like, 'Wow, I've never heard that one.' I thought I'd get a lot of stories about guys who drafted while their wives were giving birth, those kinds of things. I was shocked by the majority of the stories I got -- like a league that forced the loser to get a tattoo of Justin Bieber. A guy who continued drafting through a bombing while he was in Afghanistan. A league that forced its loser to dress like a lion while the other owners hunted him down with paintball guns. There's the league where a guy and his wife are owners and the wife passes away, so the husband starts making these trades with the dead wife ...

Q: You've also tapped into stories about a priest, a rabbi or and a minister in a league ... and all hell breaks loose?

A: Sounds like the start of a bad joke, but it's actually three different leagues. Cheating pastors! I couldn't believe that happens, but it has. In a league filled with other pastors at his church.

Q: You can justify fantasy leagues as something that "gives people who normally would not have a reason to interact an excuse to talk ... from the CEO and mailroom guys to your long-lost cousins and everyone in between." What if I wanted to be in a fantasy league and not talk to anyone? Does that defeat the purpose?

A: Not at all. Go to ESPN.com and sign up for an anonymous league. But now I'm sensing some conflict, more guilt, some anti-social behavior. I think you've got more issues to work through here.

Q: Maybe I'm just in the wrong leagues. What other fantasy leagues that you do?

A: I have a fantasy summer movie league with all my buddies who are screen writers and directors. There's about 30 of us; we threw up a website called summermovieleague.com to keep track of it -- anyone can play if they want -- and you just pick 10 movies you think will make the most money for the summer for your own fantasy studio. I do pretty well, but I think this year "The Lone Ranger" is going to keep me from winning the title.

Q: That darn Adam Sandler.

A: I know, and I didn't even pick "Grown Ups 2."

Q: I could have told you to take that one.

A: Maybe this is a league for you then.

Q: As long as I don't have to get a tattoo if I lose.

A: Make sure that's in the bylaws.

Note: Berry will sign books and do a fantasy 'Q and A' at Dave and Busters in Irvine today at 6 p.m., followed by the Barnes & Noble at the Grove near Farmer's Market on Fairfax on Monday at 7 p.m.

Baby buzz proves celeb power of Britain's royals

LONDON (AP) ? In London, the royal birth is a tale of two cities ? a moment of history unfolding amid the frenzy of daily urban life.

Outside the London hospital where Prince William's wife, Kate, was in labor Monday, Londoners slowed their daily rush on a scorching summer day to take a quick picture and wonder at the vast media throng, then moved on.

Two miles away at Buckingham Palace, the news seemed more momentous, an extra jolt of history to the royal pomp and pageantry that attracts tourists in their thousands each day. They may no longer wield political power, but Britain's royals are unsurpassed as celebrities and cultural icons.

"They're sort of the celebrities of the world," said Anne Frey, a beautician from Madison, Wisconsin, watching the daily Changing of the Guard ceremony with her husband.

Excitement for the imminent royal baby was strong among the crowds lining the black iron gates to watch soldiers in high bearskin hats, sweating stoically under their scarlet tunics, march behind a brass band into the palace grounds.

"We can tell our kids one day that we were here when it happened," said Jill Muencz, a tourist from Cleveland, Ohio.

"It's fantasy," she added. "We don't get to experience all that" as Americans.

The royal labor dominated British news bulletins Monday, as media from around the world provided nonstop comment, color and speculation from outside the private Lindo Wing of St. Mary's Hospital, around the corner from London's Paddington Station.

Prime Minister David Cameron said "the whole country is excited" ? and while that may be politician's hyperbole, there was a sense that the birth of a future monarch was a feel-good event to add to a long spell of hot, sunny weather and British sports successes at Wimbledon, the Tour de France cycling race and in the Ashes cricket competition.

Few Britons were willing to go as far in their royalism as Terry Hutt, a 78-year-old carpenter from Cambridge in eastern England, who has camped outside the hospital for 12 days, sleeping outside the hospital on a bench covered with a Union Jack blanket.

Hutt, who is proud to have met every royal from the late Queen Mother on, said he was doing his bit for Britain by camping outside the hospital in his red, white and blue Union Jack suit, holding flags and congratulatory banners.

"To me, the royal family play a very, very important role," he said. "Visitors from all over the world haven't got a king and queen. It's a plus for us."

As London commuters rushed past the hospital to work, Pascal Faure, a maintenance contractor originally from South Africa, stopped to snap a picture on his phone for friends at home and in Australia.

"It's part of their heritage, I guess, their culture," said Faure, who claimed his own tenuous royal connection: "Apparently my third cousin once removed is Chelsy" Davy, Prince Harry's former girlfriend.

He also had more insight than most into the 5,000-pound ($8,000) -a-night private wing where the Duchess of Cambridge is giving birth. He fixed the air-conditioning there last week ? a good thing, too, as Monday was scheduled to be the hottest day of the year in London.

"If the air-con stops working, I'll probably be the one to go in," he said.

The outpouring of affection for the royal infant is a sign of how thoroughly Britain's royal family has rebuilt its image in the eyes of its subjects since the low point that followed the death of Princess Diana in a car crash in 1997. Diana had been popular, glamorous and ? in the eyes of many ? badly treated by the royal "Firm."

Sixteen years on, support for the monarchy is riding high after William and Kate's 2011 wedding and last year's Diamond Jubilee celebrations for Queen Elizabeth II's 60 years on the throne.

For non-Britons, the emergence of an attractive young generation that includes William, Kate and soldier-socialite Prince Harry has given the clan a mix of glamour and celebrity that is hard to resist.

"We like to pretend we have a king and queen," said 17-year-old Maddie Cruse, from Helena, Montana, as she stood outside Buckingham Palace. "Since we don't have a king and queen, we borrow yours."

Like many visitors, Cruse was well versed about recent changes to royal rules that mean a daughter will not lose her place in the royal succession if William and Kate later have a son. Boy or girl, the baby will be third in line to the throne behind Prince Charles and Prince William and is likely to be monarch one day ? a fact that is lending an extra sense of history to the birth.

"I hope it's a girl, because it's the first royal that could assume the throne as a girl," Cruse said. "And she'll be a princess, and we'll get to see all the cute little clothes."

Britain?s Top Military Brass: The UK Must be Prepared ?To Go to War?. ?We Must Risk War with Syria?

By Global Research News
July 19, 2013

?Britain has to be prepared to ?go to war? is the message of the outgoing British Chief of Staff General Sir David Richards.

In an interview in the Daily Telegraph, Richards criticized the British government for its ineptitude. According the General Richard, if the British government wishes to restrain the Syrian regime, it must continue arming the Al Qaeda rebels as well as implement no-fly zones. ?The (former) Chief of the Defence Staff also warns that the Government needs to clarify its ?political objective? in Syria before a coherent military plan for dealing with the Assad regime can be recommended.?

General Sir David Richards, however, emphasized that a ?no fly zone? is not enough, and what is required is an all out ground war, implying the illegal land invasion of a sovereign country.

?You have to establish a ground control zone. You have to take out their air defences. You also have to make sure they can?t manoeuvre ? which means you have to take out their tanks, and their armoured personnel carriers and all the other things that are actually doing the damage.

The chief of the defence staff also warns that simply introducing a no-fly zone on its own would not prove effective and that other military measures would be required. (Con Coughlin and Robert Winnett, Daily Telegraph, 18 July 2013. Read Complete Daily Telegraph article: Army chief: We risk war with Syria)

In his interview with The Daily Telegraph, General Sir David Richards said that ?if you want to have the material impact on the Syrian regime?s calculations that some people seek? then ?ground targets? would have to be ?hit?. ?

Bin Laden son-in-law says he was victim of U.S. 'rendition'

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A former spokesman for al Qaeda says he was the subject of an extrajudicial transfer to U.S. custody via three Middle Eastern countries this year, an allegation that suggests President Barack Obama's administration is still carrying out controversial "rendition" operations.

Suleiman Abu Ghaith, a close associate and son-in-law of Osama bin Laden, was victim of "an absolute rendition ... an extrajudicial rendition," said Stanley Cohen, a New York lawyer who is representing Abu Ghaith.

The Kuwaiti cleric has pleaded not guilty in Federal Court in Manhattan to charges of conspiring to kill Americans.

The use of "rendition" was a counterterrorism tactic begun under President George W. Bush when suspected al Qaeda figures were grabbed by CIA teams around the world and transferred without judicial process to third countries or to secret prisons that the U.S. spy agency maintained overseas.

When he came to office in 2009, Obama renounced so-called enhanced interrogation techniques, which human rights advocates and some U.S. politicians have described as torture. But his administration said it would not completely ban the use of rendition.

In the first trial of its kind against "rendition" flights, an Italian judge in 2009 sentenced 23 Americans in absentia for the abduction of an Egyptian Muslim cleric who was snatched in Milan in 2003 and sent to Egypt. Former CIA Milan station chief Robert Seldon Lady, given a nine-year prison sentence, was detained in Panama this week, and the State Department said on Friday he was headed to the United States.

Abu Ghaith, who was a spokesman for al Qaeda around September 2001, is one of the highest-ranking al Qaeda figures to face U.S. criminal charges for crimes related to the September 11 attacks. He has pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiring to kill Americans, and faces a January 2014 trial.

In a court affidavit filed on Friday, Abu Ghaith confirms that after the attacks he fled to Iran, where he was arrested in mid-2002.

He claims he was held without charge in different prisons in Iran until January 2013. Iranian authorities periodically interrogated him, he says, and they also advised him that the U.S. government was aware he was in their custody.

Abu Ghaith says that on January 11, the Iranian government informed him he was being released and allowed him to enter Turkey, where he believed he would be allowed to return to his native Kuwait.

However, within 12 hours, Turkish authorities arrested him, he says. After about 45 days of interrogation by Turkish authorities in Ankara, Abu Ghaith says, he was put on a plane and told that he would be flown to Kuwait.

Instead of flying to Kuwait, Abu Ghaith says, his plane landed in Amman where he was handcuffed and hooded by Jordanian police and handed over to a group of people who he believed included Americans.

Later, this group re-shackled Abu Ghaith and replaced his hood with blacked-out goggles, earplugs and noise-proof headphones, he says. Then he was put on a plane, and once airborne he was introduced to a man who identified himself as being from the FBI. Upon landing in New York, he was taken to Manhattan and imprisoned to await trial.

U.S. authorities have said that over the years, they were aware of the presence in Iran of Abu Ghaith and other al Qaeda figures, including a top aide to bin Laden and one of the al Qaeda leader's sons.

Did Redskins star Robert Griffin III send racy texts ON HIS WEDDING DAY to someone who was not his bride? A Hooters waitress says she has photo proof

Robert Griffin III? of the Washington Redskins send an incriminating texton his wedding day?

Did newlywed Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III send an incriminating text on the day of his wedding?

Hooters waitress and a Virginia Commonwealth University student Meredith Barber has offered up photo proof to bustedcoverage.com that Griffin allegedly sent her a series of racy messages, including some on the day he said "I do."

"Come on bae," the QB reportedly wrote to Barber before sending a shirtless image of himself with his head cut off, along with a smiley icon.

PHOTOS: CELEBRITY CHEATING SCANDALS

When Barber didn't respond to his advances, he allegedly wrote, "Well ok I give up I guess. See you in a few weeks kid."

The texts were dated in the screen shot for July 6 in the early hours of RG III's wedding day to longtime girlfriend Rebecca Liddicoat.

A Twitter trail was detected by someone named Brandon K., who emailed Busted Coverage with the tip-off.

Griffin's groomsman William Mallow's Twitter timeline allegedly showed activity with Barber on it, leading the source to dig back to Barber's feed, where a tweet from the blond said,?"I could show Becky this though." Posted along with the statement was the screen shot from her cellphone of the alleged wedding day messages.?

Mallow reportedly wrote into the site, denying the reports.

"We both know that Meredith is looking for attention/money. I know this is what you do for a living and you thought that this would be a golden opportunity but the fact of the matter is that this is completely false," he wrote.

"I was with Robert the night in question, and there was zero texting of other girls, much less selfie stomach shots. That isn't even close to what the bathroom of the suite we were in looked like," reads the missive, which includes screenshots of a text exchange Mallow had with Barber in which she claims someone took her phone and wrote the emails."

Barber directly contacted Busted Coverage when its story went live, asking that it be taken down. But she said that, in exchange, she would sell "inappropriate pictures," more screenshots of chats and texts between her and Griffin.

Someone also claiming to be Barber's ex-boyfriend reached out to Deadspin.com to sell "information, text messages, FaceTime screenshots, pictures, you name it, proving that it was indeed him and he's been up to it for some time," the site reported.

Neither Deadspin or Busted Coverage has purchased any of the supposed proof. Griffin was reportedly on his honeymoon in Europe when the news broke.

Japan upper house election this weekend ? what to watch for

  • The governing LDP/new Komeito are on track to win an upper house majority
  • There are 121 seats up for grabs
  • The government currently holds 59 of them
  • They need 63 to get a majority
  • If the LDP win 72 seats they will get an upper house majority in their own right (and not need their coalition partner there)
  • The more seats the LDP win at this election, the greater the mandate Abe will have within his own party to proceed with difficult reforms. All the polls virtually assure he will win a majority so he wont have to worry about opposition parties obstructing him in his reform efforts, what he does have to worry about are powerful interests within his own party obstructing reforms. hence, the bigger the majority the more his power will be within his own party. Winning 72 seats, though, does not appear to be the most likely outcome. most polls have the LDP winning 65-68, not 72.
