Memphis Filmmakers Launch Kickstarter Campaign for Next Project ...

Memphis production company Evelyn Avenue has announced the production of Only Child, the second feature length film in filmmaker Brian Pera?s ongoing Woman?s Picture series.

Starring?Amy LaVere, Grace Zabriskie (Big Love, Twin Peaks), and Lindsey Roberts (The Poor?and Hungry, Hustle & Flow), Only?Child is?a mother/daughter film noir in the tradition of films like Mildred Pierce and Now, Voyager.?The new film?tells the story of a mother (Zabriskie) searching for her missing daughter (LaVere). As her search draws her closer, the troubled past these women share comes into sharper focus, revealing a disturbing bond.

The film begins principal photography in April, with support from the Creative Capital Foundation. Filmmaker Brian Pera was awarded a grant for film/video arts by Creative Capital in January of 2012 for his work in the Woman?s Picture series.

Woman?s Picture is a series of interrelated stories inspired by the women?s films of the 30s, 40s, and 50s. The first feature length film in the series, which screened last year at the Indie Memphis film festival, was listed by the Commercial Appeal?s John Beifuss as one of the top 20 films of the year. The film featured Ann Magnuson, Calpernia Addams, and LaVere in central roles.

As a fundraising effort to secure the remainder of the film?s budget, Evelyn Avenue has initiated a kickstarter campaign. Kickstarter is a? unique all-or-nothing funding method?in which?projects must be fully-funded or no money changes hands. Traditionally, these campaigns have included incentives for donors which include items such as DVDs, production-related mementos, and screen credits.

The kickstarter campaign for Only Child is unique in offering several items that will engage the Memphis community in the making of the film.

  • A downloadable music sampler of songs by over 20 Memphis musicians
  • Download of the first Woman?s Picture feature length film
  • A walk-on role in the film
  • Chair time at Memphis? Underground Art tattoo studio
  • Signed and personally inscribed copies of the book It Came From Memphis, by producer, author, and filmmaker Robert Gordon
  • An original Work on Paper by Memphis artist, Melissa Dunn
  • A DVD of filmmaker Jim Jarmusch?s Memphis-based film Mystery Train signed by the director and donated specifically for the kickstarter campaign
  • From Memphis native Ira Sachs, a signed copy of the script for his latest film, Keep the Lights On, which recently premiered at Sundance and won the Teddy Award at the Berlin International film festival.

In addition, for our audience of perfume-lovers, there are several exclusive, limited edition perfumes and soaps created by Zurich perfumer Andy Tauer for the occasion.

The Kickstarter campaign for?Only Child concludes on March 29 with a live video podcast interview with Grace Zabriskie and Amy LaVere, sponsored by Black Lodge Video in the Cooper Young District, which?begins at 6:00 p.m.

To celebrate the making of?Only Child?and support its fundraising efforts, Black Lodge Video will be hosting weekly screenings of films starring Grace Zabriskie, who appeared as a central figure in the series Twin Peaks. ?Black Lodge takes its name from the Twin Peaks series and devotes itself to featuring the work of David Lynch and other independent and cult directors.
