There are so many paint options today. Which is great, because it means that you can always find exactly what you are looking for. If you go to a paint store like Sherwin Williams, or a home improvement store like Home Depot, you can find pretty much any color you could imagine. And if you are trying to match a specific item, like your baby?s blanket or favorite stuffed animal, then you can even bring that item in and have them color-match it for you.
But what about all the finishes? From matte to high-gloss, there are several different finishes to choose from. Finding the right finish for you can be just as important as finding the right color. Each finish provides a completely different style and image. I?ve even seen people mix two different paint finishes in stripes or patterns to create a complex, visually appealing design. Some of these paints even work better in different types of rooms than others, so it is important to know what your options are.
Here is a guide to help you understand what the different paint options are.
Primer ? For almost any painting project you are going to do, you will need to start with a primer. Paint primer has several purposes. It acts as a ?glue? between your wall and your paint. This helps your paint to stay on longer. It also provides a basic, neutral color for you to paint over. If you are painting with a light color, and you were to paint that over a dark color, then the dark color would alter the color of the finished product. But, if you start with a primer, then you get to start with a blank canvas, and end up with the exact color that you wanted. Some brands of paint nowadays come with a primer already built in, so if you don?t want to put the extra work in of painting a primer on first you can look for one of these brands.
Flat ? Flat paint has zero sheen to it. It is very good at hiding imperfections in walls (bumps, indentations, etc). Because it has no sheen to it, it is not easy to clean, so keep that in mind for high-traffic areas.
Matte ? Matte paint, also called velvet paint, has very little sheen to it. A matte finish is a bit more trendy, less traditional, than paint finishes with more sheen to them. It also isn?t always quite as durable as the other options with more sheen (but easier to clean than flat paint), so keep that in mind.
Satin ? Satin paint has a little bit of sheen to it, but not as much as a High-Gloss paint. This is the most popular finish for everyday walls in homes. If you can?t decide whether you want to go with the look of the matte, or the cleaning abilities of the High-Gloss, then Satin is a great choice, especially for high-traffic areas.
Semi-Gloss ? Moving up the scale in sheen, or gloss, Semi-Gloss has more sheen than Satin, but not as much as High-Gloss. Great option for cupboards and trim.
High-Gloss ? High Gloss paint has the highest amount of sheen to it. Because of its high level of sheen, High-Gloss is the easiest to clean. It is also the best at repelling water, so this is the most common option used in household bathrooms and kitchens.
