Hostreview.com Getting Your Small Business Online

Getting Your Small Business Online

A survey a while back by a company named Ad-ology discovered that fully 46 percent of small businesses did not yet have a website. The real question is: Why not? What is it about having a website that is advantageous to a small business? And how does one go about creating a web presence for either a new or existing business? We talked to some experts and have the answers for you.

The steps to creating a business website are straightforward.

Obtain a compelling domain name - Any domain registrar or web hosting provider will have a domain search function. You can easily search for a domain name at www.godaddy.com or search here for UK domain names. This will suffice if your name is unusual and not yet taken. If you need help with domain names suggestions you might try this domain suggestion tool: www.nametumbler.com. Alternatively if you'd like to see the aftermarket for domain names you can see a list of previously registered domains for sale at: http://sedo.com.

Select a web hosting company to house your website - In order to make your website available 24 hours each day, 365 days a year you will need to pay a web hosting company to place it in one of their data centers on a robust computer with an ''always on'' Internet connection. There are a wide variety of web hosting companies and plans to choose from and of course you can find some great ones by looking through HostReview's Recommended Hosts. Daniel Foster, co-founder of website hosting provider 34SP.com suggests looking for these traits in a web hosting company, ''Recommendations form other happy customers are always good. Check out the company's reputation on Google - and don't forget Twitter. You can learn how happy current customers are by typing the company name into Twitter and reading the comments.''

Get the website itself created either through a web designer or via an easy to use content management system like WordPress - Hiring a web designer will give you a professional and unique business website. However, WordPress has so many templates and themes available for free that you can have a very interesting, productive and useful site without paying for a designer.

So what does a business website really do for you? Here are the thoughts of small business owner Neil Heuer. Mr. Heuer is owner of Grand Woodworking in Naples, Florida. His company provides the highest quality custom made woodwork for new and existing homes. Here is what Mr. Heuer said when asked about his newly created website, ''I wanted an online presence that reflected the quality of the work we do and that conveyed our professionalism. When we have people representing us it is important to look professional and act professional. Our website is no different. It is a representative of our business. We want to knock the socks off of everyone who sees our work. It might seem expensive to create a website but it is a sales person within your business. Think about your product, think about your customers and what they are looking for. Make your website easy to use and not overly complex. Make it simple for customers to find what they want and not overwhelming. Think about your website as a business card but with endless possibilities.''
