HeistProof: Small Company, Big Technology Innovation | Bradenton ...

Nick Ramirez, Reed Mapes, and Charles Bader are the three-man team behind HeistProof.

HeistProof, a three-man company based out of an unassuming office on Manatee Avenue, is making big waves in the tech world?particularly in the automotive security and navigation sector?and standing shoulder-to-shoulder with industry titans like Nissan and OnStar. ?

Formed in 2009, HeistProof borrows from the technology created by its parent company, Bulletproof Electronics, whose keyless motorcycle ignition system revolutionized the industry in 2006.

Reed Mapes, the founder and president of Ironworks Motorcycle Co., and Nick Ramirez, a technology and engineering guru from Intel, began Bulletproof Electronics in 2004. Brought together by a shared love for motorcycles and technology, Mapes and Ramirez developed ARSE (Automated Recognition System Electronics), a keyless electronic module that uses a microchip embedded in a credit card-sized device to operate a motorcycle.

When ARSE won the V-Twin Expo Motorcycle Accessory of the Year award in 2006 as well as six medals and the Grand Prix overall prize for the best invention at the annual Innovation and New Product Exposition? in 2007, Mapes and Ramirez realized it was time to go big.

Thus, Heistproof was born as a way to transition the same technology into use in automobiles, recreation vehicles, marine vehicles and home security.

?We basically re-invented the key,? said Charles Bader, a childhood friend of Ramirez who joined HeistProof as its president and chief of sales and marketing.

?Until our technology came around in 2004, the key had not changed very much, aside from its size and cost, since the 13th century when the first skeleton key was invented," Bader said. "This is the key for the 21st century.?

More than $1 billion worth of commercial equipment is stolen in the United States each year, Bader said and he is determined that HeistProof will remedy the epidemic.

The credit card-sized HeistProof device contains a microchip that communicates with a computer installed inside the vehicle when its owner or an authorized operator is within inches of the vehicle. HeistProof takes the concept of keyless vehicle operation developed by ARSE a step further by working as an anti-theft device that shuts down the system to everyone except those authorized to use the vehicle.

?Ultimately, this key can be everything you need,? said Bader, suggesting the possibilities of a not-so-distant future.

?It can open and operate your car, your motorcycle or your boat. It can unlock your house or even your hotel room," he said. "In the future, we imagine that you could go online and make a hotel reservation, and when you arrive at the hotel the door will already be programmed to recognize the key card you already have.?

Another HeistProof invention, Knowledge is Money (KIM), places the quality and convenience of modern technology right at its users fingertips ? literally.

?You know the saying that?s so popular these days, ?There?s an app for that?? That?s how we view KIM,? said Bader. ?Our cars are not only secure, but they?re also smart.?

KIM uses real-time GPS to provide fleet management capabilities that not only locate equipment, but shows who is operating the equipment and where it has been, and even identifies the speed at which the vehicle is traveling.

?KIM can contact you or any designated person about mileage and routine car maintenance, and she can even tell you what needs to be replaced, what part number to order, what it will cost and who you can order it from ? all of that, right at your fingertips,? said Bader.

?It?s programmable to tell you literally anything. KIM has the capacity to organize and maintain anything in your life, right down to the filter in your refrigerator at home or the batteries in your smoke alarm.?

By combining the technology of the HeistProof anti-theft device with KIM, Heistproof developed the Keyless Information Security System (KISS), particularly useful for fleet management in industries such as car and equipment rental, taxis and public busses and even law enforcement.

KISS utilizes the GPS, internet and software capabilities of KIM in conjunction with the anti-theft technology of ARSE and HeistProof to provide a company with info about where the vehicle is located and what authorized operator is using it, as well as providing routine maintenance alerts and even handling electronic billing for rental services by directly charging the customer?s credit card.

?In addition to making vehicles more secure and providing owners with knowledge about them, this technology also encourages green business by eliminating paper and keeping all records electronic,? Bader said.

In April, HeistProof was invited to New York as a finalist for the prestigious Edison Award. The three-man operation stood amongst such industry giants as Nissan and OnStar, ultimately winning the bronze medal for Security in the Automotive Industry?an accomplishment virtually unheard of from such a snall company.

In three short years, HeistProof has made tremendous advances in the automotive security industry, but what is perhaps most inspiring is the recognition the company has received from the technology sector. The rapidly-growing collection of prestigious awards earned by HeistProof is an inspirational reminder for all business owners and innovators: Size doesn't matter if the idea is big enough.

Even a three-man operation based out of a small coastal town can successfully reinvent the wheel ? or at least the key ? and revolutionize the landscape of modern technology in the process.
