The latest movie script to be purchased by Warner Bros. wasn't brainstormed in some studio. No, instead it got its start when a user on popular link-sharing website?Reddit?posed a hypothetical question.?
"Could I destroy the entire Roman Empire during the reign of Augustus if I traveled back in time with a modern U.S. Marine infantry battalion or MEU?" he wondered.
The peculiar question caught the attention of James Erwin, an author and two-time "Jeopardy!" champion, and so he replied with a comment detailing what might happen in the situation described.
And with the encouragement of other Reddit users, his one comment ? a clever piece of flash fiction???turned into another. And another. And another. Eventually Erwin moved his writings to a sub-Reddit?? a user-created subsection on the website?? called RomeSweetRome.
There he continued weaving his tale until one day it caught the eye of?Madhouse Entertainment's Adam Kolbrenner. According to Variety, Kolbrenner reached out to Erwin and worked with him to develop the concept:
When it came time to find a home for the project, Kolbrenner brought it to WB's Chris Gary, a young exec who encouraged the studio to move aggressively to acquire it.
Kolbrenner will produce with Gianni Nunnari ("Immortals") of Hollywood Gang, where John Ridley will oversee the project for the company. Madhouse's Robyn Meisinger will exec produce and Gary will shepherd the project for Warners.
